ENGELBRECHT, Martin. 1684-1756
1725. Gray boards, manuscript title on the front cover. The ornamental title displays glasses, goblets, flasks, cups, tankards and bottles. Its fourteen lines of verse summarize the suite's images in order. The prints show richly dressed subjects consuming their chosen drink in the intimacy of the bedroom (mother's milk), at the public trough (water), in the abbey (beer), sheltered by the pleasure house (wine) and so on. The outer frames further the allegories by including games of chance (tobacco), fine porcelain (coffee and tea), a buxom server (chocolate), etc. Six lines of engraved verse below each image elaborate its moral and social context. This lively print suite shows the stages of man from the suckling infant, eager at his mother's breast, to the ailing burgher, sourly sipping his beaker of medicine. We see an idle youth lost in pipe dreams as he smokes, an amorous couple sharing a demitasse of mead and plate of sweets and an old woman reviving her spirits in a tavern with a glass of brandy.  Apparently only one other integral set survives (Berlin). Those at Göttweig Abbey (Austria) and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nürnberg) are defective. Yale has only the title-page. The Arents Collection copy, cut down and mounted, is a later issue with the base of the plates trimmed off and the verses in letterpress.  In fine condition (four short lower marginal tears neatly repaired). ¶Schott, Der Augsburger Kupferstecher und Kunstverleger Martin Engelbrecht 3179-87 (title & plates 2-9 only, described after a defective copy in the trade); Arents & Brook … [Click Below for Full Description]

In the Leydse courant of 2 May 1725, we can find and advertisement of the sale of the blacksmith's workshop, so the actual murder must have happened before that date.Johan van den Bergh (1664-1755), from 1725 to 1755 bailiff of Rhineland and several years burgomaster of Leiden, was the man who in 1741 bestowed the Leiden University library with the famous Psautier de Saint Louis. In very good condition, spine of the wrappers tattered.l For Van den Bergh: NNBW IV, cols. 116-117.

Homer
1725. The Odyssey of Homer, translated by Alexander Pope, Printed for Bernard Lintot, London, 1725, five volumes, full leather, illustrated frontispieces and first edition, 4to. In fair condition. Unevenly bound. Volume 4 spine's discolored. Volume one front board is detached. All books are rebacked. Beautiful spine detail with red morocco labels and gilt work. Calf boards are in nice condition overall. Text block is clean with minimal foxing or flaws. A solid, nice set. Please see photos. Alexander Pope's monumental translation of Homer's Odyssey, first edition. Uniformly bounds in contemporary calf, gilt tooling to the spine with red morocco labels. For the Odyssey, Pope was assisted by Elijah Fenton and William Broome. Pope began translating Homer in 1713. The arduous undertaking would prove to be the most laborious literary enterprise of his life, but one to which he was well-suited. "Idolatry of classical models was an essential pal part of religion of men of letters of the day, but Homer in modern English was still wanting. Popes rising fame and his familiarity with the literary and social leaders made him the man for the opportunity. The Homer was long regarded as a masterpiece, and for a century was the source from, which clever schoolboys like Byron learnt Homer was not a mere instrument of torture invented by their masters. No translation of profane literature has ever occupied such a position." RARES1725BYZB. [Attributes: First Edition]

SHAKESPEARE, William.
[Hamlet:] Dublin: by George Grierson, 1725. Together 6 works bound in one volume, variously duodecimo in half-sheets or small octavo (155 x 95 mm). Contemporary calf, lacking spine, boards detached. Housed in a red cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. All except the Fielding Miser are defective to some degree, as detailed below; the volume as a whole in poor condition, interesting none the less for showing the contemporary appetite in Dublin for play-texts from London stage productions. Second Dublin edition of Hamlet, following the first of 1721, which is notable for being the first printing of Shakespeare outside his native country, together with the first Dublin editions of Macbeth (1723) and Henry VIII (1734). Having moved from Scotland to Dublin some years earlier, George Grierson (c. 1680-1753) set up his own printing house in 1720. The Irish Parliament had not adopted as law in Ireland the provisions of the British Copyright Act of 1709, and Dublin booksellers could legally reprint any new publication first published in London without having to pay for copy. Grierson was later the king's printer in Ireland, so hardly a disreputable book pirate. Both Hamlet (1721) and Macbeth (1723) show that Grierson was active in publishing Shakespeare in Dublin before Pope's edition of 1725, though Grierson was quick to use Pope's text as the basis for his collected edition of 1726, the first of Shakespeare published in Ireland. FESTIVALS & FUNERALS. COSIMO III de' MEDICI, GRAND DUKE OF TUSCANY (d. 1723); Del Riccio, Leonardo
Florence:, 1725. SOLE EDITION.. Quarto:. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, edges of text-block sprinkled red. A very fine copy, printed on thick paper. The large, folding plate of the catafalque (51 x 35 cm.) is also in fine condition. An account of the funeral ceremonies for Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (d. 30 Oct. 1723). To the façade of the church, draped with black damask, were affixed three large, inscribed plaques, the first of them, celebrating the deeds of Cosimo, featured the arms of the Medici, an allegorical figure of fame, and military trophies. In the four grand niches of the façade were skeletons (“simulacra of death”). Within, the interior was hung with black draperies adorned with woven skulls, the Medici palle, and lilies; the arches were tented, the fabric fringed with white. Paintings were hung along the nave illustrating Cosimo’s achievements. These were set within trompe l’oeil that appeared to the viewer to be made of precious metals encrusted with gems. Del Riccio describes and interprets each of these paintings, and i … [Click Below for Full Description]
