         Graecia Antiquae Tabula Nova

Artist: L Isle de /Covens & Mortier Guillaume (d) ; issued in: Paris; date: (d)1725 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 48 x 63; - description: Map with the Peleponnese, Attica, Crete and the surrounding islands; - vita of the artist: Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Voyage des Enfans d'Israel Dans le Desert Dequis leur sortie D' Egypte Par la Mer Rouge .

Artist: Mortier Peter ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1725 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 40 x 47; - description: Map depicts the wanderings of Moses with the Children of Israel through Egypt. The map shows the route from Rahmeses to Pi Hachiroth at the Red Sea.Pharoahs soldiers are swallowed up by the Sea when the Isreals are crossing is. ; - vita of the artist: Pieter Mortier (1661?1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atlases until about 1866.

The Proceedings of the King's Commission of the Peace, and Oyer and Terminer, and Jail-Delivery of Newgate, Held for the City of London, and County of Middlesex, at Justice-Hall in the Old-Bailey, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Being the 13th, 14th, and 15th Days of May, in the Eleventh Year of His Majesty's Reign

Printed by Geo. James ? and sold by Tho. Warner, [London 1725 - 8 pp., double columns. Folio. The Old Bailey sessions papers containing the earliest known account of the trial and sentencing of "the greatest criminal mastermind of the eighteenth century" (ODNB), the notorious thief-taker and receiver Jonathan Wild. His life, trial and execution were fodder for numerous pamphleteers and satirists, including John Gay (Peachum in The Beggar's Opera, 1728) and Henry Fielding (Jonathan Wild the Great, 1743)Wild (1683-1725) was boss of a criminal enterprise that benefited both from the stealing of goods and the rewards paid for their return. Wild carried himself like a gentleman and enjoyed semi-official status as "Thief-catcher General of Great Britain." He advertised his services in locating and returning stolen property and was seen by many as performing a useful public service, though he was often returning goods that he himself had ordered stolen. He frequently turned on his sources, his testimony convicting an estimated 120 criminals. His double-dealing eventually caused public favor to turn against him, and he was arrested after accepting 10 guineas for returning a box of stolen lace (a theft he had ordered) without attempting to prosecute the criminals. The Old Bailey sessions papers contain an abbreviated record of Wild's 4-hour trial on 15 May 1725. His indictment on two counts reads: "Jonathan Wilde, of S. Andrew's Hollorn, was indicted for privately stealing, in the Shop of Katharine Stetham, 50 Yards of Lace, value 40 l., the Goods of Katharine Stetham, on the 22nd of January last" and secondly, "did not then, nor any time since, discover or apprehend, or cause to be apprehended and brought to Justice, the Persons that committed the said Felony." Wild is here being indicted under the 1718 Transportation Act, which made it a felony to accept a reward for stolen goods without reporting the thieves. The Act, commonly known as the Jonathan Wild Act, was passed specifically to target Wild. The testimony of Henry Kelly, who, with a Mrs. Marcus, committed the robbery, recounts Wild's words in suggesting the crime: "'There's an old Blind Bitch that sells fine Flanders lace just by Holborn-Bridge; her Daughter is as blind as herself; and if you call there, you may speak with a Box of Lace (that is, steal a Box).'" The theft is described in detail - Kelly feigns a lack of interest in Mrs. Stetham's wares, who then leaves the burglars alone in the shop while she goes upstairs to search for more lace. "And as People of our Professions are seldom guilty of losing an Opportunity, I made use of this. I took a Tin Box of Lace, gave it to Mrs. Murphy, and she hid it under her Cloak." Wild offers Kelly a choice, "ready Money, or stay till an Advertisement came out." Kelly chooses the ready money and receives three guineas and four broad pieces from Wild with the comment "'I can't afford to give you any more ? for tho' I have got some Influence over her, by helping her to Goods two or three times before, yet I know her to be a stingy hard-mouth'd old Bitch, and I shan't get above Ten Guineas out of her.'" We later learn through Mrs. Stetham's testimony that she advertised a reward of 15 guineas, and in conversation with Wild she admitted she would offer as much as 25 guineas. The very night of the theft, Mrs. Stetham seeks out Wild, who does eventually recover her box of lace (minus one missing piece) for a negotiated sum of 10 guineas. Mrs. Stetham's conversation with Wild, as related in her testimony, is revealing of his thoroughly duplicitous nature: "'Now, Mr. Wilde, (says I) what must you have for your Trouble? Not a Farthing, says he, not a Farthing for me. I don't do these things for Worldly Interest, but only for the Good of poor People that have met with Misfortunes ? and I don't know but that I may help you not only to your Money again, but to the Thief too ? And as you're a good Woman and a Widow, and a Christian, I desire nothing of you but your Prayers, and for them I shall be thankful.'"T

         Receuil des Voyages

1725 - qui on servi a l'etablissement et aux progrez de la Compagnie des Indie Orientales, formée dans les Provinces Unies des Païs-Bas. [With] Voyage de Gautier Schouten aux Inides Orientales, Commencé l'an 1658. & fini l'an 1665.10 vols. 55 maps & plans mostly folding with 6 of (10?) frontispieces (Renneville) & 2 frontispieces & 9 plates (Schouten). 12mo. Lovely unsophisticated contemporary calf, vols 3-10 of Renneville uniform with Schouten (stamped as vols. XI & XII), vols. I & II of Renneville with slightly different tooling. Rouen, Renneville translated Commelin's great Dutch work, first published in 1645, which contains all the major Dutch voyages to the East Indies from 1594 to the 1630s. The French edition is greatly superior to the English version which only included material from the first volume of the original. The section on the voyage to Japan by the Dutch captain Hendrick Hagenaer is particularly interesting as is the Description of Japan by François Caron. The voyage of Wouter Schouten, also printed in 1725 by the same publishers, continues the story of the Dutch in the East Indies into the 1660s and forms an obvious continuation of the Receuil. Landwehr, 254 (calling for a frontis to each volume but only 22 plates) & 288.
