MANDEVILLE Bernard]
London, Brotherton, 1723. - - - Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, 1st Prince of Benevento, then 1st Prince of Talleyrand, was a laicized French bishop, politician, and diplomat. After theology studies, he became in 1780 Agent-General of the Clergy and represented the Catholic Church to the French Crown. He worked at the highest levels of successive French governments, most commonly as foreign minister or in some other diplomatic capacity. His career spanned the regimes of Louis XVI, the years of the French Revolution, Napoleon, Louis XVIII, and Louis-Philippe. Those he served often distrusted Talleyrand but, like Napoleon, found him extremely useful. The name "Talleyrand" has become a byword for crafty, cynical diplomacy. He was Napoleon's chief diplomat during the years when French military victories brought one European state after another under French hegemony, as, he believed, they rightfully should be.[citation needed] However, most of the time, Talleyrand worked for peace so as to consolidate France's gains. He succeeded in obtaining peace with Austria through th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Garcia de la Concepcion, Joseph
Juan de la Puerta, Sevilla, 1723. Folio, 29 x 20.5cm, pp [37],216,203,173,39,[30 - an index of "cosas notables"], with full-page plate showing the Nativity scene. History of the foundation of the Bethlemite order in Guatemala by Brother Peter of Saint Joseph Betancur, i.e. Santo Hermano Pedro (1626- 1667), together with a biography of the saint. Betancur, born in the Canary Islands, came to Guatemala as a young man, aspiring to become a priest. Unable to master the Latin, he withdrew from the Jesuit school, became a Franciscan tertiary, and founded a hospital in Antigua, Guatemala. This was followed by a school, a hospice for poor travellers -- priest and students esp. -- and finally the founding of a new order, la Orden de los Bethlemitas y de las Bethlemitas, recognized by the Holy See -- the first new religious order in the Americas. His hospital work was innovative, as it was specially intended for convalescents. He is credited with introducing the Nativity scene ("Belen") into Christmas festivities into the continent, and the posada processions, that quickly took root throughout Latin America, esp. Mexico and Peru. This work is divided into four parts, containing a life of Hermano Pedro, a life of Fray Rodrigo de la Cruz, the second superior general, a history of the order in Latin America, and a brief section on the lives of other important persons in the order. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gichtel, Johann Georg u. Johann Georg Graber
Johann Georg Graber, 1723. 8°. 10, 175 pg. Extremely rare first edition of Gichtel¿s mystical anthropology, with five magnificent handcolored plates (one double page) in a splendid leather binding. The coloured plates are spectacular. This famous book is usually found in black and white and missing one or two plates. Some of these plates are reproduced in Zadrobilek¿s Opus Magnum, pg. 205 & 206, and one full size on pg. 184. However the plates in Zadrobilek, rather washed out, are from the second edition of the work. The Introduction states:¿These are the images of the inner man, that our author has kept secret for fifteen years, until the end of his life; and we, for ten years, since his death.¿ The first two plates depicts the Perfect Man, reintegrated and illuminated according to the Three Principles of the Divine Essence. The fourth plate depicts the Natural, earthly Man, darkened, which abides in the World of Stars and Elements. The fifthe plates shows the Man reborn in Christ. The engravings are fabulous in their execution. The photos cannot reporduce in their accuracy the splendid washes used on the copperplates. Condition: very good, some minimal soiling, a tear that was in the fourth plate has been profesionally restored on the back. However, it was not touching the manikin, only the outer space of the figure. Overall, a splendid copy, very hard to find with all engravings, especially handcoloured. This work, printed to celebrate the wedding in 1722 in Munich of Karl Albrecht, Electoral Prince Electoral Prince of Bavaria (1697-1745) and Holy Roman Emperor (1742-45) and Maria Amalia, Imperial Princess (1701-1756), was created at the height of the Bavarian Rococo era. While the actual wedding took place in Vienna on 5 October, the ensuing celebrations in Munich lasted from 17 October to 4 November. The 20 double-page plates, by Carl Remshart and Johann August Corvinus after Matthias Diesel with French and German captions, provide excellent documentation of the various splendid Electoral homes of Karl Albrecht and, especially, his gardens. The garden at Schleissheim (depicted in three double-page plates) was one of the most important baroque gardens of Europe. Eleven of the double-page plates depict the buildings but especially the varied gardens at Nymphenburg which, under Karl Albrecht's influence, the new English landscape style came into its own. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
