Bede; John Smith
ont> J Batley : London, 1723 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of John Smith's translation of Bede's historical work on the English people. Written in English from Bede's original Latin. The 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People' was written by the Venerable Bede in about AD731. It regards the history of Christian Churches in England, as well as a general. The work mostly focuses on the conflict between the pre-Schism Roman Rite and Celtic Christianity. It regards the history of England from the time of Julius Caesar to the date of the work's completion. John Smith, the translator of this work was an English cleric who is best known for this translation. The work was posthumously published in 1723. This edition has the life of Venerable Bede and extensive notes by Captain John Stevens. ESTC No. T111716. Oviedo y Banos, Joseph de
First edition of this history of Venezuela, covering the period to 1597, is considered one of the most important early works on the subject. The author used documents, since lost, in the archives of Caracas in an attempt to preserve their information; a second part was never published (see comments in Leclerc, Palau, and Sabin). The author, military officer and historian who retired from the army in 1730 with the rank of lieutenant general, was born in Bogotá, 1671, and died at Caracas, 1738, having spent the greater part of his life in Venezuela. Educated in Lima, he was from a family linked to the Spanish bureaucracy in America. The book is dedicated to the author's brother, Diego Antonio de Oviedo y baños, Oidor of the Royal Audiencias of Santo Domingo, Guatemala, and mexico, a member of the Consejo Real y Supremo de las Indias. An "Aprobacion" by manuel Isidoro mirones y benavente, a member of the Consejo Real and Oidor de la Real Audiencia de panamá occupies the third preliminary leaf verso to the first half of the fifth preliminary leaf recto. The final three preliminary leaves consist of verses by Alonso de Escobar, Rui Fernández de Fuenmayor, José de Fuentes , and Francisco de Hoces, followed by a "prologo al lector". Kidder, Edward
[London: n.d., c. 1723 or after]. Later issue. [52] leaves, entirely engraved throughout, including frontispiece portrait of the author in wig (presumed 2nd state) by Robert Sheppard, and 8 engraved plates (three folding) of patterns and ornamental designs for pies and pastries. Without ad leaf found in some copies. 8vo. Kidder (1666-1737) ran a popular pastry school, his obituary in the London Magazine claiming that he "taught near 6000 Ladies the Art of Pastry." His school had several different locations in the 1720s and '30s, the different addresses resulting in title-page variants. All editions are undated (the date of the first edition is not known) and completely engraved -- a rarity for a cookbook. The title on this copy lists Kidder's address as "Queen Street, near St. Thomas Apostles," his location from around 1723 onwards. ESTC dates this issue to 1740, though it's not clear on what evidence. "Although Kidder ran a pastry school, his recipes covered the whole range of soups, salads, meat, fish, poultry, sauces, and jellies, as well as pies and tarts. His recipes were repeatedly plagiarized throughout the eighteenth century, yet Kidder seems not to have plagiarized recipes himself. He probably taught his students to make established favourites, so even if his Receipts may not be especially inventive, it is a valuable record of 170 standard English dishes of the day, accompanied by attractive designs for pie shapes and decorations. The first recipe for puff pastry (identical to the standard commercial product of today) to appear in print is Kidder's" (ODNB). ESTC T9 … [Click Below for Full Description]

2). Quérard, II, 228. 1). Quérard, I, 267. [Attributes: Firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible in Latin].
Venice: Nicolaum Pezzan 1723. Antoine Vitre (1595Ð1674) was a highly regarded French printer and editor. He served as the King's printer for Oriental languages and printed several works with Arabic fonts, notably the Paris Polyglot Bible, edited by Guy Michel Le Jay in 1645, which embraces the first printed texts of the Syriac Old Testament edited by Gabriel Sionita. This edition includes a geographical table by Augustin Lubin (1624-1695), who served as geographer to the King. Quarto. [20], 1060, liv [i.e. lxiv] pp. Title printed in black adn red. Text in double columns. Illustrated with upwards of 200 fine woodcuts, 2 3/4" x 5," each within a decorative border. Attractively bound in full tan antique-style polished calf, spine stamped in gilt and black with red morocco label, edges sprinkled red, new endpapers Edges very lightly foxed. A very good, appealing copy. An important feature of this edition is the over 200 fine woodcut illustrations. We have been unable to determine the artist, but they are quite striking. They doubtless were used in earlier editions, as well, but we do not know when they were first executed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

His chronicle is adorned with impressive engravings of rare subjects, views of cities as well as everyday life scenes. His detailed descriptions make his account one of the first travelogues in which the force of the written discourse equals the impact of the illustrations.
