In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gichtel, Johann Georg u. Johann Georg Graber
Johann Georg Graber, 1723. 8°. 10, 175 pg. Extremely rare first edition of Gichtel¿s mystical anthropology, with five magnificent handcolored plates (one double page) in a splendid leather binding. The coloured plates are spectacular. This famous book is usually found in black and white and missing one or two plates. Some of these plates are reproduced in Zadrobilek¿s Opus Magnum, pg. 205 & 206, and one full size on pg. 184. However the plates in Zadrobilek, rather washed out, are from the second edition of the work. The Introduction states:¿These are the images of the inner man, that our author has kept secret for fifteen years, until the end of his life; and we, for ten years, since his death.¿ The first two plates depicts the Perfect Man, reintegrated and illuminated according to the Three Principles of the Divine Essence. The fourth plate depicts the Natural, earthly Man, darkened, which abides in the World of Stars and Elements. The fifthe plates shows the Man reborn in Christ. The engravings are fabulous in their execution. The photos cannot reporduce in their accuracy the splendid washes used on the copperplates. Condition: very good, some minimal soiling, a tear that was in the fourth plate has been profesionally restored on the back. However, it was not touching the manikin, only the outer space of the figure. Overall, a splendid copy, very hard to find with all engravings, especially handcoloured. More photos available on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

G. Kohlesius, 1723. Small 4to (19.0 x 16.2 cm). Title page, [ii], 100 pp., one engraved map of the Nürenberg area and one peculiar engraving showing a crossbowman on a beehive with two coats-of-arms: one of Crenan, Leidlarius, Eschanson and Butigul, and one engraved initial letter. Medieval-style contemporary parchment binding with hand-tooled hunting scenes including deer, birds and lions. Edges red. A most curious and probably rare book, being a thesis on apiculture and forestry containing 24 chapters and appendices written in Latin. These are followed by a "Mantissa documentorum quae ad historiam Butigulariorum item et Zeidelariorum atque Forestariorum Norimbergensium, magis illustrandam, facere possunt" - a series of documents numbered I-XVIIII [SIC] being letters in Latin and, later, High German, with Latin comments. These deal mainly with legal matters on forestry and the use of woods (known as "Wald-Ordnung"), and apiculture rights (so-called "Hönig-Geld", or "honey money") in the area around Nürnberg in southern Germany. Christian Gottlieb Schwarz (1675-1751) was a philosophy and history professor in Altdorf; Johann Hieronymus Braun was one of his students. The binding is highly unusual, and a work of art in itself. A very good, clean copy.

[CIREZ (Adrien-Joseph)]
S.l. [Lille], s.d.

[Click Below for Full Description]
