1723. 8vo (195 × 122 mm), pp. [8], 207, 202–429, [1]; complete despite pagination; some light spotting, more so in the margins; contemporary sprinkled calf, rubbed, joints cracked but firm, spine gilt in compartments, extremities chipped, leather spine label lettered gilt. Unacknowledged second edition, ‘a reissue of “An impartial history of the life and actions of Peter Alexowitz”, London, 1723 [1722], with the table of contents added at front, and text (covering the death of the Czar) at end’ (ESTC), thereby making it one of the earliest ‘complete’ English biographies of Peter the Great (1682–1725). In the past, the book has been attributed to Defoe (see Moore 451, for the first edition), but Furbank & Owens argue otherwise: ‘[This is] a lengthy and eulogistic account of the life and career of Peter the Great Defoe, in the Review, frequently criticised Peter the Great as a brutal despot, and a protest from the Czar once nearly got him into serious trouble. It thus seems unlikely that he would later have produced such a uniformly flattering biography’ (Defoe De-attributions 451). Cat. Russica H-928; Minzloff, Pierre le Grand dans la littérature étrangère 38, 3, 2. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

STUKELEY, William.
SOLE EDITION of Stukeley's Goulstonian lecture. Plates 1 and 2 of the spleen are printed in red and green respectively and are the first anatomical plates printed in colour in England. All the plates, including the frontispiece and the plates of the elephant, were from drawings by Stukeley himself. The last part of the book (pp. 89-108) is the report of the dissection of an elephant which Stukeley had made with Sir Hans Sloane in London in 1720, together with a report of an earlier dissection done in India in 1715. These are two of the earliest reports of anatomical dissections of an elephant. Stukeley was a physician, clergyman, celebrated antiquary, and Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal College of Physicians. It was to Stukeley that Newton told the story of the falling apple and of how it was his inspiration for the theory of universal gravitation. Cole library 1296. Russell, British anatomy, 784.

The uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Dalmann; this is one of the "meritorious catalogues recommended by J.G. Schelhorn."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 225. Taylor states that he was tempted to include all the catalogues from Schelhorn's list found in his Anleitung, including the Dalmann, to his own list of catalogues of private libraries recommended for reference use (pp. 223-66 in Book Catalogues). This was a large library of 3634 lots (1426 lots of folios, 1305 lots of quartos, and 903 lots of octavos and smaller format books). There are an unusual number of 16th-century Spanish books, what appears to be a wonderful set of De Bry, early books in Greek, fine architectural books of the 16th and 17th century, and some rather good incunabula. Manuscripts are included. Very good copy. ❧ Loh, VI, p. 129.
