SMITH, Adam
Complete 3-volume set. 8vo. Full calf with raised bands and gilt spine lettering and decorations. 6pp, ix, lxv, 360pp; vi, 514pp; v, 499pp. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Very good. Mild edgewear, but with spine gilt bright and fresh. A tight, handsome later printing of this seminal work of political economy by the Scottish philosopher (1723-90), first published in 1776 and often considered the first modern text on economics. Inner flyleaf of Volume I bears an interesting nonauthorial gift inscription: "Presented by the Trustees / of / Manchester College, York / To / Mr. Richard Martineau / As the Third Prize / for Diligence, Regularity, and / Proficiency / during the Session of 1820-21. / Will'm. Turner / Visitor." Martineau (1804-65) was a cousin of noted English writer and social theorist Harriet Martineau, himself a partner in Whitbread's Brewery and wealthy businessman. WILLIAM TURNER (1788-1853) was an English Unitarian minister and biographer who tutored philosophy and mathematics at Manchester College from 1809 to 1827. Each front pastedown also bears the handsome armorial bookplate of book collector Christopher Freville Huntley (1912-2008). An attractive early set of this important treatise with an interesting provenance to boot.

Jean-Baptiste Rousseau
London - Jacob Tonson and Jean Watts, 1723 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The works of Jean-Baptiste Rousseau. First edition. Complete in two volumes. With beautifully decorative head and tail pieces throughout both volumes, and an engraved frontispiece to volume I. Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (6 April 1671 17 March 1741) was a French poet. He was born in Paris, the son of a shoemaker, and was well educated. As a young man, he gained favour with Boileau, who encouraged him to write. He went to London as an attache with the French diplomat Tallard, and, in days when literature still led to high position, seemed likely to achieve success. His poems, as yet printed only singly or in manuscript, acquired him a great reputation, due to the dearth of genuine lyrical poetry between Jean Racine and Andre de Chenier. In 1701 he was made a member of the Academie des inscriptions. Few writers were so frequently reprinted during the 18th century. With bookplate of Chillingham Castle to pastedowns and copperplate inscription to front free endpaper of volume II; The Earl of Tankerville, his Lordship's book, 1736. Condition: In calf bindings. Externally, rather worn; all boards held by cords only. Internally, front blank of volume I and rear free endpaper of volume II are detached, but textblocks complete andotherwise generally firmly bound. Small numbered label to both front free endpapers. Generally bright and clean but with the odd spot. Well preserved for its age - would benefit from a sympathetic rebind. Overall: GOOD ONLY with a very good interior.

CARPZOV, Benedikt.
1723. Artikeldetails Benedicti Carpzovii, JC. Consiliarii Electoralis Saxonici, Practiae Novae Imperialis Saxonicae Rerum Criminalium... CARPZOV, Benedikt. Lpz., Fridrich Gleditschius 1723. Editio Undecima, A Multis Mendis, Quibus Priores Editiones Scatebant, Vindicata ..., 3 Bde in 1 geb. 2°. 5 Bll., 298; (8) 371; (8) 356 S., 46 Bll. Pgmt. d. Zt. Carpzov stand i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. N.T. Greek. 1723. Mill
Lipsiae: Sumptibus filii J. Friderici Gleditschii, 1723. Folio (40 cm, 15.75"). [20], 168, [2] pp.; 632 pp.; illus. Based on John Mill's much-lauded 1707 edition of the Greek New Testament, this is the second issue of Ludolph Kuster's revised version, originally published in 1710. A scholar from the Westphalia region of Germany, Kuster (1670–1716) specialized in paleography and Greek; this printing includes his preface and Prolegomena, and extensive commentary in Latin below the main text. Using twelve new manuscripts in his research, Kuster significantly added to Mill's (1645–1707) collation. The title-page, printed in red and black, features a => hand-colored engraved vignette of the Virgin Mary enthroned above the Earth, flanked by an eagle, a lion, a bull, and an angel, representing the Four Evangelists, and there are => five additional, large, illustrative hand-colored engraved vignettes functioning as headpieces in the text. Printed double-column and divided in the middle of each page by a paragraph of citations, the text is dotted by a variety of woodcut floriated and historiated initials, and factotum Greek capitals. Provenance: J. Provost largely written in light blue ink on title-page. Darlow & Moule 4735. Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands accented with gilt ruling; gilt center devices in spine compartments, gilt red and green morocco author/title labels, place and date (misprinted 1721) gilt-stamped collector-style at base; red speckled edges. Ex-library: stamp on bottom edge, faded red stamp on half-title an … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORQUEMADA, Juan de
Madrid,: Franco,, 1723.. Three volumes, folio, with engraved titles and a folding map with original handcolouring; neat old library stamps in several places; a handsome set in eighteenth-century Spanish polished marbled calf, double crimson morocco spine labels. This is the second and best edition of Torquemada's book, with the important map in rare and handsome original colour. This map (which did not appear in the 1615 Seville edition) centres on the Pacific, and shows the Chinese coast, the Philippines, Solomons, New Guinea and "Tierra Austral" to the west and Mexico and South America to the east. It is more often seen uncoloured. The preface mentions the extreme rarity of the first edition - only three copies were known in Madrid in 1723 - and explains that most copies had apparently been lost in a shipwreck, presumably en route to Mexico. The book is especially important in the literature of Pacific exploration because of Torquemada's account of Quiros' voyage of 1605, in which he sailed from Callao to locate the fabled Southern Continent. The earliest extensive description of the expedition to be printed, this remained the only reliable source available to navigators, geographers and historians until the nineteenth century. Celsus Kelly ("The narrative of Pedro Fernandez de QuirÛs" in Historical Studies, Australia and New Zealand IX/34, May 1960) has shown that Torquemada had access to Quiros' own account of the voyage as well as to the journal of Munilla, the commissary of the Franciscans who was also on the voyage. In fact Torquemada probably met Quiros in Mexico Cit … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANUSCRIPT. POOR LAW.
[1723?] This appears to be a manuscript draft proposal, written on 7 folio sheets, to be presented to Parliament, for the establishment of workhouses, workhouse hospitals, and houses of correction, the appointment of Justices of the Peace and overseers of the poor, and details for the regulation, funding, and administration of these proposals. There are a number of corrections and deletions, indicating a work in progress rather than a fair copy. Each sheet is neatly folded, the final one a little dusted on the reverse, with slight wear to folds, and a neat marginal repair. The sixteenth century increase in poverty led to a system of parish based poor relief evolving from Acts of 1597 and 1601 and lasting, with modification, until 1834. The Acts created a poor rate and overseers to care for the 'settled' impotent poor of every parish. The able-bodied were to be set to work. In their homes the 'deserving' poor received 'outrelief' in cash, food, clothing, fuel, rent and medical aid. Since poverty was created by unemployment, parishes were empowered to 'set the poor on work' in 'Abiding and Working Houses'. Although undated, this manuscript was most likely drafted just after Knatchbull's Act of 1722 which permitted parishes or groups of parishes to build or rent workhouses to 'receive the labour' of their inmates. Refusal to enter meant ineligibility for relief. By 1776 the basic pattern of a Kent workhouse system had emerged. Some 132 workhouses had accommodation, sometimes shared, for 5,819 inmates. Lamy, Bernardo (Bernard Lamy)
Lugduni (Lyons): Jacobum Certe, 1723. Editio Novissima (New edition). Hardcover. vg. Quarto. [20], 422, [62]pp (Tables and Index). Original marbled calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Printer's device on title page. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. In this work, Bernard Lamy, the renowned French Oratorian mathematician and theologian, calls in question the historical character of the book of Tobias and book of Judith, and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This study examines also such subjects as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land, a description of the Tabernacle and Temple, a history of the scriptures, and a great many tangential matters like the plants, animals, minerals, diseases, and customs mentioned in the Bible. This book is exquisitely illustrated with 1 in text engraving, and 22 fine copper plate engravings bound at rear (including 11 folding). One folding plate shows the Greek & Hebrew alphabets. Others include 11 plates depicting animals and plants, two maps, a plan of Jerusalem, a detailed temple plan, a priest with garments, a rabbi with tefillin, and 3 charts of coinage and measurements. Some age wear along edges of covers. Gold tooling partly faded on spine. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
