[Click Below for Full Description]

Backstrip is half gone in Volume 1. What is left is the top 3 panels , which includes the title. This is detached , but I will let the next owner decide how to proceeed with this. The boards are VG considering the age and size.. ROHAULT, Jacques
London: James Knapton, 1723. 1723 1st ed ENGLISH Physics Isaac NEWTON Illustrated Optics by Rohault & ClarkeJacques Rohault was an important French philosopher during the 17th-century, particularly in the field of Cartesian philosophy. It also covered studies on gravity and other references to Newtonian theories. This extremely rare and valuable English edition is important not only for its original studies by Rohault, but because of its commentary on Isaac Newton in the extensive footnotes. Samuel Clarke wrote copious notes which exposed many of the beliefs in Cartesianism. Clarke initially translated Rohault's French edition into Latin but then translated it further into English in 1723.Item number: #5616 Price: $1500ROHAULT, Jacques Rohault's system of natural philosophy : illustrated with Dr. Samuel Clarke's notes taken mostly out of Sir Isaac Newton's philosophy. GHIRLANDI, Ferdinando
In Firenze, Nella Stamperia di Michele Nesteous, 1723. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, pp. 418, [1] advertisement, [1] blank; 31, [1] blank; with engraved frontispiece; engraved head-and tailpieces on most pages; first and last few leaves browned at edges, but otherwise clean and crisp throughout; in contemporary sheep, spine gilt in compartments; some wear to covers, and worming to spine; one inch loss at foot of spine. Uncommon first edition, complete with an otherwise unrecorded appendix, of this collection of poems, largely on religious subjects, by the Pistoia poet Francesco Maria Ghirlandi (1650-1726). Ghirlandi, who took the name Ferdinando on his entrance into the Order of Minims, was the author of several volumes of poetry, usually sonnets. With only a few exceptions, that pattern is repeated in the present collection; the sonnets cover a vast variety of topics, including condemnations of lewd poetry, the idea that life is a dream, the accumulation of wealth in old age, and the nature of death, hell, and paradise. Other sonnets relate to particular occasions, including weddings, the death of the mathematician Alessandro Marchetti, and, in many instances, the profession or clothing of nuns; others warn of the dangers of dice games and other vices. Sonnets are addressed to a number of bodies and people, including the Accademia della Crusca and the poet Maria Selvaggia Borgini. An appendix, under the title ¬ĎAltre poesie di Fernandino Ghirlandi da Pistoia Agguinte alle sopradette Stampate a Fiorenza, contains translations from the psalms, as well as sixteen additional sonnets; th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Caucasus - Russio-Persian War of 1722-1723].
Nuremberg, Johann Ernst Adelbulner for Wolfgang Moritz Endter's heirs, 1723. 8vo. (14), 398 pp. With 4 folding engr. plates (lacks frontispiece). Period quarter vellum with marbled papered boards. Rare first issue of the first edition: the "very latest account of Kazan, Astrakhan, Georgia and many other Tartaries, regions, and provinces tributary and subject to the Tsar, Sultan and Shah". A scarce work thoroughly describing the regions of Southern Russia, the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, and one of the first books on the Russio-Persian War of 1722-23, published anonymously just a year after the end of the war. The author describes the operations which ended with a Russian victory and the subsequent Russian annexation of the Persian cities Derbent, Baku, Rasht, and the northern Persian provinces of Shirvan, Gilyan and others. He also describes all regions influenced by the war: the Volga River and all its major cities, including Kazan and Astrakhan (as the two main centers of the organization of the Persian campaign); the Caucasus: Georgia, Mingrelia, Dagestan and others; the Western Caspian Sea region and its largest cities Baku, Derbent and Shemakha. Remarkably, Baku inhabitants are described as sick and lethargic, due to contamination of the water by Naphta (oil). The text describes the geography of the Caucasus Mountains, including Mount Elbrus, the manners and customs of the people, genealogy of local Georgian and Mingrelian princes and others. With three engraved views of Derbent, Baku and Shemakha (the Baku view showing various images of burning oil wells) and an eng … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Checkley, John]
Boston: Re-printed by Tho. Fleet, and are to be sold by Benjamin Eliot in Boston...and in most other towns within the colonies of Connecticut and Rhode-Island, 1723. [2], v, [1], 63, [1] pp, stitched as issued. Original plain paper wrappers [front wrapper detached, last leaf partially attached to rear wrap]. Corners rounded and light spotting, else Very Good.A significant and controversial early American imprint. Attributing authorship to Checkley, DAB says he "had become a firm believer in the Apostolic origin of Episcopacy. A somewhat dangerous notoriety began to attach to him from his expressions of religious opinions...His 'Modest Proof of the Order and Government Settled by Christ', which had a wide circulation, was answered by Edward Wigglesworth, and started a war of pamphlets in which Checkley again joined." Later Checkley became a missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, which sought to render Anglican Episcopacy the established church in the American colonies. His views were anathema to ministers and others who nurtured homegrown American religious institutions-- and, later, political institutions-- independent of English domination. The London edition was printed in 1705 [ESTC T81893]. This is the first and only 18th century American printing. Evans 2417.
