Manuscript; Kingdom of Hungary
1723. Eighteenth-Century Manuscript on the Constitutional Law of Hungary [Manuscript]. [Kingdom of Hungary]. [Summa Tripartiti]. [N.p., c. 1723]. [125] ff. Octavo (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary three-quarter vellum over patterned paper-covered boards. Moderate rubbing with wear to extremities, scuffing to boards, corners bumped, some chipping to spine ends. Light toning, text in Latin, written in a fine secretarial hand, ownership inscription (of Ignatius Modrovich, "Advocati," dated 1811) to front free endpaper. $1,500. * Free of cross-outs or other signs of revision, and with a detailed alphabetical table of contents, this appears to be a fair-copy of an outline of the Hungarian Tripartitum. Compiled in 1514 by Istvan Werboczy [c.1465-1541], a Hungarian jurist and statesman, this collection of early customary laws, though never incorporated formally, was regarded as the second pillar of the Hungarian constitution. It was a de facto law-book of Hungary until 1848. According to the doctrine of the Holy Crown, which appeared in the Tripartitum, the king and the legally equal noblemen formulated the "corpse of the Holy Crown," which symbolized the Hungarian state.

Pietro Giannone (1676-1748) Italian Neapolitan lawyer, scholar and historian. His great work, "Dell’istoria civile del Regno di Napoli" describes the development of civil and legal institutions in the Kingdom of Naples from the fall of the Roman empire to the first decades of the 18th century. Giannone argued for the dominance of civil power over that of the Roman Catholic Church. Publication of the work caused a major controversy, including public demonstrations organized by the Neapolitan clergy. The book was ultimately condemned by the Church and Giannone fled Italy for Austria. Wolfgang Mauritius, Nuremberg, 1723. tahl, Georg Ernst (1659-1734). Fundamenta chymiae dogmaticae & experimentalis. . . . 4to. [8], 255, [25]pp. Nuremberg: Johann Ernst Adelbulner for Wolfgang Mauritz, 1723. 198 x 161 mm. Modern half vellum, floral-patterned boards. Light toning, but a very good, crisp copy. First Edition. Stahl was the originator of the phlogiston theory, which dominated chemistry until the end of the eighteenth century. Stahl took the structure of his theory from 17th-century alchemist Johann Joachim Becher, who had stated air, water and earth to be the three elementary principles; water and earth were the basis of all material things, and Becher further subdivided the principle of earth into the three principles of substantiality, combustibility and weight/ductility/volatility. Stahl elaborated from Becher's "second earth" a new chemical principle, phlogiston, representing the principle of combustibility that combined with other chemical substances to form compounds. Experimental evidence for the existence of phlogiston came largely from metals and minerals, particularly from the reversible relationship of metals and their calces: when a metal was heated intensely, its phlogiston was driven off and a calx appeared, but when phlogiston was reintroduced to the calx (by heating it with carbon, oil, pitch or other phlogiston-rich materials), the metal reappeared. Air did not combine with phlogiston but received it when it was liberated during combustion; air could absorb only a limited amount of phlogiston, and when that limit was reached, combustion could n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lpz., Fridrich Gleditschius 1723. Editio Undecima, A Multis Mendis, Quibus Priores Editiones Scatebant, Vindicata ..., 3 Bde in 1 geb. 2°. 5 Bll., 298; (8) 371; (8) 356 S., 46 Bll. Pgmt. d.
[Attributes: First Edition]

[Massachusetts Laws]
Boston, 1723. [bound with:] THE CHARTER GRANTED BY THEIR MAJESTIES KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN MARY, TO THE INHABITANTS OF THE PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND; THE TABLE [i.e. the index to ACTS...]; and twenty-four consecutive printings of session laws through 1723. Quarto. Contemporary tooled calf. Calf moderately worn; covers bowed. Early ink scribblings and numerical notations on the endpapers. Minor dampstaining toward the rear. Printed ownership label affixed to front pastedown. Overall very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. The earliest obtainable version of the Massachusetts-Bay colony laws, since the 17th-century versions are virtually unobtainable today. Second issue, with the reprinting notice on the verso of the titlepage, with the CHARTER... preceding the ACTS... and the second edition of THE TABLE containing pagination through 1721 (also bound in prior to the ACTS... titlepage). All of the session laws which followed through 1723 are present (they are continuously paginated, although issued periodically). This version of the laws would have been made obsolete by the 1726 version of the laws, when the session law numbering would have begun all over again. A nice early colonial legal volume, in contemporary condition.
