[52] leaves, entirely engraved throughout, including frontispiece portrait of the author in wig (presumed 2nd state) by Robert Sheppard, and 8 engraved plates (three folding) of patterns and ornamental designs for pies and pastries. Without ad leaf found in some copies. 8vo. Kidder (1666-1737) ran a popular pastry school, his obituary in the London Magazine claiming that he "taught near 6000 Ladies the Art of Pastry." His school had several different locations in the 1720s and '30s, the different addresses resulting in title-page variants. All editions are undated (the date of the first edition is not known) and completely engraved - a rarity for a cookbook. The title on this copy lists Kidder's address as "Queen Street, near St. Thomas Apostles," his location from around 1723 onwards. ESTC dates this issue to 1740, though it's not clear on what evidence. "Although Kidder ran a pastry school, his recipes covered the whole range of soups, salads, meat, fish, poultry, sauces, and jellies, as well as pies and tarts. (Halley, Edmund)
EARLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE PAPER IN WHICH HALLEY FIRST PREDICTS AND DESCRIBES WHAT WOULD COME TO BE KNOWN AS 'HALLEY'S COMET'. Visible every 75 to 76 years, Halley's is the only short orbit comet regularly visible to the naked eye, as well as the only comet one might conceivably see twice in a lifetime. Halley's research on comets was published in 1705 in the Philosophical Transactions and separately at Oxford in the same year in Latin and at London in English with the title "A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets". The currently offered stand alone publication in this volume of Curiosa, is the first such separate publication since 1705; additionally, this is a first edition of Curiosa. Edmund Halley (1656-1742) was an English astronomer, physicist, mathematician, and geophysicist best known for this work: the computation of the orbit of what came to be known as Halley's Comet. As noted above, Halley published "A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets" in Latin in 1705. In it, he catalogued his research culled from searching the historical records of 24 comets appearing near Earth between 1337 to 1698. Halley thought those observations suspiciously similar in terms of orbit and other parameters. As a result, it led him, in this work, to propose that one comet might be visiting Earth again and again, by his reckoning, approximately every 75 to 76 years. The comet in question had appeared in 1531, 1607, and 1682. Halley surmised that the comet would return in 1758, though he did not live long enough to see its return. Although Halley's work had aroused the interest of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Juli 1715 in Hainichen gestorben 13. ENGELSCHALL, Johann Christian
One folding engraved view of the city, one folding engraved map of the city and its environs, & one folding printed table. Title printed in red & black. 6 p.l., 304, [12] pp. Small 4to, cont. half-vellum & paste-paper boards (minor browning). Leipzig: Heirs of F. Lanckisch, 1723. First edition of what appears to be the first description of the great mining city of Johanngeorgenstadt in the heart of Saxony's Erzgebirgkreis, on the border with the Czech Republic. This is an uncommon book; WorldCat locates no copy in North America and this is the first time I have owned a copy. Mining began in Johanngeorgenstadt in the 17th century and by 1680 there were about 100 silver, iron, and tin mines in the town and surrounding area. It should be mentioned that in 1789, the chemist M.H. Klaproth first discovered uranium from the Georg Wagsfort mine in the city (see Weeks, Discovery of the Elements, pp. 266-67). The book describes the city, its buildings, its phenomenal growth in the 17th and early 18th centuries (today it has lost 90% of its population), the mines and their production (very detailed), and metal works (again, very detailed). The engraved plates depict the city, its buildings, and mine locations. Fine copy. Stamp of the "I.F.H. Schlosser Bibl." (a private library) on verso of title. From the library of Carl Sahlin (1861-1943), industrialist and a writer on the science of mining and metallurgy.

"In 1718 Cassini (.) completed his determination of the meridian of Paris, extending as far as Dunkirk the Paris-Amiens axis previously measured by Picard. Cassini used the results of … [Click Below for Full Description]
