Lamy, Bernardo (Bernard Lamy)
Lugduni (Lyons): Jacobum Certe, 1723. Editio Novissima (New edition). Hardcover. g to g+. Quarto. [30], 602, [11] leaves (Plates), [20]pp (Tables), 54pp (Index). Original full calf, with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Publisher's device on title page. Title in red and black lettering. Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. Bernard Lamy (1640-1715) was a French Oratorian mathematician and theologian. Originally published in 1696, "Apparatus biblicus" is a development of the author's "Introduction à la Lecture de l'Ecriture Sainte" (1689). In this work he calls in question the historical character of the Book of Tobias and the Book of Judith, and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This work examines also subjects such as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land, a description of the Tabernacle and Temple, a history of the scriptures, and a great many tangential matters like the plants, animals, minerals, diseases, and customs mentioned in the Bible. This book is exquisitely illustrated with 11 fine folded copper plates (2 maps; 1 plan of Jerusalem, 1 view of the Tabernacle; 1 plan of the Temple in Jerusalem; a priest with garments; a rabbi with tefillin, etc..). One folding plate shows the Greek & Hebrew alphabets. Lacking plate VI: (View of the Temple). Included, 11 full-page engraved figures depicting animals and plants mentioned in the Bible. Parisiis,: Apud Guillelmum Cavelier, MDCC.XXIII. [1723]. Parisiis,: Apud Guillelmum Cavelier,, MDCC.XXIII. [1723].. [ii blank], [xii], 352, [x], [x] pp. Small 8vo (10 x 16,5 cm.). Contemporary full marbled calf, spine with raised bands and in compartments gilt decorated with floral design; contemporary marbled end-papers; speckled edges (corners very slightly bumped and worn; hinges show some light traces of use, but a solid and attractive binding). With a few woodcut figures in the text. ¶ Lindeboom 315. First published at Leiden in 1917, this is the first edition printed in France but without Boerhaave's consent (all Cavelier Boerhaave imprints are pirate editions). "One of Boerhaave's pupils published an adaptation of his "Libellus de materie medica", greatly amplified from the lectures of his master. The succes of this spurious edition, followed by many reprints, show clearly how much Boerhaave's teaching on the medical treatement of diseases was valued" (Lindeboom p. 59). Nice copy with ample margins of a quite rare and early edition. Ancient owner's signature (Dr. Laperche) on title.

April 1728.
