Vaugondy,de Robert (1723 - 1786 ) Paris

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grand … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hooker, Richard
London: Printed for John Walthoe et al, 1723. Original 1723 Edition. Brown leather boards/spine. Gilt double ruling borders to covers. 8 raised bands on spine. Red leather title block, with gilt lettering, between bands 2/3. Bw engraved half title and facing page (portrait of Hooker); title page in bright red/black print. Heavy at 8 pounds and will require extra postage. Richard Hooker was born in March 1554 in Exeter. He was educated in Exeter until he was sent, with Bishop Jewel as his patron, to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He graduated MA in 1577, and became a fellow of the college in the same year. He became assistant professor of Hebrew at the University, and took holy orders, becoming a clergyman in the Church of England in 1581. Hooker was Master of the Temple (i.e. Dean of the Law School) in 1585-1591. Thereafter he lived in London and then at Boscombe, Wiltshire. He died at Bishopsbourne, in Kent, where he had become vicar. Hooker's masterpiece is a long work in eight books called Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. The first four books were published together in 1593, the fifth was published in 1597, and the rest appeared after his death. Although the last three volumes were Hooker's work, they seem to have been heavily edited. The work represents one of the most distinguished examples of Elizabethan literature. 1723. London: Printed by W. Burton, for J. Hooke... 1723. Small 4to, (8), 47, (1), (32), 92 pp. Woodcut initials and head pieces. Life of Pascal has a separate title page and pagination. Full calf, ruled in gilt, raised bands and gilt red morocco label on backstrip. Joints split, cords still firm, foredge corners worn. Old signature on front free endpaper. Top corner of title page excised (signature removed?) with loss to ink inscription on verso of title page. Note in a different hand on final blank (see below). § First edition of Jesup's life of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, largely based on Thomas More's writings, and his translation of Gilberte Perier's biography of her brother, Blaise Pascal. The latter work was also issued separately in the same year. This copy was given to a boy called Frederick Murray as a prize (a "praise book") by P.N. Paschoud V.D.M. on May 4, 1727 in Little Chelsea. Paschoud records the presentation in the front of the book and Murray records his receipt of it in the back. Murray also lists the various tickets he was given, presumably steps towards being awarded this book. The minister is probably Pierre Noë (or Peter Noach) Paschoud ordained in 1716 and connected with the French Huguenot chapel in Little Chelsea. ESTC T41115.
