(1671–1743) was a pioneering physician, early proto-psychologist, philosopher and mathematician. Born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he opened a medical practice in Bath in 1702. He is best known for his contribution to vegetarianism. Cheyne was acquainted with Sir Isaac Newton and provoked Newton to publish his Quadratures and with it, his Light & Colours. Newton later offered him financial support to publish Fluxionum methodus inversa (The Inverse Method of Fluxions), but apparently he turned down the offer. Newton refused to see him any more. In order to succeed in medical practice, Cheyne tried to develop a rapport with his patients by regularly visiting the local taverns where they spent time, a practice common among medical practitioners of the day. He became a popular figure of local social life, and the quantity of rich food and drink he consumed in consequence left him grossly obese and very unhealthy. [Edinburgh], printed in the year, 1723. 8vo., lx + 25-158pp., tear in gutter of one leaf (pp.137-8), touching letters but with no discernible loss, contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, spine worn. First edition: rare outside British libraries, ESTC & OCLC together finding copies at NYPL + Illinois + Kansas in US + Guelph in Canada + N.L. of Australia. James Sharp (1618-1679), the highly political archbishop of St. Andrews from 1661, was influential in both church and state and was admired and reviled in perhaps equal measure. His severe measures for the annihilation of covenanting principles, his compromised position in the James Mitchell affair, rumours about his marriage and absurd allegations that his wife dabbled in witchcraft, all led to the Archbishop's eventual assassination. On the 3rd of May 1679, when he was driving home to St. Andrews, his coach was waylaid by a band of conventiclers, two lairds, a weaver, and six tenant farmers and he was shot and stabbed to death.

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. Sthlm, J. H. Werner, 1723. 4:o. (90) s. Tagen ur band och insatt i trevligt mörkbrunt stänkdekorerat pappomslag (Johanna Röjgård). Några blad lite nära skurna. Liten lagning nedtill i blad E1. Klemming Sveriges dramatiska litteratur s. 68. Han fortsätter: "the latinske bokstäfwer äro oförlikneligen lättare at kännas igen/ at läras/ läsas och skrifwas".
