BORGIA, ALESSANDRO
Nocera Umbra: Mariotti, 1723. XVI, 581 pagine. 30x23 cm.Rilegatura coeva in piena pergamena, con qualche lieve abrasione. Titoli in oro al dorso. All'interno lievi fioriture e bruniture, più accentuate sulle ultime carte.

QUARLES, Francis
Printed for A. Bettesworth et al., London, 1723. [8], 375pp, [1]. With an engraved half-title, and a further 94 engravings in the text. Contemporary gilt-ruled speckled calf. A trifle rubbed and marked, joints split. Hinges exposed, ink ownership inscriptions of 'William H. Davis' to recto of FFEP and head of p.9, small worm-trail to lower margins throughout, light dust-soiling. First printed in 1635, the aptly named Emblems, by English renaissance poet Francis Quarles (1592-1644), consists of divine and moral poetry, illustrated throughout with allegorical baroque designs, promoting the uncontroversial characteristics typically identified with good Christian living. The work, which proved the most successful Quarles produced, was dedicated to Edward Benlowes, who had provided inspiration in presenting the poet with copies of two highly esteemed seventeenth-century Jesuit continental emblem books; Pia Desideria (1624) and Typus Mundi (1627). Quarles produced a second poetic-emblem book, the Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man in 1638, and the two works were collected together in over 30 editions before 1800. ESTC T94281. The Scottish economist Adam Smith (1723-1790) was the most influential thinker in the history of capitalist economics. The publication of his book ‘An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations' in 1776 established him as the single most influential figure in the development of modern economic theory. He describes the workings of a market 4, 54, 228, , the division of labor in production, the nature of wealth in relation to money, the inability of governments to manage economies, and the difference between productive and nonproductive labor. Smith's standardwork was reprinted many times in the eightteenth and nineteenth centuries and also in more recent times his work is being published (even a full text electronic edition is available on the internet). The present set is a rare, early edition, printed in London in 1793, only a few years after Smith's death. B0062. 4, 54, 228, ; Philosophy.

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sansons grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Spon’s account of his and Wheler’s journey to Greece had appeared four years earlier, in 1678. It was when Wheler thought that an English translation was to be made that he decided to publish his own version of the journey. He had left England in 1673 on a general tour of Europe when he met Spon in Italy. He had already some antiquarian studies with Foy-Vaillant when he and Spon decided to visit Greece. Their travels together took place 1675-1676. Wheler was especially interested in botany and topography. The map is very interesting … [Click Below for Full Description]
