Arredondo, Martin
One of the most important works on horse veterinary published in Spain. 1723. Madrid. Francisco del Hierro. Folio (276 x 200 mm). 6 ff., 380 pp. Recent calf antique, boards tooled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Paper almost uniformly browned, as expected due to the poor paper used for the edition, else good. 2,000 $ Early edition, one of the most significant treatises on albeyteria made in Spain in the 17th century, demonstrated by the several editions it went through; Arredondo´s work on the veterinary on horses was well accepted in his time and into the next century. On pp.147 we find the full-page woodcut illustrating a horse surrounded by the zodiac signs and their influence on the animal. The work is divided in three parts, dealing with pathology, therapeutics, antidotes and pharmacology, anatomy (some of it after Ruini). The albeyteria was the science dedicated to the maintenance, treating and curing of animals, especially equine; it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary black goatskin, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt tooled with scrolling floriate tools, stars and rosettes, sides with concentric gilt panelling, a triangular pattern at each side made up of floriate tools, the inner panel with crowns, stars and rosettes, gilt edges, gilt roll tool turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Printed in double columns and ruled in red throughout; woodcut initials. A few light scratches to back cover, joints only slightly rubbed, occasional foxing or toning. A very good copy. A very attractive early Georgian Bible bound together with The Book of Common Prayer (Oxford: John Baskett, 1719) and The Whole Book of Psalms (London: Printed by T. Wood and S. Palmer, for the Company of Stationers, 1723). The printer, John Baskett, is better known for the luxurious but ill-fated Vinegar Bible (with its famous misprinting of the parable of the vineyard). With an appealing contemporary London provenance: a preliminary blank carries the family record of "William Sheppard & Sarah his wife", dating from 1725 to 1741, and noting the birth of their sons at Homerton, in Hackney, their christening at St. John's, Hackney, or at St. Olave's, Old Jury, City, and the friends and relatives named as "gossips" or godparents; also mentioning that "all the above mentioned six sons had the small pox in June & July 1736". WHISTON, W[illiam]
John Senex,, London, 1723. Rare broadside illustrating the the orbits of the known comets Engraved print A large, impressively engraved broadside that illustrates the solar system and the orbits of known comets. The broadside is an expression of the general interest and curiosity produced by Newton's discoveries. The orbital details of each comet, taken from Halley's catalogue published in the Philosophical Transactions, are engraved along its orbital track. The explanatory text of the planets and their orbital information is present in four engraved panels of extended text at each corner of the broadside. Finally, there are quotations from Newton's Opticks engraved as circular panels and located within the planisphere. Oddly, the illustrations of Saturn and Jupiter are prominent in the broadside. In 1759, after the work of the Alexis-Claude Clairaut and Mme Nicole-Reine E B Lepaute, the recovery of the comet sighted in 1531, 1607, and 1682 and noted by Halley, was a sensation. Clairaut had been the first to recognise and factor in the influence of the gravitational attraction of the two massive planets on the orbits of comets, and proved it with an accurate prediction of the date of return; in the process he also provided confirmation of the veracity of Newton's mechanics and dynamics. This was unknown to Senex and the makers of the broadside when it was being engraved in 1712. This copy was printed on or before 1720, with John Senex's addess, coinciding with that given by Clifton. Few copies of the earliest issues survive; of those that do, several are erroneously attribu … [Click Below for Full Description]

SYMSON, David]
Edinburgh printed in the year 1723 - 8vo., lx + 25-158pp., tear in gutter of one leaf (pp.137-8), touching letters but with no discernible loss, contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, spine worn. First edition. James Sharp (1618-1679), the highly political archbishop of St. Andrews from 1661, was influential in both church and state and was admired and reviled in perhaps equal measure. His severe measures for the annihilation of covenanting principles, his compromised position in the James Mitchell affair, rumours about his marriage and absurd allegations that his wife dabbled in witchcraft, all led to the Archbishop's eventual assassination. On the 3rd of May 1679, when he was driving home to St. Andrews, his coach was waylaid by a band of conventiclers, two lairds, a weaver, and six tenant farmers and he was shot and stabbed to death.
