Fundamenta chymiae dogmaticae & experimentalis, & quidem tum communioris physicae mechanicae pharmaceuticae ac medicae tum sublimioris sic dictae hermeticae atque alchymiae.

Nürnberg, Adelbulner für Endter, 1723.. (21,5 x 17 cm). - DSB 12, 599; Partington II, 662; Norman 2005; Cole 1244; Duveen 560; Ferchl 513; Blake 430 First edition. - "Stahl was the originator of the phlogiston theory, which dominated chemistry until the end of the 18th century... Stahl elaborated from Becher's 'second earth' a new chemical principle, phlogiston, a substance representing the principle of combustibility that combined with other chemical substances to form compounds. Experimental evidence for the existence of phlogiston came largely from metals and minerals, particularly from the reversible relationship of metals and their calces: when a metal was heated intensely, its phlogiston was driven off and a calx appeared, but when phlogiston was reintroduced to the calx... the metal reappeared. Air did not combine with phlogiston but received it when it was liberated during combustion; air could absorb only a limited amount of phlogiston, and when that limit was reached, combustion could not longer take place. The flaws in the phlogiston theory are obvious, and it did not survive the eighteenth century; however, it served as an important link between the older chemical concepts and the new, an attempt to modify the existing intellectual framework in order to account for new experimental observations" (Norman). - Recent half-vellum in old style.

Franco, Madrid 1723 - Three volumes, folio, with engraved titles and a folding map; neat old library stamps in several places; a handsome set in contemporary mottled calf, some light wear to heads of spines, red and green labels. sfo posed shot of volumes with the map open. Early Pacific voyages and important Northwest coast material. Second and best edition. The map (which did not appear in the 1615 Seville edition) centres on the Pacific, and shows the Chinese coast, the Philippines, Solomons, New Guinea and "Tierra Austral" to the west and Mexico and South America to the east. The preface mentions the extreme rarity of the first edition - only three copies were known in Madrid in 1723 - and explains that most copies had apparently been lost in a shipwreck, presumably en route to Mexico. The book is especially important in the literature of Pacific exploration because of Torquemada's account of Quiros's voyage of 1605, in which he sailed from Callao to locate the fabled Southern Continent. The earliest extensive description of the expedition to be printed, this remained the only reliable source available to navigators, geographers and historians until the nineteenth century. Celsus Kelly ("The narrative of Pedro Fernandez de Quirós" in Historical Studies, Australia and New Zealand IX/34, May 1960) has shown that Torquemada had access to Quiros's own account of the voyage as well as to the journal of Munilla, the commissary of the Franciscans who was also on the voyage. In fact Torquemada probably met Quiros in Mexico City in 1607, and again in Madrid in 1613. Kelly shows too that Torquemada probably also interviewed two other members of the expedition, the ensign Pedro López de Sojo and the sergeant Pedro García de Lumbreras.Torquemada's book is important for many other reasons, not least for its account of Legazpi's expedition to the Philippines (see Retana, 226). Hill describes the book as the "key work on the early history of Spanish North America, particularly Mexico, the Southwest and California? the primary source of Vizcaíno's 1596 and 1602 expeditions and voyage of discovery to California. It contains Father Antonio de la Ascensión's letter which relates to Vizcaíno's voyage during which most of the bays, headlands and rivers, including San Diego, were renamed. Torquemada also deals at length with Juan de Oñate's conquest of New Mexico, and briefly with the expeditions of Coronado, Alarcón, Espizo and Niza? The Mexican historian and statesman Lucas Alamán called Torquemada the Livy of New Spain? " (Hill). The section of Torquemada's book dealing with the Vizcaíno expedition was published as a separate volume by the Book Club of California in 1933. Wagner (in Spanish Voyages to the Northwest Coast) makes numerous references to Torquemada's book in connection with Vizcaíno, Legaspi, Father Antonio and others. He also details the map in Cartography of the Northwest Coast as based on the 1601 Herrera map (his 226) which named C. de Fortun and Ya de Cedros and had the name "Calilfornio" lengthwise along the peninsula. In Torquemada's version 'the Sierras Nevadas are introduced north of Nuevo Mexico. The Isla de Pajaros now is named, and the southwest cape is labeled P. Ballenas.'.         The Construction and Principal Uses of Mathematical Instruments. Translated from the French of M.Bion, Chief Instrument-Maker to the French King. To which are Added, The Construction and Uses of such Instruments as are omitted by M.Bion; particularly of those invented or improved by the English. By Edmund Stone.

      - 1st.English ed., folio, vii + 1 (errata)+ 264pp. + iv (title to Supplement and ëadvertisementí leaf) + 265-325pp., 30 folding engraved copper plates, main title in red and black and slightly soiled, pp.249-264 browned (as often), a good copy in early calf, handsomely respined. London, for John Senex & William Taylor, 1723 (and Supplement) for J.Richardson, 1758. An attractive and unusual copy with the eighteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Jos. Townsend (1739-1816), physician and one of the original honorary members of the Geological Society; the first edition of this (1723) had 264pp.+26 engraved plates; the second edition of 1758 had 325pp.+30 plates; copies of the first edition have occasionally occurred with a full complement of pages and plates almost certainly because the publisher of the second edition (Richardson) printed off more copies of the original of 1723 text and added the important supplement while adopting continuous pagination. We can find no other copy with the separate title and advertisement to the supplement as here. In the two-page ëadvertisementí (i.e. preface) to the Supplement, Stone gives his reasons for the long delay inproducing a second edition. ìimmerged in other more delightful Branches of Mathematics, especially pure Geometry and Meckanicsî (but) ìthis second impression is here published with a Supplement or Appendix, containing the Descriptions, and some of the Uses of such Instruments as were before omitted, or have been made better, as I thought since, for the Purposes designed them.î [Attributes: First Edition]

Philosophiae Liber Secundus Phisicam tum generalem Tum particularem Complectens'. Anonyme Vorlesungsmitschrift in lateinischer Sprache, braune Tinte auf Papier, gut lesbare Schrift, Blattgröße 22,6 x 16,5 cm, Schriftspiegel ca. 20 x 13 cm. Frankreich, 1723.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
