Philosophiae Liber Secundus Phisicam tum generalem Tum particularem Complectens'. Anonyme Vorlesungsmitschrift in lateinischer Sprache, braune Tinte auf Papier, gut lesbare Schrift, Blattgröße 22,6 x 16,5 cm, Schriftspiegel ca. 20 x 13 cm. Frankreich, 1723.

Apparatus Biblicus sive Manuductio ad Sacram Scripturam, Tum clarius, tum facilius intelligendam

Jacobum Certe, Lugduni (Lyons) 1723 - Quarto. [20], 422, [62]pp (Tables and Index). Original marbled calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Printer's device on title page. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. In this work, Bernard Lamy, the renowned French Oratorian mathematician and theologian, calls in question the historical character of the book of Tobias and book of Judith, and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This study examines also such subjects as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land, a description of the Tabernacle and Temple, a history of the scriptures, and a great many tangential matters like the plants, animals, minerals, diseases, and customs mentioned in the Bible. This book is exquisitely illustrated with 1 in text engraving, and 22 fine copper plate engravings bound at rear (including 11 folding). One folding plate shows the Greek & Hebrew alphabets. Others include 11 plates depicting animals and plants, two maps, a plan of Jerusalem, a detailed temple plan, a priest with garments, a rabbi with tefillin, and 3 charts of coinage and measurements. Some age wear along edges of covers. Gold tooling partly faded on spine. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A New and Exact Plan of Ye City of London and Suburbs thereof, With the addition of the New Buildings, Churches &c. to this present Year 1723 (Not extant in any other,) Laid down in such a method that in an Instant, may easily be found any Place contain'd therein.

Printed & Sold by Tho: Bowles next to the Chapter-house St. Paul?Äôs Church Yard,, London, 1723 - A city of meat eaters 620 by 1255mm. (24.5 by 49.5 inches). Engraved plan on three sheets joined, original outline hand-colour, a few marks and a few small tears skilfully repaired. Howgego 63 intermediate state between 3 and 3a. Large and detailed plan of London. The map bears grid lines for ease of reference, the major public buildings such as Westminster Abbey, The Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham House, and the Tower of London are represented as birds-eye views. The text upon the map gives the extent of London as "7500 Geometric paces, that is above 7 English Miles and a half" from west to east and "2500 paces, or 2 miles and a half" from north to south. There are about 5000 streets. The number of houses is calculated to be 110,000. The population is guessed at "by what is eaten": "There were in one Year, when it was less by two thirds [ie. in the mid seventeenth century], 67500 Beefs, 10 times as many Sheep, Besides Poultry &c. also every Year is brought into the River 400,000 at least Charldon of Coales". Also the number of "Buryings" was said to number 26,000 per year. The amount of ale and beer produced is said to be 20,000 barrels. Bowles acknowledges the source of these numbers as Sir William Petty (1623-1687), who through some crude statistical analysis calculated the population in the mid-seventeenth century. He estimated that there were 115,846 families and 695,076 souls; more than Paris, Rome, Rouen or Amsterdam, which were said to have some 500,000 souls. To the left of the text is a list of watermen and hackney carriage rates. The present plan is an intermediate state between Howgego 63 (3) and (3a). The date in the title is the same as state 3, however, an extra sheet has been added to the extend the plan to the east to include St Dunstan and Stepney; yet the plan does not include the areas of Mile End and Limehouse present in state 3a.Scale: 11 inches to 1 statute mile.

The History of the Grecian War: in eight books

London: by B. Motte; for D. Brown; D. Midwinter; B. Lintott; W. Taylor; and W. and J. Innys and B. Cowse,, 1723. Written by Thucydides. Faithfully translated from the original by Thomas Hobbes of Malmsbury. With maps describing the country. The third edition, corrected and amended. In two volumes. 2 volumes, octavo (197 × 122 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt rules, red morocco labels to style. With 2 engraved folding maps and 3 engraved plates, of which 2 are folding. Engraved bookplates of William Hanbury (1704-1768), of Kelmarsh, Northants, and his note of acquisition dated 25 Oct 1741. Some restoration to joints and extremities, pale dampstaining at beginning of vol. I, a good copy. Hobbes's translation of Thucydides, taken (unlike the only existing English version at the time) directly from the Greek, was first published in 1629. "Forty years later, in Vita Carmine Expressa, he said that he had written it so that his contemporaries might learn from the fate of Athenian democracy how much wiser one man is than the mass of men" (Macdonald & Hargreaves). The bibliography calls for a frontispiece portrait of Hobbes, but none was apparently ever inserted in this copy, nor does ESTC call for one.
