DANIEL, Gabriel
70 engraved plates. 3 p.l., xxxviii, 626 pp.; xx, 770 pp., one leaf of errata, approbation, & privilege. Two vols. Large thick 4to, fine cont. polished tree calf (head of spine of Vol. I very slightly chipped, minor foxing), spines richly gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: D. Mariette et al., 1721. First edition and a splendid set from the Macclesfield library. Daniel (1649-1728), a Jesuit historian, wrote an extremely successful history of France which first appeared in 1713 and a number of other works of history and commentaries on the writings of Descartes. This is the standard work on the history of militias in France which had played such an important role in the earlier history of that country. Before 1688, France has three kinds of organized military forces which were not professional in character nor employed full-time: the urban militia, the militia active in the countryside, and the militia protecting the coast line and borders. By the end of the 17th century, the introduction of firearms began to favor the professional soldier and militias began to lose their effectiveness. Increased fire power - muskets, pistols, and cannons - became the domain of the highly trained professional soldier. In 1688, François de Louvois, the secretary of war for Louis XIV, created royal militias to serve as auxiliary forces to the professional army. Their roles were partly to find drafts for and partly to augment the regular army. The plates depict battle formations, weaponry, devices used in sieges, fortified cities, other fortifications, bombs … [Click Below for Full Description]

After Sanson's departure in 1692, Gaudereau continued negotiations with Suleiman, after 1694 with Husayn. Having negotiated a military and commercial alliance between Persia and the French East India Company, he returned to Isfahan, which he quit for Europe in 1703. It was during this journey from Constantinople and Trabzon that in September 1704 he contracted the illness he describes in his book, which he based on his own experience, having miraculously survived. - Occasional brownstaining, otherwise fine. He produced architectural views of places around the world intended as vues díoptiques, which were published in various places during the last half of the 18th century, including Paris, Augsburg and London. He was also known for his portraits.Probst came from an extended family of printers, whose businesses can all be traced back to the publishing firm of Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724). After Wolff's death his firm was continued as ìWolffís Heirsî by his son-in-law Johann Balthasar Probst (1689-1750). After Probstís death in 1750, his descendants divided the business and published under their own imprints: Johann Friedrich Probst (1721-1781), Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) and Johann Michael Probst. Another part of the Wolff-Probst firm was acquired by the Augsburg publisher Johann Georg Hertel (1700-1775), whose son Georg Leopold Hertel had married a sister of the Probsts. In the next generation, Georg Math?us Probst (d. 1788), son of Georg Balthasar Probst, also became an engraver of portraits and views.

[Mather, Cotton]
[Boston]: London: Printed in the year 1708. Reprinted, 1721. [4],34 (of 36)pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Titlepage neatly mended in gutter and on outer margin. Final leaf in expert facsimile. Light soiling and wear. Inscribed by Thomas Wallcut at the top of three leaves. Very good. The first American edition of this scarce and important Mather tract, of great importance for the history of Massachusetts. Much of the text is an excoriation by the Mathers of Gov. Joseph Dudley, with whom they had bitterly disagreed and attempted to have removed from office on grounds of poor administration. To prove this, Cotton Mather herein details charges against Dudley going back to 1677, when he first went to Massachusetts. Dudley served in Massachusetts until 1715 and died there in 1720. The text also includes an accounting of Dudley's disastrous foray against Port Royal, Jamaica during Queen Anne's War in 1707. The first edition was printed in London because the Mathers could not have the tract printed in Boston, where the printers feared Dudley's power as governor. It is probably no coincidence that this second edition was published the year following Dudley's death. Unlike the first edition, this printing does not contain the Indian captivity narratives of Mrs. Hannah Bradley, first in 1697 and again in 1703. This work is sometimes ascribed to Alexander Holmes or John Wise. Thomas Wallcut (1758-1840), whose signature appears on three leaves, was a major early American book collector from Boston. He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

FER (Nicolas de).
Paris, Danet, 1721. 621 x 469 mm.

[Click Below for Full Description]

1721. [La ROQUE, Jean de] Viaggio Nell’Arabia Felice . negli anni 1708. 1709. e 1710. Con la relazione . d’un Viaggio . degli anni 1711. 1712. & 1713. Venice, Sebastian Coleti, 12mo.[8]+297+[7]p. With engraved folding map of the Yemen and surrounding countries and 3 folding plates showing the coffee plant engraved by A. Luciano. Original decorative publisher’s wrappers, untrimmed. The first edition in Italian of the findings of two French exploratory voyages to Arabia (1708-1713), published by Jean de la Roque. The second voyage was made exclusively to the Yemen. This influential account, based on letters by Captain de la Merville who led the first expedition, and on reports by other participants, was intended to promote direct trade with the Yemen. La Roque was particularly interested in investigating the possibility of purchasing coffee which the French at that time obtained mostly from the Levant. It was for this reason that he added an extensive monograph on coffee as the second part of his narrative of the voyages with detailed illustrations of the plant, its blossom, fruit and bean, carefully drawn after nature. This treatise is remarkable for providing the first descriptions of the coffee plantations and the coffee trade of Arabia based on reports by three French physicians who took part in the second voyage; De la Grelaudière, who travelled over land from Mocha to cure the Imam of Yemen, and the two ship surgeons de Noiers and Barbier. JOHN SENEX
Tratta da "A new General Atlas of the world".
