Cyril of Jerusalem
Paris - Jacobi Vincent, 1720 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Antoine-Augustin Touttee's posthumously published translation of the works of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. First edition. In Latin and Greek. With bookplate of Samuel Webster Allen, bishop of Shrewsbury between 1897 and 1908, to front pastedown. Copperplate inscription to title page, dated 1723. Cyril of Jerusalem was a distinguished theologian of the early Church (ca. 313 386). He is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. In 1883, Cyril was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII. Little is known of his life before he became a bishop; the assignment of his birth to the year 313 rests on conjecture. St. Cyril was ordained a deacon by Bishop St. Macarius of Jerusalem in about 335 and a priest some eight years later by Bishop St. Maximus. About the end of 350 he succeeded St. Maximus in the See of Jerusalem. Antoine-Augustin Touttee (13 December 1677 - 25 December 1718) was a French Benedictine scholar of the Maurist Congregation. He studied the humanities with the Oratorians at Riom, made vows at the Abbey of Vendome, 29 October 1698, and was ordained priest in December, 1702. He taught philosophy at Vendome from 1702 to 1704 and theology at St-Benoit-sur-Loire from 17041708, and at St-Denis from 1708 to 1712. He then withdrew to St-Germain-des-Pres to prepare this work, which was was issued after his death. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, a trifle worn. Cracking to both joints. Institutional label to front board. Sp … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN DER AA, Pieter (1659-1733)
Leiden, 1720. Copper-engraved map. (Expert restoration along the side margins). Decorative early 18th century map with California as an island. This map was first issued in the German edition of Montanus's De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld in 1671. "The map [i.e. the plate] was later acquired by Pieter Van der Aa and used in at least two of his works ... Van der Aa altered the plate removing the decorative cartouches and applying an entirely new one containing the title top left. There are various territories of the natives identified and one or two minor alterations of nomenclature" (Burden). Cartographically, the map follows the Visscher map of 1658, with California as an island and a large open lake in the place of the western Great Lakes. McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 187; Burden, The Mapping of North America II:430 (state 2).

Broadside
Printed sheet, 8 1/2 x 10 /12 inches. Two traditional sea shanties, the first relating a battle with Barbary pirates, and the second from a 1720 ballad by John Gay originally titled “Sweet William’s Farewell to Black-Ey’d Susan.” This version has been shortened from eight to five stanzas. Printed in two columns, each headed by a fine, crude wood engraving of a ship. Looks English, late 18th or early 19th century, but inscribed on the verso, “James Fuller / Boothbay April 27 / 1825” - so, either an import or an American product. Let’s hope for the latter. Pinholes at old folds. In handsome 19th century frame.

Gage, Thomas
Amsterdam, 1720. Informing the British Crown about the present state of the Spanish settlements in the Caribbean and the Antilles. 1720. Amsterdam. Paul Marret. Two volumes in 8vo (163 mm x 93 mm). 1 [blank] + 14 ff. + 431 + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 6 ff. + 360 + 1 [blank]. Contemporary calf gilt, raised bands to spine, forming compartments heavily tooled, morocco lettering pieces, gently rubbed, a couple of pieces missing on spines, else fine. Light browning and foxing as expected, else a fresh copy, folding plates in very good condition. Fourth edition in French, revised, corrected and enlarged. Gage (c.1597 - 1656) was an English clergyman and traveller; he studied at Valladolid with the Jesuits and later became a Dominican. His travels began at Mexico, where he started a missionary journey that would last for 12 years, getting to know the land and local costumes. In 1640, once back in England, he converted to Anglicanism and was sent to the Antilles by Cromwell in an expedition to assess the state of the Spanish settlements, where he stayed until death found him in Jamaica. Illustrated with two frontispieces and 16 folding plates and maps; the views show local city views and natural history, the maps are of North America, Guadalupe, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Cuba, all giving a comprehensive view of the Caribbean and the plates include folding views of Cartagena, Porto Bello and La Havana. The work harshly criticizes the religious institutions and the Spanish colonization method. Sabin, 26303. Palau, 96486.
