G.B. Piranesi
John Wilton-Ely 311No Watermark is presentThis print is from the series "Le Antichita Romane" "After over eight years of careful study and excavation Piranesi produced this four-volume work which swiftly established his reputation in Europe as the leading protagonist of Roman archaeology. More than other such antiquarian works, the 250 plates of the Antichita played a dominant role in conveying information, and Piranesi was to develop a whole new range of specialized illustarions in order to reveal aspects of antiquity which had hitherto been largely neglected. His aim, as with all his archaeological publications, was two-fold - to record the vanishing past for scholars and to inspire contemporary designers to emilate the achievements of the past." (John Wilton Ely pg 327)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOLL, Hermann (1654-1732)
[London]: Moll, n.d., c. 1720. Copper-engraved map, with period hand- colouring in outline. Inset view of Mexico City, inset maps of the Bay of Porto Bella, Bay of Havana, Cartagena, St. Augustin and Vera Cruz. 25 1/4 x 40 5/8 inches. Moll's Map of the Spanish Main This very intriguing Moll map of the West Indies undoubtedly owes a good deal to his friendship with a number of prominent English privateers, most notably William Dampier and Woodes Rogers. (Moll contributed world maps to works written by both men). The map is full of observations that derive from an intense interest in the various routes of the annual Spanish flotilla that, beginning in the 1520s, conveyed silver, gold, gems, spices, and wood from the New World to Spain. According to Moll's map, the convoy sailed into the Gulf south of Granada to Cartagena where they picked up mostly silver from South America: primarily Potosi until 1626, and Peru. From there they might sail directly to Havana, or to Porto Bello in Darien (Panama) where materials that had been transported across the Pacific from the Philippines would await them. From there to Vera Cruz to collect exports from Mexico and then on to Havana. The whole flotilla, again following Moll's "tracts", sailed northeast from Havana, then north through the Bahama Channel to St. Augustine, then east to Spain. Needless to say, the pirates were located near the latter stages of the procession, many in the Bahamas. As time went on, piratical ventures organized and began to assault wealthy port towns, in addition to the ships anchored in their harbors … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Michael Seligmann
- A very detailed hand colored ornithological engraving by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) from his book "Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Selener Vogel" which was printed in Nuremberg in1749-76. These engravings were after George Edwards and Mark Catesby's earlier prints. Overall this print measures 15 ½” x 10”. Mark Catesby (1682-1749) was born and educated in England, and was originally sent to Carolina by the Royal Society in 1722 as a botanist. From there he traveled to Florida and the Bahamas, returning to England in 1726 with a vast store of information on the wildlife he had observed. By the spring of 1729, he had completed the first part of The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1734-1746), but it was not until 1746 that the work was finally finished. It became the earliest colored book on American birds. George Edwards (1694-1773) was a contemporary of Mark Catesby. He was an ornithologist and bird illustrator who was heavily influenced by Catesby. Edwards is best known as the author of A Natural History, composed of two books: A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743-51) and Gleanings of Natural History (1758-1764). The plates that were contained within these works were valued for their landscape backgrounds, which were unusual at the time. To satisfy the tremendous demand for both these landmark works, Johann Michael Seligmann, a German publisher, issued a nine-volume compilation of the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. Blome, Richard:
London, 1720. Copper engraving, 32 x 19 cms, black and white as issued, blank verso. John Stow's A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster was originally published in 1598 and 1603, but revised and expanded works under his name appeared over the following two centuries. This detailed ward plan was commissioned towards the end of his life by Richard Blome (1635-1705) for a proposed Survey or description of the citties of London and Westm[inste].r (entered in the Registers of the Stationers' Company in 1695) which never materialized. The plates were sold and Blome's name erased after his death and they were included in John Strype's edition of Stow's Survey printed in 1720 (which itself took over a decade to see through the press, despite the backing of a large consortium of booksellers), and in the edition of 1754-55.
