FER, Nicolas de
Paris: Danet, 1720. 2 maps on one sheet. Engraving with original hand outline color. Image measures 18 x 28.5". Sheet measures 21.75 x 30.5". This hard-to-find pair of maps on one sheet offers a fascinating comparison of the Holy Land in ancient and modern times. On the left historical map, the region extended from Damascus south the tip of the Dead Sea is divided into the 12 tribes of Israel, separated by hand-colored borders. The index includes cities, rivers, mountains, and other prominent geological features. The map on the right depicts the same region in modern times--the early 18th century--now divided into provinces under Turkish rule. In addition to labeled features, this map also contains a number of notations, particularly around the Dead Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea, that describe the geography and politics of the region. Decorative title cartouches at the top of each map feature finely detailed scrollwork. In addition, descriptive text in French also runs along the bottom of both maps. The maps were published in de Fer's "Atlas ou recueuil de cartes geographiques." The sheet is in very good condition with wide margins. Scattered stains and a tear in the lower edge affecting only the margin and text panel. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific cartographer, engraver and publisher who took over the family map business from his mother when she retired in 1687. The business flourished and he gained a great reputation in his lifetime and was appointed 'Geographer to the King' in 1690. This map demonstrates his skill and provides a curious yet allu … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAPPER, Olfert
Van der Aa, Pierre, Leiden - A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 %u2013 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example. Map. Copper plate engraving. Image measures 11 1/8 x 14 3/8".

1720. This map of the south part of the Caspian sea covers the Caucasus and Turkmenistan. A fine and strongly engraved view of the city of Baku (the former Tereki) is inset in a decorative cartouche at upper right. Armenia is prominently noted covering the country to Erivan on the North and Lake Van on the South. The Turkish Genocide of the Armenians in 1915 resulted in the deaths of 1.5 millions Armenians of which my Grandmothers family was slaughtered in front of her and she was sent to the desert to die. MOLL, Herman (1654-1732)
London: printed for H. Moll, 1720. Engraved map, period hand-coloring in outline. 24 5/8 x 40 3/8 inches. A fine copy of this important map of Colonial America, reflecting the boundary disputes between Great Britain and France. The outline colouring of the map has been specially applied to reflect the political realities in North America at the time. The 15-line engraved "Advertisement" to the right of the Bahamas offers a key to the colouring and reads, in part: "All within the Blew Colour of this Map, shews what is Claim'd by France under the Names of Louisiana, Mississipi &c. according to a French Map published at Paris with the French King's Privelege. The Yellow Colour what they allow ye English. The Red, Spain. The English Claim the Property of Carolina ... Hence any body ma[y] see, how much they would Incroach &c.". The lengthy engraved text in the panel beneath the title refers Moll's cartographic sources: "A Great Part of this Map is taken from the original Draughts of Mr. [Nathaniel] Blackmore, ... Mr. [Richard] Berisford ... , Capt. [Thomas] Nairn and others". Moll goes on to acknowledge that "the South West Part of Louisiana is done" after Guillaume Delisle's map of 1718 and that he has incorporated "the Division or Bounds according to that Map". The text also touches on the controversy over the various claims to Louisiana Territory and the English claim to Carolina. "Conflict over control of the Ohio Territory and the Mississippi Valley was reflected in a cartographic war between England and France. In 1718, French mapmaker Guillaume Delisle pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Baptist Homann
1720 - We believe this is one the most distinctive of Homann's town plans. The plan is dedicated to the city's founder Peter the Great, whose portrait can be seen in the huge title cartouche, surrounded by allegorical figures representing the arts and sciences he nurtured, including ship-building (which he studied in a shipyard in Deptford), printing & geography. A second map shows the position of the city in the mouth of the River Neva, and a vignette view shows the fortified island 'Crohn Schlot' protecting the city's approaches. Saint Petersburg was founded by the Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703. From 1713 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918, Saint Petersburg was the Imperial capital of Russia. In 1914 the name of the city was changed to Petrograd, in 1924 to Leningrad, and in 1991, back to Saint Petersburg.

[Hennepin, Louis; Henri Tonti; et al]:
Amsterdam: Jean Bernard, 1720.. [2],408pp. plus two folding maps and fourteen plates. Half title. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, spine gilt, also with manuscript lettering. Lower half of half-title renewed. Ownership ink stamp on verso of each plate and on titlepage. Older tape repair to one plate. Three leaves (pp. 18 & 407, and titlepage) with portion cut out, perhaps to remove ink stamp, with loss of some text. About very good. These narratives are accompanied by fourteen plates of Indians, based on John White's illustrations in De Bry, which do not appear in the regular set. Also present is the handsome folding map, a reissue on a smaller scale of Delisle's 1718 CARTE DE LA LOUISIANE ET DU COURS DU MISSISSIPI. The second, smaller map shows the coast of Atlantic Canada and New England. This assemblage usually appears … [Click Below for Full Description]
