London: circa 1720. Engraving with period hand-colouring. Re-backed at centerfold. 1 x 1/2" loss to lower right corner restored. Marginal loss 1 1/4 x 3/8" at base of centerfold restored. Two marginal tears at bottom expertly repaired. Image size: 15 3/4 x 20 3/4 inches. 19 7/8 x 23 7/8 inches. Early English Map of Switzerland A contemporary of Herman Moll, John Senex was one of the most successful mapmakers during the golden age of English cartography. He issued a series of atlases with John Maxwell and C. Price, and went on to reissue Ogilby's road atlas. He was appointed Geographer to Queen Anne, and in 1728 was elected to the Royal Society. His beautiful maps are famed for their meticulous detail and ornate cartouches, and they remain some of the best examples of eighteenth century English mapmaking. In this handsome map of Switzerland, the original 13 Cantons are listed with their dates of incorporation, and around the border of the map are the crests of each canton, as well as those of their allies.

M. Fabii Quinctiliani; Burmannum, Petrum (editor)
Lugduni Batavorum: Joannem de Vivie, 1720. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Quintiliani (Quinctilianus) was a well-known Roman philosopher and orator. He wrote and published his one surviving work, Institutione Oratoria, in twelve books, prior to 96 CE.It describes the life and training of an orator from birth until maturity.Book 1 covers the importance of language as a foundation in early education, including the influence of nurses, parents, and slaves, as well as the superiority of schools over home education. Book 2 discusses the entrance of a boy into rhetoric school, the qualities of a good instructor, and guidelines for students working together. Books 3-7 discuss technicalities of oration in court speeches. Books 8-11 illuminate Quintilian's views on oratory style and delivery. Perhaps most interesting is Book 10, where Quintilian gives his uncensored views of famous Greek and Latin writers. Book 12 sums up the discussion of an ideal orator by elucidating the personal and moral characteristics which make a vir bonus dicendi peritus, 'a good man who knows how to speak' (Quintilian quoting Cato the Elder). Quintilian insisted on eloquence as a moral force, but was most concerned with good content to help shape sensible men.The twelve books are bound here as one volume. Bound in contemporary vellum boards with neatly inked black title to spine. Embossed floral image and rules to both boards. Raised bands to spine. Two inch long split to top of front joint. Soiling to boards and wear to corners, as is common with a book of this age. The front hinge is starting with a sp … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOLL, Herman (1654-1732)
London: H. Moll, T. Bowles, P. Overton, [circa 1720]. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. Repaired center fold. 22 5/8 x 37 3/4 inches. 25 1/2 x 41 inches. Herman's Moll's magnificently detailed map of Africa, one of the finest depictions of the continent made in the eighteenth-century This elegant map of Africa evinces the fact that the continent's coastlines were then very well- known, in great contrast to its heart, referred to as "Ethiopia," a land "wholly unknown to the Europeans." While various European explorers had gone some distance up the Senegal, Niger, Nile and Zambezi rivers, the enigmatic nature of the interior would remain largely intact until the third quarter of the nineteenth-century. As indicated by the detailed toponymy of the west African coast, various European powers maintained an active presence there; a pictorial inset in the lower left of the map depicts "Cape Coast Castle," a major British fortress in modern-day Guinea. The Portuguese controlled trade south of the Congo River on the west coast, and on the eastern coast in the busy trading regions centered on the island of Zanzibar. South Africa was dominated by the Dutch, who founded Cape Town in 1652. A beautiful view of the majestic harbour of the Cape, featuring the unmistakable sight of Table Mountain occupies the lower right of the map. Moll drew on Edmond Halley's revolutionary hydrological chart for his detailed depiction of the ocean currents. This includes the annual periods and direction of the Monsoons in the Indian Ocean that could … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joints slightly split, extremities scuffed. One plate loosely inserted, two with sections of blank margins torn away, some other clean tears occasionally affecting the image area. Else very good. A very rare economics work in which are reprinted a collection of the contemporary satirical texts and prints relating to the financial exploits of John Law and his infamous Mississippi scheme of 1717-20, events connected with the founding of a viable colony in Louisiana. "John Law (bap. 21 April 1671 - 21 March 1729) was a Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself, and that national wealth depended on trade. He is said to be the father of finance, responsible for the adoption or use of paper money or bills in the world today. Law was a gambler and a brilliant mental calculator, and was known to win card games by mentally calculating the odds. Law, John:
Paris. Feb. 12, 1720.. [2]pp. Very minor soiling at right edge. Near fine. A letter to a bureaucrat about reaction to some of John Law's economic policies, signed by Law as Controller General of Finance for France. In the previous few years Law, a Scottish economist and gambler who was once jailed for murder, had crested the world of high finance to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in France. Law bought controlling interest in the Mississippi Company in 1717; later that same year, he floated the Mississippi Company as a joint stock trading company called the Compagnie d'Occident, which was granted a trade monopoly of both the West Indies and North America. Against everyone's advice, including that of Law himself, the Company founded the city of New Orleans in 1718. Things were not to endure, however, for Law. The bank he had set up in 1716, which had helped him gain his current power and control in the French government, began its grand collapse shortly thereafter (commonly referred to as the bursting of the Mississippi Bubble). The bank had been consolidated with the Compagnie d'Occident, under Law's control, and speculation in the trading arm of the endeavor soon overran the bank end of the business. It was, however, extremely successful until it collapsed and caused an economic crisis in France and across Europe. His experiment in France - to issue paper currency backed by investments - was in high gear at the time this document was drafted. Law's financial structure was just beginning to hemorrhage, and its dramatic collapse … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Louisiana]:
Leipzig. 1720.. [6],84pp. plus folding map. Modern antique paneled calf, gilt. Faint stain in upper margin of text, moderate age toning. A very good copy. The rare first edition of HISTORISCHE UND GEOGRAPHISCHE BESCHREIBUNG, designed to further the schemes of John Law and the Mississippi Company, riding the crest of the South Sea Bubble before the crash of that scheme the following year. This is the first of three editions published in 1720, with the later two entitled AUFSFURLICHE BESCHREIBUNG. The present copy does not contain the portrait called for by Sabin and Howes which is present in the copies at Yale, UCLA, and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, but which is not mentioned in EUROPEAN AMERICANA, and the copies at Trinity College and the William Clements Library appear to be complete without it. The map, "Louissana am Fluss Missisippi," provides a slightly fore- shortened cartographic view of the watershed of the Mississippi from around the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. Natchez and other French outposts up the Mississippi are shown, as well as New Orleans and other settlements on the lower river. The Illinois River and the French fort on it in what is now central Illinois are also shown. It is an interesting and significant map. The book is a general collection of material about Louisiana, drawn from Hennepin and from the promotional claims of the Mississippi Company. It paints a rosy picture of the prospects for and future of Louisiana and the venture there. The text concludes with a poem concerning the Mississippi Company. All editions are rare. JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (1632-1712) after Nicolas SANSON (1600-1667)
Paris: Depot de la Marine, circa 1720. Copper-engraved map, later published by the Depot de la Marine. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition, apart from a vertical and a horizontal crease where the chart was folded. Image size: 23 ¼ x 31 7/8 inches. 26 ¾ x 39 ¼ inches. A stunning sea chart of the English Channel from one of the most celebrated French atlases "Le Neptune Francois" With the establishment of the Paris Observatory in 1667, a series of surveys by triangulation were conducted of the coasts of France. The findings were organized into elaborate sea charts and included in one of the greatest atlases of the age, Le Neptune Francois. Le Neptune Francois was first published in 1693 by Nicolas Sanson and Alex Hubert Jaillot in cooperation with J. D. Cassini. This lavish collection of sea charts was one of the most important contributions to the history of European mapmaking and helped establish France as a leader in cartographic study. Following the foundation of the National Hydrographic Service in 1720, also known as the Depot de la Marine, the French continued to dominate this field until well into the eighteenth century. The atlas was initially published in Paris but was quickly re-engraved and republished by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam with accompanying French, Dutch, and English texts. Le Neptune Francois appeared in numerous editions before it was revised and republished by J. N. Bellin in 1753. This stunning chart is a wonderful example from this important atlas. Almost identical to Sanson and Jaillot's original map, this chart is a later publication … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

G.B. Piranesi
Rome, 1720. John Wilton-Ely 480A fleur de lis watermark is present but due to the heavy ink it is impossible to tell exactly which one. From the series "Le Antichita Romane"Piranesi produced this four-volume work which swiftly established his reputation in Europe as the leading protagonist of Roman archaeology. More than other such antiquarian works, the 250 plates of Antichita played a dominant role in conveying information, and Piranesi was to develop a whole new range of specialized illustrations in order to reveal aspects of antiquity which hitherto been largely neglected." (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiq … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Strype (1643–1737), historian and biographer, was approached by the publishers Richard Chiswell and Thomas Horne to provide yet another revised version of John Stow's much admired Survey of London (1598). An agreement was drawn up whereby Strype would receive 43 guineas, his expenses, and six bound copies of the finished work. The Survey had been repeatedly revised and enlarged in order to keep up with the changing aspect of the post-fire city, now much expanded and altered in its religion and other ways. Strype immediately set about transcribing documents from the London archives and in 1703 Awnsham Churchill joined the agreement as senior partner, and Strype's payment was increased to £103.
