CLARKE, John
- First edition of the first of two sets of Boyle Lectures given by John Clarke (1682-1757), brother of Samuel Clarke and father of John Clarke, Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, with whom he has often been confused. This John Clarke for the last thirty years of his life was Dean of Salisbury. 'Clarke was an accomplished mathematician, who was the author of A Demonstration of the Principal Sections of Sir Isaac Newton's Principles of Natural Philosophy (1720) as well as revising Humphrey Ditton's work on fluxions (1726) and translating into English his brother’s Latin translation of Rohault's physics. As a philosopher his importance depends on two sets of Boyle Lectures given in 1719 and 1720, on moral evil and natural evil respectively. These lectures are an exposition of Newtonian natural philosophy which attempt to combine both a priori and a posteriori arguments. The former are deployed to show that God has certain perfections, infinite wisdom, goodness and so on, and also to show that concepts such as Space and Time are necessary. Knowing as we do God's intentions and capacities ‘we know that a Being infinitely wise, all powerful and Good, cannot be the Author of any Thing, but what is worthy of those perfections to Create' (Enquiry into Evil, p. 67). Our knowledge of what can be known a posteriori, of which Newtonian science is the paradigm, is limited and falsifiable (Enquiry into Natural Evil, p. 79). Thus in explaining nature we do not know causes as such but only perceive the effects of particular kinds of motion. In this respect Clarke antici … [Click Below for Full Description]

Du Guay-Trouin, Rene, Lieut. General
1720. Manuscript journal of the most famous French Pirate of all times, with the account of the taking of Rio de Janeiro. N.d. [ca. 1720-25]. In 4to (207 mm x 160 mm; binding 216 mm x 172 mm). 2 ff. [blank] + 1 ff. [title] + 1-99 + 1 ff. [unnumbered, but continuing text] + 100-119 [i.e. 120 ff. with the unnumbered ff.] + 1 ff. + 2 [blank]. Contemporary calf, raised bands to spine with morocco lettering piece, gilt. Manuscript in brown ink with readable penship, all by the same hand except for the last 4 pages, in a more delicate calligraphy and different ink; overall browned and with some oxidation by the ink.Exceedingly rare manuscript of Du Guay Trouin's Memoires, the famous French corsair; amongst the most appealing privateering narratives of all times and the basis to the best seller of maritime literature of the 18th century. The memoires of the Saint-Malo corsair were published for the first time in 1730 in a "pirate" edition, followed by Mortier's beautifully printed version.Du Guay (1673 - 1736), active during the last years of the 17th and beginnings of the 18th century, was one of the most famous French privateers and naval officers of his time; during his short though highly profitable life, Du Guay engaged English, Dutch and Portuguese fleets. Arguably, his most celebrated accomplishment was the defeat of the Brazilian fleet at Lisbon and the capture of Rio de Janeiro in 1711; a decade later, around 1720-1721, the first redaction of his memoires was possibly begun. Its intention was to establish the truth about the naval events occurred during his expeditions, s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grafen Schönborn, Wappen-Supralibros, Diplomatik, Numismatik - Ludewig, J. P. Von:
Frankfurt u. Leipzig, später Halle, Waisenhaus, 1720-, 1733.. circa 18,5 x 12,5 cm.

NEWTON, [Isaac]
Finely printed with decorative woodcut headpiece, initials, and engraved chapter vignettes depicting author?s optical experiments (white on black background - - see sketch of vignette in Guerlac, pp. 158 and on dust jacket of his book). With 12 folding engraved plates. Full vellum; faint water stains on the blank fore - edge of a few leaves. Bookplate of Arnold Thackray as well as a very interesting contemporary wax armorial stamp used as a bookplate. An especially nice, crisp copy, important for its illustrations and typographical execution. This second French edition is greatly superior to the first Amsterdam edition of 1720 (which was published in 12mo.) not only textually but for its beauty. According to Guerlac, it is the handsomest edition of the Opticks printed in Newton?s lifetime, or indeed later. This edition, quite rare, was edited by Pierre Varignon, and included changes proposed by de Moivre and authorized by Newton.

[TIERRAS AUSTRALES] CALLOT, Jacques
[Germany]: circa, 1720. Engraving, 280 x 180 mm., printed from two plates; fine, mounted and framed. Governor General of the unknown southland. Fine portrait of the man with the claim to be the earliest holder, real or imaginary, of the sometimes troubled office of the Governor-General of Australia. Don Miguel Zorrero Tuerto, in this caricature in the style of Jacques Callot, is claimed as the grandfather of Don Quixote and the governor of "Tierras Australes desconocidas".This rare engraving is from the series "Il Calloto resuscitato oder Neu eingerichtes-Zwerchen Cabinet", published in Germany at the beginning of the eighteenth-century. The work was the most visible of a widespread series of copies of the grotesques published by Callot in the 1600s, which had spawned imitations in media as diverse as porcelain tiles and marzipan cakes. The connection to Callot here is putative and, as Wilhelm Fraenger has pointed out, if it were not for the use of his name in the title no connection would be apparent (Callots Neueingerichtetes Zwergenkabinett, Zurich, 1922).
