Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1663 - 1724)
Taken from the "Atlas Novus Terrarum" published in Nurenberg in 1720. Norimberga Nurnberg L. Dufour - A. PICCOLI GREGORIO
Scolari, 1720. Incisione in rame, mm 707x450. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1663 - 1724)
Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Fascinating plate showing the planetary motions according to Copernicus and Kepler, who both shared heliocentric theories of the solar system. Unlike Copernicus, who believed that the planets had circular orbits, Kepler theorized that the planets had elliptical orbits. Kepler also theorized that there was a strong relationship between geometry and cosmology. Notes surrounding the diagrams explain Kepler's theories, as well as those of Ismael Bullialdus, Seth Ward, and Nicolaus Mercator. Copper engraving, contemporary colors, in good condition. Mencel, Franz Wilhelm (resp.) / Honert, Taco Hajo van den (praes.).
Leiden, Janssonius van der Aa, 1720. 4to. 32 pp. With a woodcut title vignette, headpieces and initials. Papered spine. Edges sprinkled in red. First edition. - Very rare anatomical dissertation on female breasts, constituting one of the first monographs on the subject. F. W. Mencel (1697-1773) had not only studied medicine, but also mathematics and physics; he would later serve as physician in his native Magdeburg as well as draw maps and architectural elevations in Prussia before going on to teach medicine in Halle and Zerbst (cf. Jöcher/A.). - In his introduction, the author states that humans at various ages favour different foods, but only at the youngest age can they draw nutrition from the human body alone, "for which purpose the female sex has been given two peculiar organs, which rise as prominences from the chests of young women and have been referred to by anatomists under the name of 'mammae', 'breasts', providing nourishment, called 'milk', to the tenderest of beings. These organs (as such) have not been hitherto dealt with frequently," for which reason he has chosen them as the subject of his thesis. Mencel elaborates on the classical derivation of the term 'mamma' before giving a description of the mammary glands, their different appearance in males and females, and their locale on the body. The author notes that there are usually two such glands, one right, the other opposite, on the left. The reason for this, says Mencel, is both functional and aesthetic: "for one thing, it is prettier that way, and for another, if one of them is injured or cannot produce s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard van KEULEN (1678 - 1727)
Incisione in rame, bellissima coloritura coeva. Molto rara. Beautiful and rare nautical chart of Sicily taken from "De Nieuwe Groote Zee - Atlas veermerdeen ..." nautical atlas, published in Amsterdam in about 1718. Son of the cartographer Johannes van Keulen, Gerard was an engraver and mathematician, cartographer and hydrographer of the East India Company. Oversaw the reissue of his father's works with some corrections and additions. Uncertain is the date of publication of his atlas, which, however, consists of at least 34 editions between 1680 and 1734. This map of Sicily was certainly engraved after 1718, because it represented the battle of Capo Passero between … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Saint Domingue]
[N.p., 1720. Manuscript map, 19 1/2 x 26 inches. Original hand-coloring. Old folds. Early repairs on verso along folds, slight loss at lower corners repaired. Light staining. Good plus. A handsome handcolored map of the island of Saint Domingue, probably executed in the early 18th century. The map is labeled in French, showing the French and Spanish halves of the island, with Turks and Caicos to the north and with an inset of the Isle a Vache, located just off the southeastern peninsula. The Spanish half of the island is very sparsely labeled, unlike the French half which abounds with place names. Watercolor wash has been used to enumerate the topography, showing major hills and rivers, as well as delineation of towns and cities. This map closely resembles a manuscript map of the western half of the island, dated 1715, held by the Bibliothque Nationale de France.

(AUCTION CATALOGUE: HOHENDORF, G.W.).
1 p.l., 240 pp.; 1 p.l., 200 pp.; 1 p.l., 288 pp. Three vols. in one. 8vo, orig. paste-paper wrappers (spine worn, upper wrapper nearly detached), uncut. The Hague: A. de Hondt, 1720. The rare sale catalogue of the famous library of Georg Wilhelm, Freiherr von Hohendorf (d. 1719), Austrian general, Adjutant-General of Prince Eugene of Savoy, and his rival as a book collector. Hohendorf's library contained a splendid series of early printed books, 16 Grolier bindings, a very complete collection of books from the Aldine Press, and a rich collection of MSS. "Although this library of 6787 printed books and 252 manuscripts does not rank with the largest collections of the eighteenth century, the choice of books and the organization of the catalogue make it important."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 246. Hohendorf's catalogue is the first to segregate Aldine imprints into a category of their own. The auction did not take place as the collection was purchased en bloc by the Vienna Hofbibliothek before the sale for 60,000 guilders where it remains one of its chief glories. Very good copy of a decidedly scarce book, preserved in a box. Minor browning (much less than usual). ❧ Folter 366. Pollard & Ehrman, p. 221 & no. 240. .

Homann, Johann Baptiste
Nuremberg, Germany: Io. Bat. Homanno, 1720. Map. Very Good. Double-page engraved map is approximately 19.5" x 23.5" (50 x 59.5 cm). Hand-colored. Title cartouche in the upper left corner shows the missionary explorer, Father Hennepin, with allegorical New World figures, a buffalo head, and a classic image of Niagara Falls. A vignette in the lower right corner shows a slightly inaccurate illustration of an American bison flanked by Native Americans. Text is in both French and Latin. Although Homann's very attractive map of the Louisiana Province (often referred to as the "Buffalo Map") was only issued in one edition (first in 1720), it was included in a number of atlases until the mid-1760s making specific maps almost impossible to accurately date. It is based upon Guillaume de l'Isle's map of 1718 and, like de l'Isle's map, was politically controversial. The labeling of vast territory west of the Appalachian Mountains as French "La Louisiane" angered Great Britain and especially Spain, and his depiction of an exceptionally large "Florida" was contested as well. Routes of early explorers are shown and labeled as are Native American tribes and pueblos, Catholic missions, fortifications, portages, and early settlements. Southern Florida is shown as an archipelago and labeled "Antropophages" (cannibals). Overall, this is a very attractive example of an important map.
