(SOUTH SEA BUBBLE.)
London: For Thomas Boys, 17201825. London: For Thomas Boys,, 17201825. Duodecimo. Uncut in the original brown paper-covered boards printed in black, early manuscript title to spine over absent label, printed vignette to front cover. Engraved frontispiece and vignette title page. 19th-century bookplate of James Whatman to front pastedown. Spine worn at head with loss to paper covering, front free endpaper excised, light foxing to initial and final leaves. A very good, unsophisticated copy of this fragile volume. Second edition, expanded from the first of the same year with an additional 37 pages of appendices. Its publication coinciding with the repeal of the 1720 Bubble Act, the book gives a history of the spectacular rise and crash of South Sea stock, and reprints eight contemporary satirical verses, alongside an 1825 London Magazine article entitled "Bubbles", and legal opinions on the matter. The anonymous author draws parallels between the financial speculation of their own time and the crash of the century before, and gives a lengthy list of the various companies which they feel are modern day bubbles - it is clear why they chose to remain anonymous. Of note is their inclusion of several railway companies, which would indeed see over-speculation and crashes over the next few decades. Both the first and second editions are uncommon in commerce, but especially so in the original boards.

MEDICINE - RECIPES].
A recipe book in Dutch probably written beginning around 1720 but with additions to at least 1758. Most of the recipes are medicinal, but about 15 written pages near the end, separated from the others by numerous blanks, contain culinary recipes. Among the medicinal recipes one also finds a few for ink, shoe polish and other things. The medicinal recipes include treatments for the plague, rabid dog bites, jaundice, worms, warts, scurvy, toothache, headache and many other ailments. Unusually, the complier cites about a dozen sources for the medicinal recipes. The culinary recipes include several kinds of pancakes, waffels and "poffertjes" (a popular Dutch treat like tiny puffy pancakes), tarts, cookies and other sweet treats.A small number of leaves had been used for something else before the present text, but they were removed and the rest recased in the original binding to begin the present manuscript. The only remaining clue to this earlier text is in the index leaves at the end, where a small number entries at the heads of the pages are written in a different hand and in Latin, with references to leaf numbers that are no longer present. They are clearly religious/theological.The manuscript as it now stands has minor marginal defects at the foot of about 40 leaves (not affecting the text) and occasional minor spots, but is still in good condition. The binding is slightly loose (due to the removed leaves) and the parchment shows a few wrinkles and small spots, but the tooling of the centrepiece is clear. A charming manuscript recipe book in Dutch, both medicinal and culina … [Click Below for Full Description]

(LIBERTINE VERSE).
[France, c, 1720. Manuscript on paper, thick 4to (240 × 180 mm), pp. 634, [22] (blank), [4] (table), calligraphic title page with armorial device. Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt panelled spine. Worn, with slight loss to head and foot of spine, but entirely sound. A large manuscript collection of erotic or 'galant' verses and satires. Probably collected in the first half of the eighteenth century, it includes works by, or associated with, Voltaire, Rousseau, Piron, Grécourt and others, with a large number of overtly erotic verses found also in the notorious printed collection Receuil de pièces choisies rassemblées par les soins du Cosmopolite (1735), a very rare work attributed to Anne-Charlotte de Crusol-Florensac, friend of Voltaire and Mirabeau. According to Gay, Pia and Dutel, that work was printed privately by Anne-Charlotte's husband, the duke de Aiguillon in an edition of 12 or fewer copies. Our manuscript is likely to be a parallel collection of libertine verse rather than a copy, since many of these texts circulated primarily in manuscripts and rarely made it into print. A sampling of our verses suggests that some may never have been printed and exist only in comparable manuscripts. Our collection contains over 150 distinct texts, of which over thirty are prose stories and the others being epigrams, songs, sonnets, madrigals, odes and eclogues, running to well over 40,000 words in all. In an inserted 12-page note, a mid-twentieth-century French scholar has identified and attributed many of the texts and transcribed their incipits, demonstrating the significant co … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOLL, Herman
1720. Map. Engraving with original outline coloring. Unusual business route map describing the trade routes of the British South Seas Company. The firm was granted a monopoly to trade in Spain's South American colonies during the War of Spanish Succession. Speculation in the company's stock led to the South Sea Bubble in 1720. Resembling a broadside, the map includes twelve inset maps, trade winds, calm and tornado notes and many port sounding details. Repairs to margins and lined. Otherwise good condition. Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) settled in London in the 1670's where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt. By the turn of the century, Moll became the foremost map publisher in England, where he produced Atlases and maps. As an engraver, cartographer, mapseller and globemaker he appealed to the public with his unusual views and vignettes. As the demand for his work was sustained, he issued many revised editions of his work.

1720. "Bella mappa della regione di Londra con sotto una veduta panoramica della città, tratta dal ""Atlas..."" edito dagli eredi della tipografia Homann. Incisione in rame, bella coloritura coeva con ritocchi, in buone condizioni." Extending north as far as Luton and south to Leatherhead this map encompasses much of modern London. Many of today's inner-city boroughs are outlying hamlets and villages on the eighteenth-century map. Occupying the lower quarter of the plate is a magnificent view of London and Westminster from Southwark, showing the tight curve of the Thames with identifiable buildings beyond. Homann's map of the London Environs is based on that produced in London by Thomas Bowles and he is credited in the title banner (with information in both Latin and German).
