[LA FAYE, Jean Baptiste de].
Barbier IV, col. 1095; Gay 484. First edition of an account of a voyage of three Trinitarian Fathers, François Comelin, Joseph Bernard and Philemon de la Motte, to Algiers and Tunis, initiated to free Christians enslaved by the Muslim rulers of North Africa. It describes the people they meet in Algiers, the progress of their negotiations with ambassadors, and the manners and customs of the Moors living in North Africa, and their journey to Tunis and back to France. Also included are more general descriptions of the cities and their ports. According to Barbier, the account was written by Jean-Baptiste de la Faye. The second part, La tradition de l'eglise, includes a list with the names of more than 400 Christian slaves, noting their age and years in captivity and describing their return home. Also given are Biblical texts related to slaves, captives and prisoners, to illustrate the proper Christian attitude towards slavery. With two owner's inscriptions in ink on title-page. Some occasional minor foxing or spotting, page 11-12 torn with minor text loss. Binding somewhat rubbed along the extremities, top of spine damaged. Overall in good condition.

[HASSHU^ GAFU]
1720. Good. [HASSHU GAFU]. BAICHIKU RANGIKU [SHIFU]. 28.1 x 19.4 cm. One volume [THE ALBUM OF PLUM, BAMBOO, RAN AND CHRYSANTHEMUM] only of eight volumes originally published in Ming-era China. The Ming edition is unobtainable and the first Japanese edition of 1672 virtually so. This is almost certainly one of the volumes of the 1710 Kyoto edition, printed by Nakagawa Mohei. HASSHU GAFU literally translates as A COLLECTION OF EIGHT ILLUSTRATED SKETCH BOOKS. The books in the collection had no intrinsic connection with each other, save that they were heavily illustrated in woodcut. Some, like this one, are done on a botanical theme, others are illustrated poetry collections. In any event, the HASSHU GAFU had a great deal of influence on the Chinese style painters of the early Edo period once it was published there, an influence that only started to fade upon the import of the color printed MUSTARD SEED GARDEN and TEN BAMBOO HALL. This copy has the original dark blue green covers, printed on a thin hard toshi paper, string-bound fukuro-toji Japanese-style with the original printed paper title label. Overall good condition, good impressions.

Nov. 23. 1821.
Atlas van Stolk 3019; E. Ingals, Whaling prints in the F.B. Lothrop collection 15-30; Muller, Historieplaten supplement 3013 C (no copy seen). Extremely rare first edition of two print series with engraved general title: Groote vissery . One series presents the herring fishery and trade, and the other is a classic set of 16 whaling prints by Adolf van der Laan. "The exceptional comprehensiveness, historical accuracy, maritime detail, and artistry are rare in the history of the pictorial documentation of the industry..." (Ingals, p. 9). These 16 scenes show the different stages of whale fishery: the search for a whale, the attempt to catch it, butchering it, hunting polar bears, ships getting caught in ice, etc. "The set's popularity must have been somewhat exceptional, for it appears in innumerable variations, copies, and extractions" (Ingals, p. 9). It is believed that Sieuwert van der Meulen made the original drawings for the set around 1720, just after the Dutch entered Davis Strait, opening vast new whaling grounds and bringing new vitality, prosperity and interest to the industry. The first series (Herring fishery) with text in Dutch and English. The second series (Whaling) with text in Dutch, English and German. With a couple minor smudges in the margins, otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Wrappers rubbed along the extremities.

Manuscript document. 4to. 76pp. N.p., 1720. Together with another medical ms. in the same hand (Brevis chirurgiae exegesis. Astruc, who later joined the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, was a highly skilled and influential teacher. During the 18th century it was common practice for medical lectures such as these to be transcribed and for a small number of manuscript copies to be sold to students who might not have been able to attend. Astruc was: "extremely methodical and clear in his instruction. In a series of courses lasting six years he [covered all phases of medicine: anatomy, physiology, psychology, gerontology, pathology, therapy, venereology, gynecology, neurology and pediatrics. Even in American libraries there are manuscript copies of these carefully prepared and highly appreciated courses; during Astruc's lifetime some of them were used for editions printed without his knowledge in England, Switzerland and Holland" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). An unauthorized edition of Astruc's lectures on fevers was published in England in 1749 under the title A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Most pages are remarkably bright and supple. Volume 1 has one textual engraving, of the Temple of Israel, as well as three torn but extant folding maps, with the remnants of another four folding illustrations or maps which have been torn out. (Few of the library holdings of this set have any of the fold-out maps extant.) In all other respects, a very good, complete set - clean and unmarked, with a splendid shelf appearance. International and Priority Orders please note that this set requires additional postage - contact us for an exact shipping amount. ~KKK~ Hump … [Click Below for Full Description]
