Empire of Japan - Reinier and Josua Ottens, after 1720
1720. 'Imperium Japonicum'' ['The Empire of Japan, here on a Japanese map with sixty six regions, described by Adriaan Reland.'] Copper engraving made by Balthasar Ruyter, published after 1720 in Amsterdam by Reinier and Josua Ottens. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 49 x 60 cm. Adriaan Reland (1676-1718) was a professor at the University of Utrecht. Reland used Japanese maps, most notably a map by Ishakawa Ryusen from the library or Benjamin Dutry (1668-1751), a former director of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the text under the map Reland writes that Japanse woodblock-printed maps are less accurate: 'they draw the outlines of the coast lines with a coarser pen, because they lack the European tools'. Reland emphasises that he only used Japanese maps for place-name accuracy. The map was originally published in a smaller size in Utrecht. The copper plate of this third state in folio format however, was bought by Amsterdam publisher Joachim Ottens in 1720, whose sons Reinier and Josua published it in their atlases thereafter. Reland's map of Japan was the first map to use Sino-Japanese characters [Kanji] on a European printed map and represents a radical departure from prior European maps of Japan. The map is dedicated to Jean-Paul Bignon, librarian to King Louis XIV of France who had ordered it to be made. Bignon's coat of arms is prominently depicted. The inset map at the bottom right shows (the bay of) Nagasaki, 'with the island where the Dutch settled'. Dejima island became a factory for the Dutch East India Company in 1641 and was the only place of contact betwee … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard van KEULEN (1678 - 1726)
Incisione in rame, bellissima coloritura coeva. Molto rara. "Beautiful and rare nautical chart of Sicily taken from ""De Nieuwe Groote Zee-Atlas veermerdeen ..."" nautical atlas, published in Amsterdam in about 1718. Son of the cartographer Johannes van Keulen, Gerard was an engraver and mathematician, cartographer and hydrographer of the East India Company. Oversaw the reissue of his father's works with some corrections and additions. Uncertain is the date of publication of his atlas, which, however, consists of at least 34 editions between 1680 and 1734. This map of Sicily was certainly engraved after 1718, because it represented the battle of Capo Passer … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LA FAYE, Jean Baptiste de].
Barbier IV, col. 1095; Gay 484. First edition of an account of a voyage of three Trinitarian Fathers, François Comelin, Joseph Bernard and Philemon de la Motte, to Algiers and Tunis, initiated to free Christians enslaved by the Muslim rulers of North Africa. It describes the people they meet in Algiers, the progress of their negotiations with ambassadors, and the manners and customs of the Moors living in North Africa, and their journey to Tunis and back to France. Also included are more general descriptions of the cities and their ports. According to Barbier, the account was written by Jean-Baptiste de la Faye. The second part, La tradition de l'eglise, includes a list with the names of more than 400 Christian slaves, noting their ages and years in captivity and describing their return home. It also quotes Biblical texts related to slaves, captives and prisoners, to illustrate the proper Christian attitude towards slavery. With two owner's inscriptions in ink on title-page. Some occasional minor foxing or spotting, pages 11-12 torn with minor text loss. Binding somewhat rubbed along the extremities, head of spine damaged. Overall in good condition.

HOMANN Johann Baptist
- Nuremberg s.d. [MEDICINE - RECIPES].
A recipe book in Dutch probably written beginning around 1720 but with additions to at least 1758. Most of the recipes are medicinal, but about 15 written pages near the end, separated from the others by numerous blanks, contain culinary recipes. Among the medicinal recipes one also finds a few for ink, shoe polish and other things. The medicinal recipes include treatments for the plague, rabid dog bites, jaundice, worms, warts, scurvy, toothache, headache and many other ailments. Unusually, the complier cites about a dozen sources for the medicinal recipes. The culinary recipes include several kinds of pancakes, waffels and "poffertjes" (a popular Dutch treat like tiny puffy pancakes), tarts, cookies and other sweet treats.A small number of leaves had been used for something else before the present text, but they were removed and the rest recased in the original binding to begin the present manuscript. The only remaining clue to this earlier text is in the index leaves at the end, where a small number entries at the heads of the pages are written in a different hand and in Latin, with references to leaf numbers that are no longer present. They are clearly religious/theological.The manuscript as it now stands has minor marginal defects at the foot of about 40 leaves (not affecting the text) and occasional minor spots, but is still in good condition. The binding is slightly loose (due to the removed leaves) and the parchment shows a few wrinkles and small spots, but the tooling of the centrepiece is clear. A charming manuscript recipe book in Dutch, both medicinal and culina … [Click Below for Full Description]

Japan - Seutter, 1720-1740
1720. "Regni Japoniae Nova Mappa Geographica, ex indigenarum observationibus delineata ab Engelberto Kaempfero" Decorative map of Japan published by Matthaeus Seutter in Augsburg around 1720-30. The map was engraved by Tobias Conrad Lotter, after the geographical sketches of the travel by Engelbert Kaempfer to Japan. In the upper left corner there is a large figurative and allegoric title cartouche, with scenes relating to the exploration of Japan. The bottom of the map is ornated with Japanese arms relating to the kingdom of Japan. Copper engraving, coloured by a later hand. Plate size approx. 49 x 56,7 cm. Seutter, an 18th-century cartographer, was born in Augsburg (Germany) in 1678. In 1697 he became an apprentice to the cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann. By 1707 he returned to Augsburg where he established his own business and produced maps (about 500), atlases (since 1728/30) and globes. Seutter's maps are quite similar to Homann's, and were famous for their details, colour, and decorative cartouches. After dedicating his large atlas to Karl VI, Seutter was awarded the title of "Kaiserlicher Geograph". One of his daughters, Euphrosine married the cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter from Augsburg who, after the death of Seutter's son, Albrecht Carl, became the successor to Seutter and a famous mapmaker on his own. Collection of satirical plates and illustrated poems related to Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid, a famous collection of texts and plates satirizing the Englishman John Law, his Mississippi Company, and the international land and trading speculation in worthless shares, known as the South Sea Bubble of 1719-1720, which resulted in an international scandal. Nearly every copy or set has a different makeup. The present set of plates doesn't include the text, but does include a set of 10 very rare broadsheets with satirical poems and woodcut illustrations, according to Muller "the woodcuts especially are very rare, for some I have seen no other copy than the one described here". Other rare items in the collection are the 2 copies of a, non-satirical, engraved map of the coast of South America and the South Sea, in two parts with the titles "De Zuyd-zee" and "De Pacifische of Zuyd zee", not listed by Muller, and a series of 8 engraved prints, with letterpress text, by Jan de Ridder. Many items, including the rare broadsheets, untrimmed, with most deckles intact. Some items slightly worn, especially among the loose prints, but the others in very good condition, only occasionally restored at the folds.

DANREITER (DANREITTER), Franz Anton.
Beitmann, Geschichte der Gartenkunst IX, pp. 417-425; Berlin Kat. 3333; Springer, p. 37; not in De Ganay; Dochnahl; Weinreb. First and only edition of an important, wholly engraved model book for German rococo gardens. Several of the plans are likely based on real gardens, for example the plan of the garden of Schloss Klesheim at the end of the 1720s.In 1728 Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760) was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. He translated Dezallier's La theorie et la pratique du jardinage into German, helping introduce French garden design to German-speaking countries. Danreiter served five successive bishops in Salzburg. Between 1727 and 1735 he also engraved a number of large-scale views of the city which represent a unique documentation of Salzburg in its 18th century baroque glory. The title-page with a reinforced horizontal fold and some smudges, and a few leaves with minor thumbing and foxing; the plates in very good condition. Marbled sides of the binding discoloured and with stains near the outer edges, but still firm and good.
