Scrive Babson N° 139 riguardo a questa traduzione francese: "Coste, the translator, spent many years in England, where he fled on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and where he became intimate with Locke. His translations were of durable service and helped to introduce english thought to the French of the XVIIIth century". [Click Below for Full Description]

DE MOIVRE, Abraham (1667-1754)
[England. Circa 1720]. Single sheet, folded, tipped onto a later border, light stain to left border. Small quarto (196 mm x 145). 4 text pages with inset diagrams. This manuscript is unsigned and examples of De Moivre autograph manuscripts are scarce in library collections. However, he has a very distinctive hand and this manuscript closely resembles EL/M3/52 in the Royal Society Collection. Provenance: Pencil note: "This autograph is from the Macrone & Dawson Turner Collection." The importance of Abraham De Moivre's mathematical discoveries cannot be overstated. His work with complex numbers, trigonometry, and probability are so crucial that they remain central to the modern understanding of these branches of mathematics. Despite this he was curiously unsuccessful in his lifetime, having to eke out an existence as a tutor and gambling advisor. As a French protestant living in England, he was never given appointment to a university chair and remained poor his entire life, a fact more surprising given his appointment to the Royal Society and close friendships with men of such high standing as Edmund Halley and Isaac Newton. 'De Moivre's Theorem', one of only two of the many discoveries he made to bear his name, was one of the first applications of complex numbers to trigonometry. It allows complex numbers to be represented trigonometrically (and so relates to Euler's formula which later provided a straightforward proof of De Moivre's theorem) and thus is an important tool for analytic geometry (the branch of geometry that deals with coordinate systems rather than constructio … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAW, John.
Paris: 14 January 1720. Single folio sheet (317 x 207 mm). Sometime folded, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. Docketed in the upper left hand corner. Lightly spotted, a few small marginal chips; in very good condition. A fine example of the famous speculator John Law's signature, appended to an autograph letter, written in a neat cursive secretarial hand, to an unknown "Monsieur", thanking him for his complimentary letter following Law's appointment to the post of controller-general of finance of France. On 5 January 1720, John Law was appointed controller-general of the finances of France and "in April received the more prestigious title of superintendent (surintendant des finances, a title not used since 1661 and never again to be used in France). In the course of April and May 1720 he was effectively chief minister and minister of finance, a sort of latter-day Cardinal Mazarin and Nicolas Fouquet combined; but on 27 May, the first crisis of his 'financial system', he was temporarily dismissed from office and threatened with imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris. Yet the eclipse was only brief: he returned to office on 2 June with the additional responsibilities of the superintendence of French commerce, the director-generalship of the Banque Royale, and a councillorship … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILKIE, John.
Edinburgh: Printed by Mr. James M'Euen and Company, and are to be sold at his Shop on the North-Side of the Street a little below the Cross, 1720. 12mo, pp. [1-2] 3-35 [1] blank; outer leaves soiled, small wormhole running through all leaves without loss; soiled disbound; inscribed on title 'John Lee.' John Lee, (1779-1859), Church of Scotland minister, university principal, and bibliomaniac. A rare example of a Sermon directed to a congregation that included two women accused of witchcraft. 'The first part of the sermon is a sound enough exhortation to lead a moral and religious life. But in the second part there is an address to the two persons who had confessed that they were "guilty of this Wickedness," namely of having "taken on with the Devil, to serve and obey him," which shows what a real belief the minister and his audience and the accused must have had in the reality of it. The belief was evidently so sincere that, while one may wonder at the delusion and be appalled by the consequences of it, one may respect the earnestness of the man's endeavours to do his best for all concerned' (Ferguson). The sermon recalls the fictional representation of such events as described in John Buchan's Witchwood and James Hogg's The Brownie of Bodsbeck and The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Wilkie's Sermon reveals the undercurrent of such popular belief then existing amongst Calvinists in Scotland and still prevalent at the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth centuries. Indeed, although in the Torphichen case the so called witches were rep … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT-SIMON, Maximilien Henri, Marquis de].
First and only edition of "the most important monograph devoted to the hyacinth" (Krelage) by the Frenchman Maximilien Henri, Marquis de Saint-Simon (1720-1799), who, although an amateur, had a surprisingly scientific approach. Here printed on heavy and large paper and with the plates printed on folding leaves, enabling the reader to view the plates while consulting the text at the same time. The existence of large paper copies seems to go unnoticed in the literature. The work includes a comprehensive list with "over two thousand named varieties, double and single, including those grown by George Voorhelm ... It appears to be the most important list for the century'' (Hunt). With the engraved armorial bookplate of the French historian Édouard de Laplane (1774-1870). Without the occasionally included preliminary "discours", presenting the work to the Berlin Academy of Science. Some stains to the opening flyleaves and occasionally along the extremities throughout, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly worn and with some restorations to the spine, otherwise good.Hunt 602; Krelage, pp. 612-615; Nissen, BBI 1718; STCN (7 copies, incl. 5 without the preliminary discours).

[Click Below for Full Description]
