Fine dark impression of Johann Baptiste Homann's decorative map of Scotland, with 2 large format cartouches, coats of arms and other decorations. Eredi Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1730 - 1813)
Extending north as far as Luton and south to Leatherhead this map encompasses much of modern London. Many of today's inner-city boroughs are outlying hamlets and villages on the eighteenth-century map. Occupying the lower quarter of the plate is a magnificent view of London and Westminster from Southwark, showing the tight curve of the Thames with identifiable buildings beyond. Homann's map of the London Environs is based on that produced in London by Thomas Bowles and he is credited in the title banner (with information in both Latin and German). Printed on thick paper (typical of the Nuremberg mapmakers) and with original colour, this is an extremely interesting London map.

Jacques AYROUARD (Attivo tra il 1730 e il 1750)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Maritime Amsterdam - Leon Schenk after Adolf van der Laan, c. 1720
Zie cat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Published by Pieter Van der Aa, was also parte of the Dapper's travel. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example.

Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
Rare map, edited by Tipografia del Seminario, showing central Italy in Roman times, based upon the work of Tito Livio. Large allegorical cartouche. Copper engraving, in very good conditions.

Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1663 - 1724)
Decorative full color example of this decorative map, which is based upon De L'Isle's landmark map of Mexico and Florida, first issued in 1703. The map introduces the information from La Salle, Bienville, d'Iberville and other French explorers in America. It was the first map to accurately portray the mouth of the Mississippi and the Great Lakes region. Also accurately shown for the first time are the English settlements on the east coast. The reports of Iberville are present in the villages in the Lower Mississippi Valley and Texas, where the Spanish were active building missions and presidios. Several Dutch and German cartographers copied De L'Isle's work, but added the rich embellishments present in this map. The tracks of the Spanish Galleons and routes to Havana are shown.

Paul DECKER "il vecchio"
Mississippi Bubble, the Mad-head Island - anonymous, 1720
1720. 'Afbeeldinge van't zeer vermearde Eiland Geks-Kop'', [Representation of the very famous island of Mad-head, lying in the sea of shares, discovered by Mr. Law-rens, and inhabited by a collection of all kinds of people, to whom are given the general name shareholders.] Copper engraving anonymously engraved and printed in or after 1720 in Amsterdam for Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid' The print satirizes the folly and consequence of the bubble economy created by the Mississippi Scheme and its careless investors. Size 29 x 23 cm. This satirical engraving of the Mississippi Bubble is one of the most famous cartographic curiosities. It represents the collapse of the French Compagnie de la Louisiane d'Occident, founded by the Scottish financier John Law in 1717, which was granted control of Louisiana. Its plans to exploit the resources of the region (the 'Mississippi Scheme') captured the popular imagination and people rushed to invest: share prices opened at 500 livres, but rapidly rose to 18,000 livres. At this point speculators indulged in profit-taking, causing a run on the shares. Confidence collapsed, causing a run on the company's capital and the company went bankrupt, ruining many, not only in France, but throughout Europe.
