Seutter Matthias (1678 - 1757) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description: Map shows Bavaria with the 'Oberpfalz'.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

HOLBERG, LUDVIG:

HOLBERG, LUDVIG). - FØRSTE FULDSTÆNDIGE "PEDER PAARS"
- (Kbh, (Phoenixberg ?), Tryckt Aar 1720. Samtidigt slidt hldrbd. Titelbladet i faksimile. Der mangler yderligere et blad (sign. 8) i fortalen. "Denne 3. Edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sewell, George.]
London: printed for J. Pemberton, and J. Peele, 1720 - (8), 87 pp. 8vo, recent calf antique, spine gilt, brown morocco label. First edition. The absence of Curll's name in the imprint of this second collection of poems may represent Sewell's attempt to establish himself as an independent writer. The longest poem in this slim collection is an adaptation from Chaucer entitled, "A Defence of Women; Of the Proclamation of Cupid." Also included are, "To the Memory of My Friend Sir Samuel Garth," "To Mr. Pope on His Poems and Translations" (very flattering to Pope), and a poem by a Mrs. Singer ("On Beauty"), to which the author has written a response. The dedication, also in verse, is to the Duke of Newcastle. One of 750 copies printed, according to the Bowyer ledgers. A fine copy of a scarce title. Foxon, p. 722. London: Wm. Pearson(1720). 8vo., black morocco, covers with an outer double gilt fillet border inside of which are a series of rectangular panels composed of combinations of rolls and fleurons (in the corners and along the sides). The spine has six raised bands and is ELABORATELY GILT-DECORATED within all the compartments; it is without title. Board edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles; a.e.g. Marbled endleaves, with two bookplates of Lord Cowper (the name W. Cowper 1720 is written in ink in the upper margin of the Latin Psalms). The binding is quite attractive notwithstanding evidence that it was carried out with great speed. In several places one sees the rolls extended in blind beyond their gilt geometrical limitation. The book consists of two sets of the Psalms. The Latin version is first and is without title. It is immediately followed by the Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins and Others..., which concludes with its own Table for the whole Number of the Psalms. This nice example of eighteenth century provincial bookbinding (perhaps Scottish) is preserved in a cloth clamshell case with a red morocco label.; 18TH CENTURY--ELEGANT SIMPLICITY
