Chatelain Henri Abraham (1684 - 1743) Amsterdam
Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Tear on upper margin perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 50 x 60; - description: Map shows total denmark with the south part of Sweden and the north coast of Germany with the island Rügen; - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

Dezauche/de l Isle, J.A. / G.
Artist: Dezauche/de l Isle JA / G; date: ca, 1720. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 48 x 64; - description: Map shows the River Rhine - vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
Pianta della capitale maltese di Pieter van der Aa, tratta dal suo atlante "La Galérie Agréable du Monde" pubblicato a Leida nel 1729. Incisione in rame, in buono stato di conservazione. A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Published by Pieter Van der Aa, was also parte of the Dapper's travel. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example.
