OTTENS, REINIER EN JOSHUA
?Imperium Japonicum?? [Click Below for Full Description]

[Portuguese military manuscript].
1720. Folio (216 x 302 mm). 224 (instead of 378?) pages, numbered 21-26, 31-227 (with 58 repeated), 236-243, 364-375. Includes numerous diagrams showing battle formations. Text area ruled throughout with wide ink borders. Modern vellum binding on five raised bands with giltstamped black spine label and ties. Intriguing, very attractively written and illustrated manuscript. Likely composed by a Portuguese military officer for the purpose of military instruction, this early 18th century manual was written at a time of transition from the Spanish "tercio" infantry organization that had dominated early modern European warfare for centuries to the modern linear formation that would shape the battlefields of the Age of Reason. The preliminary matter (of which only a single page remains) consists of a sequence of algebraic squares from 406 to 450 that reveals the infantry's ongoing fascination with the carré organization. The substance of the book is taken up by 123 chapters on forming, deploying and moving the "gente armada" in military units, often in square-shaped "escuadras", other times in a series of "filleiras" (ranks and files). Variously, the army's weaponry (arquebuses and pikes) is discussed. The longest chapter, "capitollo 50", spans some 65 pages and includes a wealth of diagrammatic battle formations (a total of 75, often in two parts), indicating the infantry's vanguard and rearguard ("bemguarda" and "rettaguarda") as well as their marching and field positions ("marcha" and "a seus postos"). This section is followed by a series of chapters on navigation and naval wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Amsterdam], 1720. Title-leaf,25,[1],52,31,[1],8,10pp. plus seventy-five plates (forty-seven double page, sixteen folding) including frontispiece, plus three maps. Frontis. Large folio. Contemporary paneled calf, ornate gilt covers and spine, black gilt morocco label. Remarkably clean and bright. Bookseller's label pasted to front free endpaper. An excellent copy, with additional engraved plate laid in. One of the great satirical plate books of the 18th century, directing its invective at the Mississippi Company of John Law, and the wild speculation and financial collapse engendered by the pioneering stock issuance of the company. The Netherlands was a particular hotbed of speculation, with over 350 million guilders invested in the scheme before its collapse. The plates and their accompanying text, in prose and poetry, begin with a portrait of John Law and follow the course of the speculation in ludicrous and sometimes obscene images. It is a remarkable final chapter to the literature of Law and the Mississippi speculation. "The book is divided into six sections, with no general table of contents. The first part contains the articles of various Dutch companies. The second section consists of comedies and farces; the third part, poems, often containing street language; the fourth part, descriptions of playing cards satirizing speculators; the fifth part, four letters to "N.N."; and the sixth section, chiefly pictures, although pictures appear elsewhere in the book as well" - BOUND TO PLEASE. Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1663 - 1724)
Decorative full color example of this decorative map, which is based upon De L'Isle's landmark map of Mexico and Florida, first issued in 1703. The map introduces the information from La Salle, Bienville, d'Iberville and other French explorers in America. It was the first map to accurately portray the mouth of the Mississippi and the Great Lakes region. Also accurately shown for the first time are the English settlements on the east coast. The reports of Iberville are present in the villages in the Lower Mississippi Valley and Texas, where the Spanish were active building missions and presidios. Several Dutch and German cartographers copied De L'Isle's work, but added the rich embellishments present in this map. The tracks of the Spanish Galleons and routes to Havana are shown.

LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm von.
Frankfurt & Leipzig: Widow of Johann Meyer,, 1720. Aus dem Frantzösischen übersetzt von Heinrich Köhler; [bound with two other works on Leibniz.] 3 works bound in 1 volume, octavo (172 x 100 mm). Contemporary full vellum over paste paper boards, edges sprinkled red. Housed in a custom book-form quarter calf box. Engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. With the engraved folding plate of Leibniz's calculating machine at p. 119 of the third and final work, but without the engraved portrait frontispiece. Library shelf mark, "Bibl. no. 121" in ink to front pastedown, pencil annotations to verso of each title page. Some loss of vellum to head of spine and top edge of front board, vellum otherwise somewhat spotted and marked as often, faint evidence of removed label to front pastedown, contents evenly browned, else a very good, well-preserved copy of the Monadology bound with two relevant contemporary works. Exceedingly scarce first appearance in print of the Monadology, Leibniz's most mature philosophical work, considered one of the most important philosophical texts of the 18th century. Written in 1714 and published in the original French as late as 1814, it first appeared in print in this very rare German translation in 1720, then in a Latin translation by Christian Wolff a year later. The title was coined by the work's first editor, Heinrich Köhler; Leibniz himself never settled on a title, though one of the surviving manuscripts was annotated by a copyist, "The principles of philosophy, by Mr Leibniz". London: for T. Warner, 1720. Octavo (193 x 122 mm), pp. [2], 32, 41-76. Early 20th-century tan calf by Riviere, gilt rule border to covers, gilt inner dentelles, neatly rebacked preserving the original gilt decorated spine, red morocco labels, navy blue coated endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges red. Housed in a brown cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Bookplate of Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration to pastedowns, with cancellation stamp. Some surface wear to spine, inner hinges cracked but firm, acquisition note in pencil (Quaritch, Catalog #405, Dec 1926) and bookseller's printed catalogue slip tipped onto front free endpaper; a very good copy. Rare first edition of this comparative examination of credit in England and France with a comprehensive discussion of John Law and the Mississippi scheme; the latter is discussed with a blend of admiration (in principle) and mistrust (in practice). Defoe's attitude towards credit can be gauged from his decision to sell his shares in the South Sea scheme in 1719, the year before this work was published. "The tract exists in two variant settings, both with erroneous pagination though the text is continuous. In the second version, pagination runs 1-48 57-79" (Furbank, p. 191). "First attributed [to Defoe] by Lee on p. 2, [it] contains the favourite saying of Defoe ' it had long since been receiv'd maxim in the case of war, that the longest purse, not the longest sword, would be sure to conquer at last' (cf. MEDICINE - RECIPES].
A recipe book in Dutch probably written beginning around 1720 but with additions to at least 1758. Most of the recipes are medicinal, but about 15 written pages near the end, separated from the others by numerous blanks, contain culinary recipes. Among the medicinal recipes one also finds a few for ink, shoe polish and other things. The medicinal recipes include treatments for the plague, rabid dog bites, jaundice, worms, warts, scurvy, toothache, headache and many other ailments. Unusually, the complier cites about a dozen sources for the medicinal recipes. The culinary recipes include several kinds of pancakes, waffels and "poffertjes" (a popular Dutch treat like tiny puffy pancakes), tarts, cookies and other sweet treats.A small number of leaves had been used for something else before the present text, but they were removed and the rest recased in the original binding to begin the present manuscript. The only remaining clue to this earlier text is in the index leaves at the end, where a small number entries at the heads of the pages are written in a different hand and in Latin, with references to leaf numbers that are no longer present. They are clearly religious/theological.The manuscript as it now stands has minor marginal defects at the foot of about 40 leaves (not affecting the text) and occasional minor spots, but is still in good condition. The binding is slightly loose (due to the removed leaves) and the parchment shows a few wrinkles and small spots, but the tooling of the centrepiece is clear. A charming manuscript recipe book in Dutch, both medicinal and culina … [Click Below for Full Description]

MICHELIS, Johann Heinrich
1720. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Johann H Michaelis, was a professor at Halle during the late 17th- and early 18th-centuries. He edited this 1720 Hebrew Bible, which was the first attempt at a critical edition. In order to complete this edition, Michaelis consulted 19 different editions and used the 1699 Berlin edition as the basis of his text. The margins contain Latin subject-headings, references and notes. (No Latin notes, however, are given in the interior margin, after fol. 664). The variants are given at the foot of the page. This edition was printed in three forms- octavo, quarto, and folio - this printing is the quarto and includes a beautiful full-page frontis engraving. (D&M 5144). [Attributes: First Edition]

SEUTTER, MATTHÄUS (1678-1757)
Regni Japoniae Nova Mappa Geographica, ex indigenarum observationibus delineata ab Engelberto Kaempfero" Decorative map of Japan published by Matthaeus Seutter in Augsburg around 1720-30. The map was engraved by Tobias Conrad Lotter, after the geographical sketches of the travel by Engelbert Kaempfer to Japan. In the upper left corner there is a large figurative and allegoric title cartouche, with scenes relating to the exploration of Japan. The bottom of the map is ornated with Japanese arms relating to the kingdom of Japan. Copper engraving, coloured by a later hand. Plate size approx. 49 x 56,7 cm. Seutter, an 18th-century cartographer, was born in Augsburg (Germany) in 1678. In 1697 he became an apprentice to the cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann. By 1707 he returned to Augsburg where he established his own business and produced maps (about 500), atlases (since 1728/30) and globes. Seutter's maps are quite similar to Homann's, and were famous for their details, colour, and decorative cartouches. After dedicating his large atlas to Karl VI, Seutter was awarded the title of "Kaiserlicher Geograph". One of his daughters, Euphrosine married the cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter from Augsburg who, after the death of Seutter's son, Albrecht Carl, became the successor to Seutter and a famous mapmaker on his own. By his own account Hutchinson's work would probably have lain unpublished ("slept in obscurity") had it not been for the publication of Boulton's "A Compleat History of Magick, Sorcery and Witchcraft" (1715-1716), a work which Hutchinson felt might "very likely.do some mischief" by renewing the fervour for witch-persecution. DAUSSE (Jean-Jacques). MANUSCRIT.

The cartouches surrounding the maps mostly consist of numismatic elements, some also containing figural depictions.
