CASALE MONFERRATO. MANUSCRIT.
[circa 1720]. 427 x 574 mm.

These narratives are accompanied by fourteen plates of Indians, based on John White's illustrations in De Bry, which do not appear in the regular set. Grotius, Hugo.
Apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1720. Groundwork for Grotius' De jure belli ac pacis (On the Law of War and Peace) was laid in the 16th century by Spanish theologians Francisco de Vitoria, Francisco Suarez, Bartolomé de las Casas, and Ginés de Sepulveda as they struggled with the legitimacy of making war on the Indians of the New World. Grotius saw his book published for the first time in 1625 at Paris: It studies the legality of war and immediately established itself as a foundational work on the topic. Modern scholars regard it as foundational in international law. This edition contains added scholarship from Joannes Fredericus Gronovius (1611-71) and Jean Barbeyrac (1674-1744). In addition to De jure belli ac pacis the reader will find two other important Grotius tracts at the rear of the volume: Mare liberum and Libellus singularis de aequitate, indulgentia et facilitate, meaning the volume treats not just of law of war, but natural law, international law, maritime law, and law of the sea. There are two issues of this edition, the other having "Ex Officina Wetsteniana" on the title-page in place of "Apud Janssonio-Waesbergio." In both editions the title-page is printed in black and red, and of course, they have the same pagination. The work has side- and shouldernotes, an engraved portrait of Grotius, and an added engraved title-page.

Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pythagoras.
[Click Below for Full Description]

KIP, Johannes].
London c, 1720. Large engraved panorama on 3 joined sheets, 450 x 1080 mm., a clean, crisp, impression. A fine prospect of Edinburgh taken from Kip's "Britannia Illustrata" - it is known widely as the 'Queen Anne View'. High in the sky above the city the rococo banderole of the title is suspended between two putti. The panorama shows the city in one long line from (left to right) from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle. Salisbury Crag and Arthur's Seat are seen in the background. A number of buildings portrayed in this panorama survive today: Canongate Church, St Giles Cathedral, Tron Church and Canongate Tolbooth. This magnificent prospect was drawn by Leonard Knyff (1650-1721), a Dutch artist living in England, as was its engraver, Johannes Kip (1653-1722), a master printmaker and dealer.

[LITURGIE]
[Click Below for Full Description]
