Detailed map of Arabia and the Turkish Empire with a large decorative cartouche. Homann was a German engraver and publisher who established himself and his family as perhaps the most famous German map publishers. Following his death in 1724, the business continued under the name "Homann Heirs".

He was active in Amsterdam as drawing master and later director of the Academy. The painter Jacob Cats (1741-1799) was one of his pupils. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is undoubtedly the most famous artist of the dutch Golden age. Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720-1778) was a french painter and draughtsman. He was the son and pupil of Franz Eisen. In 1741 he went to Paris, and in the following year entered the studio of Le Bas. His talent and his sparkling wit gained him admission to the court, where he became painter and draftsman to the King, and drawing-master to Madame de Pompadour. Condition: Good, given age. Description: Published in Amsterdam by Covens & Mortier c. 1720.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Frederik/Frederick de Wit' after 'Covens & Mortier'. Frederik/Frederick de Wit (Amsterdam 1630-1706), was a famous engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. He acquired many of the printing plates of Blaeu and Janssonius when it came to auction. His map were very popular because of the quality of the engravings and the beautiful colouring. After his death his work was re-issued by Pieter Mortier and Covens & Mortier. Pieter und David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house "Covens and Mortier" in Amsterdam. CASALE MONFERRATO. MANUSCRIT.
[circa 1720]. 427 x 574 mm. Très beau plan manuscrit sur papier, à l'encre noire et aquarelle, montrant la rivière Pô et ses nombreux bras, et le détail du plan et des fortifications de la ville de Casale Monferrato dans le Piémont. Propriété des ducs de Mantoue au XVIIe siècle, la ville de Casale Monferrato est vendue en 1682 au roi de France Louis XIV qui charge Vauban d'en renforcer les fortifications. Une première campagne de travaux s'achève en 1684, puis une seconde a lieu en 1691-1693 pour aboutir au résultat définitif montré par notre plan. Durant la Guerre de la Ligue d'Augsbourg (1688-1697), Casale est prise par les Piémontais puis, en 1696, reprise par Vauban lui-même. Les fortifications de la ville furent détruites par les Français avant la restitution définitive de la ville aux Piémontais par le traité d'Utrecht de 1713. Le plan est orienté par une rose des vents. Condition excellente.
