Aa, van der Peter (1695 - 1733) Leiden
Artist: Aa van der Peter ca ; issued in: Leiden; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 34 x 41; - description: Map shows the Rhine-Main area in Hessen; - vita of the artist: Pieter van der Aa ( 1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps.
[Click Below for Full Description]

He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

Law, John
Paris, 1720. [3]pp., on a bifolium, plus additional [2]pp. manuscript letter and 8pp. printed document. Light wear at edges. Slight ink bleed through, light tanning. Very good. In French. A fascinating letter by John Law, the Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself, but that national wealth depended on trade, and originator of major economic ideas such as "The Scarcity Theory of Value" and the "Real Bills Doctrine." His theories led to him being given oversight of monetary policy in France by the regent Philippe D'Orléans after 1716, and then being named the Controller General of Finances in 1720, during which time he oversaw the spectacular rise and collapse of the Compagnie d'Occident. The so-called Mississippi Company monopoly, along with the South Sea Bubble, became one of the mythical early bubbles. Early investors in the company became near- instant millionaires (indeed, the word 'millionaire' originated from Mississippi Company traders), and by January 1720 prices were rising by 23% per month. The bubble popped in May 1720, leaving riots in its wake. "A general bank was established in May 1716 at Law's prompting. This was followed on 21 August 1717 by the Company of the West (Compagnie d'Occident) which had exclusive rights to exploit the French colony in Louisiana (hence the title Mississippi Company and, later, Mississippi System or, simply, the system for Law's whole enterprise). On 4 December 1718 the General Bank (Banque Générale) was renamed a royal bank (banque royale). Gradually, from … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seutter Matthias (1678 - 1757) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description: Map shows Bavaria with the 'Oberpfalz'.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.
