Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Published by Pieter Van der Aa, was also parte of the Dapper's travel. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example.

Artist: Aa van der Peter ca ; issued in: Leiden; date: ca1720 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 34 x 41; - description: Map shows the Rhine-Main area in Hessen; - vita of the artist: Pieter van der Aa ( 1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

[Click Below for Full Description]

II and therefore a date after 1679" ( dem Todesjahr von Nicolaus Visscher I ). Homann, Johann Baptist
Nuremberg: : , c1720. Engraved double page, hand colored in outline mostly, large cartouche, 485 x 575 mm (23" x 19 1/2"). A few chips in margins, scattered minor browning, normal aging and toning; otherwise very good. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was considered the father of German mapmaking, and in 1715 was actually appointed the Geographer to the Emperor. He founded his mapmaking business in 1702, and he would produce several major atlases between 1707 and 1716. The current map shows a fair amount of detail of Transylvania and her boarders, and includes a large colored cartouche featuring an eagle on the top, and a Roman soldier to the right.
