[STOOPENDAAL, Bastiaen]
Amsterdam, 1720. Amsterdam,, 1720. [c1700]. Engraving with etching on two sheets joined. View of the Kolveniersburgwal, taken from the Bushuissluis looking towards the Amstel river. A key in Dutch and French lists seven places of interest these include among others the 'Bosjes Sluis', the bridge spanning the canal; the impressive Zuiderkerk tower; the Oost-Indisch Huis, or East India Company House; and the tower of the Koveniersdoelen, from whence the canal gained its name. The Kloveniersdoelen ("musketeers' shooting range") was a complex of buildings in Amsterdam which served as headquarters and shooting range for the local schutterij (civic guard). The companies of kloveniers were armed with an early type of musket known as an arquebus, known in Dutch klover, hence the name kloveniers. The print depicts a bustling city with gentlemen and women rubbbing shoulders with street vendors and beggars. To the right of the view a large barge is shown off-loading its wears next to East India House. To the left women are shown unloading crockery for sale in the local market. Further down the canal more boats ply their trade and in the distance the one can just pick out the Amstel river. A later state of the print with a new impressive building constructed on the left hand side of the print, partially blocking out the Zuiderkerk. Bastiaen Stoopendaal (1636-1707) … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Published by Pieter Van der Aa, was also parte of the Dapper's travel. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example.

Paul DECKER "il vecchio"

[Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1663 - 1724)
Decorative full color example of this decorative map, which is based upon De L'Isle's landmark map of Mexico and Florida, first issued in 1703. The map introduces the information from La Salle, Bienville, d'Iberville and other French explorers in America. It was the first map to accurately portray the mouth of the Mississippi and the Great Lakes region. Also accurately shown for the first time are the English settlements on the east coast. The reports of Iberville are present in the villages in the Lower Mississippi Valley and Texas, where the Spanish were active building missions and presidios. Several Dutch and German cartographers copied De L'Isle's work, but added the rich embellishments present in this map. The tracks of the Spanish Galleons and routes to Havana are shown.

JUSTINIAN
Lipsiæ: Sumptibus Jo. Friderici Gleditschii B. Filii, 1720. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force." ― Justinian I A rare 18th-century law commentary on Justinian's 'Institutes' by Denis Godefroy. The 'Institutes of Justinian' is a portion of the full Corpus Juris Civilis, largely based on the Institutes of Gaius. Justinian sought to reform Roman law and education. This work was originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook, they also carried legal weight ...as law! In 530 A.D., Emperor Justinian I commissioned the rewriting of all Roman Law, which included case law, civil law, and a guide for helping juries interpret laws. Some of the most important laws that Justinian helped established were those that protected women from being forced into prostitution, and the severe punishment for rapists. These helped create a Byzantine culture that had not yet established a firm structure. The Godefroy editions of this iconic work were influential in the law field well into the 20th-century. While Godefroy was known as a jurist, his fame came from his new edition of the 'Corpus', which went through dozens of editions through the 18th-century. This edition includes additional notes by Dutch lawyer Simon van Leeuwen.

[Click Below for Full Description]

John Coppedge, Surveyer
Richmond County, Virginia, 1720. Unbound. Very good. This document, which measures approximately 12.5" x 16" was created by John Coppedge or William Hackney in 1720. The inset map measures 8.5" x 5.75:. The document is in nice shape with a few tiny holes at the intersection of some filing folds; a 5" x 2.5" piece of margin has been removed. An 8.5" x 6" wonderful plat map is drawn in the upper left corner of the document and a 4" x 5" key is adjacent. The map is titled "William Hacknee his plat for 824 Acres of Land." It contains an ornate compass rose with a center pinprick surveyor's compass was used for orientation. It includes important features found on Hackney's property including: "Rockie River", "Cow Lick Run", "The Marsh Path", and "The Rowlling Road to Rappa:".
