Koehler, Johann David.
1720. Folio. With engraved title and engraved table of contents, 40 numbered engraved double-page maps, including one world map, and 4 numbered engraved double-page plans, all in original hand colour. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt stamped spine title. A well-preserved copy of this 18th century atlas of the classical world, containing maps of remarkable quality, skilfully coloured. Beginning with a map of the entire ancient world and one of Europe, it includes several European countries as well as Asia and Africa, with maps of Arabia, Persia, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. The plans show the cities of Rome, Athens, and Jerusalem as well as the camp of the Israelites in Sinai. Bringing up the rear, maps no. 43 and 44 provide an overview of the political situation in Europe, Northern Africa and parts of Asia in the 5th century. The cartouches surrounding the maps mostly consist of numismatic elements, some also containing figural depictions. An illustration of the Titan Atlas constitutes the centre of the engraved title. - Wants the engraved dedication and portrait. Contemporary ownership of M. Elias to flyleaf. Binding slightly rubbed, hinges starting. Paper slightly browned; margins of the flyleaf, the title-page, the index and of maps 19-27 more noticeably waterstained. One large crease to the table of contents. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership, dated 1979, to the pastedown. Phillips 31. Napoli, Musca, 1720 & 1721. 4to. Bound together in one contemporary full vellum bindingwith old, faded title in ink to spine. A vertical crack to the spine, but binding fine and tight. A bit of wear to extremities. A bit soiled, but all in all good and completeley unrestored. Some quires quite browned and some quires with brownspotting. Book-plate to inside of front board (LA Law Library) and contemporary owner's signature to title-page (De Marinis). Some contemporary underlinings and marginal pointers to the first leaves. First title printed in red and black. (4), 195, (1) pp. + (4), 260 pp. ¶ The exceedingly scarce first edition of what is arguably Vico's magnum opus, his great work on law, which is now generally accepted as the first version of his New Science, due to which Vico is now considered one of the most important philosophers of all times. The work consists in the two books known as "De Uno" and "De Constantia" that were published separately in 1720 and 1721 respectively. They are almost always bound together and we know that all copies of that Vico gave away contain both works. Having finished his magnum opus, he couldn't put it away and began making extensive notes and revisions - evident from the extremely annotated copy that he himself had, where not a single margin was left blank. These annotations were later published as his "Notae" and sometimes accompany the first two books to make up what is known as the "Diritto Universale" (or "Universal Right"). . It is in this magnificent work of law - these two books that constitute the most comprehensive work that … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DEFOE, Daniel].
Amsterdam.L'Honore' et Chatelain. 1720. [2], xii, 629pp. With engraved vignette on title, title printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece by B. Picart, signed and dated 1720, folding engraved map of the world, and 6 full-page engraved plates. Recently rebound in a fine reproduction binding of full sponged calf with an elaborately decorated spine. First French edition of Daniel Defoe's famous "The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", in the first French translation by Themiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe and Justus van Effen, published at Amsterdam. Without the continuations "Farther Adventures" and "Serious Reflections" which, however, never matched the genius of the original story. All early French editions of Defoe's Robinson were published at Amsterdam. It wasn't until 1761 that a Paris edition was published. Title and frontispiece lightly soiled; small hole and some corner wear to frontispiece; map creased; else a very good copy in a handsome binding.Gumuchian 4793, plate 82. The second volume was published later in 1720, the third in 1721.

Lovisa Domenico
Cicogna 4541, Succi 230

(Kbh, (Phoenixberg ?), Tryckt Aar 1720. Samtidigt slidt hldrbd. Med det kobberstukne portræt af Dorothea (opklæbet) og alle 14 træskårne plancher. Indvendig med nogle brugsspor. Titelbladet i faksimile. Der mangler yderligere et blad (sign. 8) i fortalen. "Denne 3. Edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft with Observations Upon Matters of Fact. By Francis Hutchinson, D.D. Published: R. Knaplock and D. Midwinter, London,1720. Second edition. pp. half-title, title, 18pp Dedication, 7pp Contents, 1p Publisher's Catalogue, 336pp. original calf, neatly rebacked with new spine and end-papers. The second, and best enlarged edition: the new material including the recent Salem witch trials. Leather rubbed and bumped at the corners. Contents solid and tidy with just some occasional minor marking. Some (old) ink figures to verso of half title. Overall a solid tidy copy. HOWES H-848, "aa." for the first edition; Alden 720/126; Sabin 34063 Chapter 5 discusses "The Witchcrafts at Salem, Boston, and Andover in New-England" and attacks Cotton Mather's arguments. Hutchinson, an Anglican cleric, was vocal advocate for the "miserable creatures [who] have been hang'd or burnt as witches and wizzards" during the witch persecutions and gathered together all the accounts of English witch trials that he could find. He then set them out systematically so that an accurate overview could be obtained, and analysed them in a way that revealed their absurdity and hypocrisy, thus stripping them of any vestige of legitimacy. By his own account Hutchinson's work would probably have lain unpublished ("slept in obscurity") had it not been for the publication of Boulton's "A Compleat History of Magick, Sorcery and Witchcraft" (1715-1716), a work which Hutchinson felt might "very some mischief" by renewing the fervour for witch-persecution. London, J. Bettenham, 1720. 8vo. Nice contemporary English Cambridge-style full calf binding with five raised bands and gilt title-label to spine. Neat minor repair to extremities. A bit of overall wear, but a nice and tight copy. Internally nice and clean with only some occasional soiling that is very light. Engraved title-vignette (36 - i.e. title-page + dedication), XXIV (i.e. "The Character of Mr. Locke" by Peter Coste), (2 - i.e. contents), 362, (18 - i.e. index), (4 - i.e. errata + advertisements) pp. + one plate ("The Solar System"). ¶ First edition of this important collection of hitherto unpublished works by Locke, containing the first printing of his unique work on Natural philosophy "The Elements of Natural Philosophy" as well as first printings of other important works. Assisted by Anthony Collins, in 1720 the journalist Pierre Desmaizeaux brought out a new collection of Works and pieces by John Locke that had not previously been published. This collection, "A Collection of Several Pieces", came to play a great role in the Locke scholarship, not least in recent times, and not least because it contains the first printing of his "Elements of Natural Philosophy"The "Elements of Natural Philosophy" constitutes Locke's main work in natural philosophy, and it is a work that pas puzzled Locke scholars and readers ever since its appearance. The work seems to need some further explanation; at a firsthand glance it doesn't look very much like Locke - the greatest of the English philosophers who has so frequently been accused of not understanding the exact sciences and who … [Click Below for Full Description]

A fugitive from justice in 1694 for killing a man in a duel in England, Law travelled extensively throughout Europe, observing and gaining experience in banking, insurance and finance. He proposed a number of unsuccessful schemes to set up a national bank of issue in Paris (1702), Edinburgh (1705), and Savoy (1712), finally attaining success in France with the establishment in 1718 of the Banque Royale. His monetary strategy included the management of public debt and colonial expansion. In 1717 the French crown created the Compagnie d'Occident, well known as the Compagnie du Mississippi. By converting state notes into its shares, the Company extended its rights over the economic exploitation of Louisiana. In August 1718 it acquired the monopoly over tobacco, and in 1719 it absorbed other French trading companies, obtaining control of mint, payment of the national debt, and receipt of tax revenues. In 1720 the company was united with the Banque Royale, and Law became contrôleur-général, and they had the c … [Click Below for Full Description]

In Spizberga but probably Bologna Per Ruggiero Nemesiano, 1720. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 152 x 90 mms., pp. [64], with a very curious register, and leaves a8 and b1 bound out of place after b7, but complete, with engraved frontispiece, attractively bound in later dark red sheepskin, boards with four gilt corner pieces of a bird chasing a comet, edges tooled with a leafy branch roll, spine spine gilt to a floral motif, a very good presentation copy from the Duc de Massa with his bookplate and an inscription in the hand of his secretary, Alberto Bacchi della Lega, identify the author as the Marquis Castor Montalbani (1670- 1732), a distinguished poet, astrologer, as well as military architect. The binding may also be a presentation as the tooling of the boards is similar to details on the bookplate; light tide mark to some pages, small repaired worm hole at end, and the presentation inscription slightly trimmed by the binder with the loss of a couple of letters but not the sense. There is a copy of this book with an identical inscription in library of the the Casa Carducci (former home of the celebrated Italian poet Giosue Carducci ) which was also presented by the Duc de Massa. The title of Duke of Massa and the Empire, named after the province of Massa and Carrara in Italy, was conferred on 15 August 1809 by Napoleon I to Claude Ambroise Regnier ( 1746 - 1814 ), Grand Judge and Minister of Justice from 1802 to 1813 ( Wikipedia). The poem, in sestets, rhyming abbacc, bawdily mocks the virtue of the Goddess Diana. Copac locates a copy in the BL, and there are copies at U … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston: In N.E. Re-printed by S. Kneeland for Benj. Eliot, at his Shop in King Street, 1720. First American edition. 12mo, contemporary sheep. A collection of nine sermons by Church of Scotland minister Andrew Gray (1633-1656), who despite his short life became famous for his preaching which was said to "make men's hair stand on end" (DNB). There were several posthumous collections of his works, which were reprinted many times. This is the first American edition of any of Gray's sermons, and it has interesting early American provenance with the ownership inscription on the front blank of "Robert Cathcart's / Book God give him / Grace there in to Look / A.D. 1750 / Rit on Board the / Ship Royal Bounty / in Year 1750 August 15th day in Latt 58." Robert Cathcart (1728-1795) was a member of the Cathcart family of Martha's Vineyard. The Royal Bounty was an English whaler based in Leith, Scotland. On the rear blanks are others notes by Robert Cathcart. Some minor defects, wear and stains, but overall a fine, complete, undisturbed copy, enclosed in a custom case.

Creased from folding as usual, else in fine condition. A fine example of the famous speculator John Law's signature, appended to an autograph letter written in a neat cursive secretarial hand, to an unknown "Monsieur", giving orders for the provision of payment, written during perhaps the most prosperous period of Law's career, following Law's appointment to the post of controller-general of finance of France and a month before his promotion to the prestigious title of superintendent. "…Il est necessaire que… vous ordonniez au directeur de la monoye de Tours, de donner en payement des billets de banque qui luy seront presentes… les Ecus qu'il a dans sa caisse… il y a lieu d'esperer que ces especes jointes aux pieces de vingt sols, procureront aux entrepreneurs des manufactures et aux fabricants, toutes les facilites qu'ils peuvent raisonnablement desirer pour le payement de leurs ouvriers…". "In the course of April and May 1720 he was effectively chief minister and minister of finance, a sort of latter-day Cardinal Mazarin and Nicolas Fouquet combined; but on 27 May, the first crisis of his 'financial system', he was temporarily dismissed from office and threatened with imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris. Yet the eclipse was only brief: he returned to office on 2 June with the additional responsibilities of the superintendence of French commerce, the director-generalship of the Banque Royale, and a councillorship of s … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed by W. B. for R. Wilkin at the King's Head in St. Paul's Church-yard,1720. 8vo. Contemporary panelled calf. Ruled in blind with tulip motifs on front and rear boards, spine with raised bands and red morocco lettering-piece; pp. xxi i[recte xxxviii], [2], 488, folding genealogical table; very light wear to extremities, internally, apart from negligible even toning a very clean and fresh copy; provenance: contemporary armorial bookplate of Sir Walter Parker, Baronet of Ratton inside front cover; early 20th century pictorial bookplate of C.A. Bucklin of Saint Paul, Minnesota on oppsite fly-leaf, late 19th-century lithographic armorial bookplate William A. Dolid inside lower cover. First edition in any modern language of the only extant Phoenician historical sources. Three works, originally written in the Phoenician language by Sanchuniathon of Berytus (Beirut) who prpbably lived in the 13th century BC have come down to us in Hellenistic Greek versions, later translated into Latin. Of Sanchuniaton's works three survived only in partial paraphrase and summary of a Greek translation by Philo of Byblos, according to the Christian bishop Eusebius of Caesarea. These texts comprise the most extended literary source concerning Phoenician religion in either Greek or Latin. Phoenician sources, along with all of Phoenician literature are lost. Ugaritic texts confirm the authenticity of Sanchuniaton's writings about the events and cosmological views of the Phoenicians in the second millenium BC. A very rare economics work in which are reprinted a collection of the contemporary satirical texts and prints relating to the financial exploits of John Law and his infamous Mississippi scheme of 1717-20, events connected with the founding of a viable colony in Louisiana. John Law (1671-1729) was a Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself, but that national wealth depended on trade. He is said to be the father of finance, responsible for the adoption or use of paper money or bills in the world today. A gambler and an expert in statistics, he was the originator of economic theories, including two major ideas: "The Scarcity Theory of Value" and the "Real Bills Doctrine." The present work records the economic crisis precipitated by Law. The crisis had its origins in the decision of the French regent, Philippe d'Orlans, to appoint John Law the Cont … [Click Below for Full Description]
