SEUTTER, MATTHÄUS (1678-1757)
Regni Japoniae Nova Mappa Geographica, ex indigenarum observationibus delineata ab Engelberto Kaempfero" Decorative map of Japan published by Matthaeus Seutter in Augsburg around 1720-30. The map was engraved by Tobias Conrad Lotter, after the geographical sketches of the travel by Engelbert Kaempfer to Japan. In the upper left corner there is a large figurative and allegoric title cartouche, with scenes relating to the exploration of Japan. The bottom of the map is ornated with Japanese arms relating to the kingdom of Japan. Copper engraving, coloured by a later hand. Plate size approx. 49 x 56,7 cm. Seutter, an 18th-century cartographer, was born in Augsburg (Germany) in 1678. In 1697 he became an apprentice to the cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann. By 1707 he returned to Augsburg where he established his own business and produced maps (about 500), atlases (since 1728/30) and globes. Seutter's maps are quite similar to Homann's, and were famous for their details, colour, and decorative cartouches. After dedicating his large atlas to Karl VI, Seutter was awarded the title of "Kaiserlicher Geograph". One of his daughters, Euphrosine married the cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter from Augsburg who, after the death of Seutter's son, Albrecht Carl, became the successor to Seutter and a famous mapmaker on his own. Price: Euro 1.950,- (excl. VAT/BTW)

An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft with Observations Upon Matters of Fact. By Francis Hutchinson, D.D. Published: R. Knaplock and D. Midwinter, London,1720. Second edition. pp. half-title, title, 18pp Dedication, 7pp Contents, 1p Publisher's Catalogue, 336pp. original calf, neatly rebacked with new spine and end-papers. The second, and best enlarged edition: the new material including the recent Salem witch trials. Leather rubbed and bumped at the corners. HOWES H-848, "aa." for the first edition; Alden 720/126; Sabin 34063 Chapter 5 discusses "The Witchcrafts at Salem, Boston, and Andover in New-England" and attacks Cotton Mather's arguments. Hutchinson, an Anglican cleric, was vocal advocate for the "miserable creatures [who] have been hang'd or burnt as witches and wizzards" during the witch persecutions and gathered together all the accounts of English witch trials that he could find. He then set them out systematically so that an accurate overview could be obtained, and analysed them in a way that revealed their absurdity and hypocrisy, thus stripping them of any vestige of legitimacy. By his own account Hutchinson's work would probably have lain unpublished ("slept in obscurity") had it not been for the publication of Boulton's "A Compleat History of Magick, Sorcery and Witchcraft" (1715-1716), a work which Hutchinson felt might "very likely.do some mischief" by renewing the fervour for witch-persecution. DAUSSE (Jean-Jacques). MANUSCRIT.

Cicogna 4541, Succi 230

(HOLBERG, LUDVIG). - FØRSTE FULDSTÆNDIGE "PEDER PAARS"
(Kbh, (Phoenixberg ?), Tryckt Aar 1720. Samtidigt slidt hldrbd. Titelbladet i faksimile. Der mangler yderligere et blad (sign. 8) i fortalen. "Denne 3. Edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contents solid and tidy with just some occasional minor marking. Some (old) ink figures to verso of half title. Overall a solid tidy copy. LOCKE, JOHN. - [LOCKE'S MAIN WORK ON NATURAL PHILOSOPHY]
London, J. Bettenham, 1720. 8vo. Nice contemporary English Cambridge-style full calf binding with five raised bands and gilt title-label to spine. Neat minor repair to extremities. A bit of overall wear, but a nice and tight copy. Internally nice and clean with only some occasional soiling that is very light. Engraved title-vignette (36 - i.e. title-page + dedication), XXIV (i.e. "The Character of Mr. Locke" by Peter Coste), (2 - i.e. contents), 362, (18 - i.e. index), (4 - i.e. errata + advertisements) pp. + one plate ("The Solar System"). ¶ First edition of this important collection of hitherto unpublished works by Locke, containing the first printing of his unique work on Natural philosophy "The Elements of Natural Philosophy" as well as first printings of other important works. Assisted by Anthony Collins, in 1720 the journalist Pierre Desmaizeaux brought out a new collection of Works and pieces by John Locke that had not previously been published. This collection, "A Collection of Several Pieces", came to play a great role in the Locke scholarship, not least in recent times, and not least because it contains the first printing of his "Elements of Natural Philosophy"The "Elements of Natural Philosophy" constitutes Locke's main work in natural philosophy, and it is a work that pas puzzled Locke scholars and readers ever since its appearance. The work seems to need some further explanation; at a firsthand glance it doesn't look very much like Locke - the greatest of the English philosophers who has so frequently been accused of not understanding the exact sciences and who … [Click Below for Full Description]

A fugitive from justice in 1694 for killing a man in a duel in England, Law travelled extensively throughout Europe, observing and gaining experience in banking, insurance and finance. He proposed a number of unsuccessful schemes to set up a national bank of issue in Paris (1702), Edinburgh (1705), and Savoy (1712), finally attaining success in France with the establishment in 1718 of the Banque Royale. His monetary strategy included the management of public debt and colonial expansion. In 1717 the French crown created the Compagnie d'Occident, well known as the Compagnie du Mississippi. By converting state notes into its shares, the Company extended its rights over the economic exploitation of Louisiana. In August 1718 it acquired the monopoly over tobacco, and in 1719 it absorbed other French trading companies, obtaining control of mint, payment of the national debt, and receipt of tax revenues. In 1720 the company was united with the Banque Royale, and Law became contrôleur-général, and they had the c … [Click Below for Full Description]
