Insularum Corsicae Sardiniae Melitae Accurata Descriptio ex mente veterum Geographorum

" Unusual historical map showing Sardinia and Corsica together with a cartouche depicting Malta.         Regnorum Siciliae et Sardiniae...

Taken from the "Atlas Novus Terrarum" published in Nurenberg in 1720. Norimberga Nurnberg L. Dufour - A.         Descrizione novissima del territorio veronese - Veronensis territorii nova aucta atque accurata topographia cum australi tridentini mantuanique boreali parte.

Scolari, 1720. Incisione in rame, mm 707x450.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Fascinating plate showing the planetary motions according to Copernicus and Kepler, who both shared heliocentric theories of the solar system. Unlike Copernicus, who believed that the planets had circular orbits, Kepler theorized that the planets had elliptical orbits.         Dissertatio inauguralis physiologico-anatomica de structura mammarum [.].

Leiden, Janssonius van der Aa, 1720. - 4to. 32 pp. With a woodcut title vignette, headpieces and initials. Sewn. Edges sprinkled in red. First edition. - Very rare anatomical dissertation on female breasts, constituting one of the first monographs on the subject. F. W. Mencel (1697-1773) had not only studied medicine, but also mathematics and physics; he would later serve as physician in his native Magdeburg as well as draw maps and architectural elevations in Prussia before going on to teach medicine in Halle and Zerbst (cf. Jöcher/A.). - In his introduction, the author states that humans at various ages favour different foods, but only at the youngest age can they draw nutrition from the human body alone, "for which purpose the female sex has been given two peculiar organs, which rise as prominences from the chests of young women and have been referred to by anatomists under the name of 'mammae', 'breasts', providing nourishment, called 'milk', to the tenderest of beings. These organs (as such) have not been hitherto dealt with frequently," for which reason he has chosen them as the subject of his thesis. Mencel elaborates on the classical derivation of the term 'mamma' before giving a description of the mammary glands, their different appearance in males and females, and their locale on the body. The author notes that there are usually two such glands, one right, the other opposite, on the left. The reason for this, says Mencel, is both functional and aesthetic: "for one thing, it is prettier that way, and for another, if one of them is injured or cannot produce sufficient milk, the other will serve" (p. 9). He goes on to discuss the varying size, shape, colour, and tissue density of breasts, "not the same in all women, but subject to their age, temper, and region": they develop some time before the first menstrual cycle, then expand (supposedly being bigger among married women than virgins), and are at their largest among pregnant women shortly before childbirth, while they tend to sag among the elderly - and even more so among the women of India and Senegal, where they are reported to droop to the stomach. Even in Europe, however, there are areas (says Mencel) where girls are so well-endowed that their breasts resemble pillows, indeed not little hills but enormous mountains. Mencel points out how it has often been observed that women with large breasts are more libidinous and more exposed to venereal disease, a fact reflective of the adage that "every excess turns into vice" (p. 11), then adds anecdotes about unusually buxom women from Utrecht, Elsinore and other places. Proceeding into anatomy proper, Mencel discusses the veins, arteries and nerves throughout the mammary glands, the milk ducts, and the nipples. Another chapter discusses the movement of the breasts during breathing, their "rise and subsequent fall, alternatingly, as we can observe in girls every day". The reason, he adds, "is not hard to guess, for as the breasts are situated on the thorax, so inhaling causes them to expand, and exhaling to constrict themselves", noting the health risks (including lung constriction) involved in the custom of breast binding (p. 26). After a final discussion of the human milk and lactation, Mencel concludes that much could be added on the subject, in particular about the inflammation of the breast, growths, breast cancer, excessive lactation, breast defects, and similar conditions, but his dissertation purposely omits these, as so many medical men have already written about them that to include them in his thesis would be like once more reheating leftover cabbage, and similarly likely to induce nausea, for which reason he will leave it at that. - Indeed, although Mencel's work is not absolutely the first monograph on the subject, nearly all previous studies had focused on diseases, specifically breast infection or cancer. Moritz Hoffmann had in 1662 published a 32-page dissertation "De naturali ac praeter naturali mammarum constitutione" containing an account of

Incisione in rame, bellissima coloritura coeva. Molto rara. Beautiful and rare nautical chart of Sicily taken from "De Nieuwe Groote Zee - Atlas veermerdeen ..." nautical atlas, published in Amsterdam in about 1718. Son of the cartographer Johannes van Keulen, Gerard was an engraver and mathematician, cartographer and hydrographer of the East India Company. Oversaw the reissue of his father's works with some corrections and additions. Uncertain is the date of publication of his atlas, which, however, consists of at least 34 editions between 1680 and 1734. This map of Sicily was certainly engraved after 1718, because it represented the battle of Capo Passero between English and Spanish, which took place in that year. The representation of Sicily has similarities with that by Cantelli published in 1682, while it does consider the corrections of Delisle. As Hydrographer, van Keulen reports much needed information to mariners, signaling the possible landing sites. Copper engraving, beautiful coloring coeval. Dufour / Lagumina 182. Very rare.         LOUISIANA BY DE RIVIER MISSISIPPI

[Amsterdam, 1720. Single-sheet map, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Minor foxing. Near fine. A scarce early map of the Mississippi River Valley, depicting the American region between the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes, taken from HET GROOT TAFEREEL DER DWAASHEID... [THE GREAT MIRROR OF FOLLY], a scathing account of the speculative crashes that led to European financial disaster in 1720. The work was a chronicle of the failed attempts by John Law, Controller General of Finances for the French government, to open Louisiana to trade in order to help alleviate France's financial problems. This led to the creation of the Mississippi Company, which created the "Mississippi Bubble" incident that destroyed the Banque Generale Privee (the General Private Bank, which Law founded). The map depicts the Mississippi River, parts of Louisiana and Florida, Lakes Michigan (referred to here as "Lac de Illionis") and Superior, the extent of French colonial explorations in the region, and names of Indian tribes. It is decorated with a title cartouche incorporating the arms of John Law, and depicting two Native Americans holding a cornucopia, through which flows the mighty Mississippi River.

ISLE DE ST. DOMINGUE [manuscript title]

[N.p., 1720. Manuscript map, 19 1/2 x 26 inches. Original hand-coloring. Old folds. Early repairs on verso along folds, slight loss at lower corners repaired. Light staining. Good plus. A handsome handcolored map of the island of Saint Domingue, probably executed in the early 18th century. The map is labeled in French, showing the French and Spanish halves of the island, with Turks and Caicos to the north and with an inset of the Isle a Vache, located just off the southeastern peninsula. The Spanish half of the island is very sparsely labeled, unlike the French half which abounds with place names. Watercolor wash has been used to enumerate the topography, showing major hills and rivers, as well as delineation of towns and cities. This map closely resembles a manuscript map of the western half of the island, dated 1715, held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

The rare sale catalogue of the famous library of Georg Wilhelm, Freiherr von Hohendorf (d. 1719), Austrian general, Adjutant-General of Prince Eugene of Savoy, and his rival as a book collector. Hohendorf's library contained a splendid series of early printed books, 16 Grolier bindings, a very complete collection of books from the Aldine Press, and a rich collection of MSS. "Although this library of 6787 printed books and 252 manuscripts does not rank with the largest collections of the eighteenth century, the choice of books and the organization of the catalogue make it important."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 246. Hohendorf's catalogue is the first to segregate Aldine imprints into a category of their own. The auction did not take place as the collection was purchased en bloc by the Vienna Hofbibliothek before the sale for 60,000 guilders where it remains one of its chief glories. Very good copy of a decidedly scarce book, preserved in a box. Minor browning (much less than usual). ❧ Folter 366. Longman, at the Ship in Pater-Noster-Row 1720 - FIRST EDITION, two parts in one, each with its own pagination, with general title-page to first part and separate title for the second part. Complete with seven engraved plates contained within part one. Pp.xii; viii; 125; [1], blank; [1], title; [1], blank, 303; [1], advertisement. Original calf-tipped marbled boards, respined to style. Generally clean inside, with occasional marking and marginal loss to pp.37 (pt.I), pp.13 (pt.II). Boards rubbed and dusty, some edgewear, spine and joints fine. A seemingly popular book on farriery, with a greatly improved tenth edition appearing by 1754. All the early printings are evidently now scarce, with just nine copies appearing at auction since 1931, of which NONE were the FIRST EDITION. Only three copies of this 1720 first printing are noted on Copac (at the BL, Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities). RARE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
