POLAND – Baltic Coast: Mer Baltique. Côte de Prusse. De Jershöft à Rixhöft d’après les Cartes de l‘Amirauté Allemande.

      - A rare and highly attractive sea chart, embracing much of the Baltic Coast of Poland, featuring vignettes of lighthouses and other landmarks. This fine sea chart embraces the Polish Baltic Coast from Jaros?awiec, in what is now the West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie) vovoidship all the way west to the resort city of Sopot in the Pomeranian (Pomorskie) vovoidship, just shy of Gda?sk. The seas feature detailed hydrographic information, such as bathymetric soundings, the locations of shoals and hazards, the nature of the sea floor and magnetic declination. On the shore, the locations of lighthouses are heightened in orange. Forests, highlands, lakes, towns and railways are depicted, while the chart is embellished with several attractive pictorial vignettes of major landmarks. The chart is based on advanced hydrographic surveys conducted by the Kaiserliche Marine (German Imperial Navy), as the region was then under the administration of the German Empire. It was issued by the Dépôt général de la Marine, the French Navy’s hydrographic service, which since 1720, had been one of the world’s leading makers of sea charts. The first edition the chart was issued in 1883, with the present edition being issued in 1907, embracing corrections and improvements up to September of that year. Interestingly, in the lower right corner (blank margin) features the contemporary stamp of the likely original seller of the chart: ‘Weisaeker / Opticien de la Marine / 13, Rue du Quai, Dunkerque.’ The major towns and lakes featured on the chart, running west to east, are: ‘Jershöft’ (Jaros?awiec); ‘Lac de Vietzke’ (Jezioro Wicko); ‘Stolpmünde’ (Utska); ‘Stolpe’ (Slupsk); ‘Lac de Garde’ (Jezioro Gardno); ‘Lac de Leba’ (Jezioro Lebsko); ‘Lac Sarbske’ (Jezioro Sarbsko); ‘Lac de Zarnowitz’ (Jezioro ?arnowieckie); ‘Rixhöft’ (Rozewie); ‘Putzig’ (Puck); ‘Oxhöft’ (Oksywie); ‘Gdingen’ (now named Gdynia); ‘Forêt d’Oliva’ (Oliwa Forest); ‘Zoppat’ (Sopot). The most striking difference between the mapping on the chart and the appearance of the region today is the depiction of the area along the shores of the Bay of Gda?sk (Zatoka Gda?ska) and Puck Bay (Zatoka Pucka), on the right-hand side of the chart, running between ‘Zoppot’ (Sopot) and ‘Putzig’ (Puck). While already a popular resort area by the turn of the 19th-20th Centuries, the region was still largely a sparsely populated, bucolic rural area. This would all change dramatically following its transfer to the newly created Polish Republic in 1920. As the corridor was then Poland’s only outlet to the sea, vast resources were allocated to developing the region. Most notably, ‘Gdingen’ (Gdynia), which is shown to be a small town of barely 2,000 residents in 1907, grew to have a population of over 120,000 in 1939, and is today a sizable city and major port. The most attractive aspect of the chart are the 10 vignettes that depict major landmarks, such as lighthouses and churches, including: ‘Phare de Jershöft’ (Jaros?awiec Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Jaros?awiec); ‘Eglise de Marsow’ (Marszewo Church / Ko?ció? Marszewo); ‘Eglise de Gard’ (Grdno Church / Ko?ció? Gardno); ‘Phare de Scholprin’ (Smo?dzi?ski Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Smo?dzi?ski); ‘Eglise de Zarnowitz’ (?arnowieckie Church / Ko?ció? ?arnowieckie); ‘Nouveau Phare de Rixhöft’ (New Rozewie Lighthouse / Nowa Latarnia Morska Rozewie); ‘Vieux Phare de Rixhöft’ (Old Rozewie Lighthouse / Stara Latarnia Morska Rozewie); ‘Phare de Oxhöft’ (Oksywie Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Oksywie); ‘Eglise d’Oxhöft’ (Oksywie Church / Ko?ció? Oksywie); and ‘Hochwasser’, the historic villa, near Sopot. The survival rate of such working sea charts is remarkably low, as the vast majority perished due to heavy use aboard ships. The present chart is thus very rare, we are not aware of another example appearing on the market during the last generation. References: Justus Perthes, Dr. A.         Attaque de Landau commenc? la nuit de 24 au 25 juin et compris le 19 Aout 1713 quil a capitul?

1720 - Manuscript map of Landau Manuscript map in pen and ink with wash colouring. Highly finished, and skilled engineering plan of the siege of the fortress town of Landau, in the German Palatinate.Landau passed into French control under the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), which ended the Thirty Years' War. In 1688, Louis XIV ordered S? bastien Le Prestre, marquis de Vauban, one of the most brilliant military engineers in history, to construct new defences for the town, constructed between 1688 and 1691.During the War of the Spanish Succession, Landau was besieged (and captured) four times; changing hands in 1702, 1703 and 1704, as the fortunes of war ebbed and flowed. Finally, in 1713, the pace was besieged by the French and recaptured, remaining in their hands until the end of the war, their possession subsequently confirmed in the Treaty of Utrecht. This decorative manuscript plan, which highlights the defences of the places, as well as the siege works constructed by the besiegers, is typical of the high standard of plans created by French military engineers in the eighteenth century. 480 by 485mm. (19 by 19 inches).

[Germany circa ] 1720 - Folio (46.5 x 36 cm / 18 x 14 inches): Manuscript on paper, text in German: 120 pp., 2 pp. index, including 4 large coats of arms (3 in gouache, 1 in ink); bound in contemporary calf with crest supralibros, raised bands ruled, gilt compartments to spine (Very good, covers slightly rubbed, spine restored). A fine early 18th Century manuscript copy of an important chronicle of the history of the Fugger Family, embellished with four elegant coats of arms. This beautifully drafted manuscript is an early 18th century copy of a four-part chronicle of the history of the celebrated Fugger family of Augsburg, Germany, based on the original manuscript written towards the end of the 16th Century. The manuscript is illustrated with four large coats of arms (3 in gouache, 1 in ink). The Fugger family of Germany is one of the most famous clans in all of European history. Rising to prominence in Augsburg during the 15th Century, under the leadership of Jakob Fugger of the Lily (1459 – 1525), the family rose to global importance as the proprietors of Europe’s largest banking consortium, eclipsing the Medici enterprise. For generations, the family had a profound influence over the world economy, accruing immense political power bankrolling the Habsburg Empire, in addition to several other ruling houses. The Fuggers’ contribution to philanthropy and artistic patronage was transformative and enduring. The text of the present manuscript is based on that of a chronicle in the Hof- und Staatsbibliothek in Munich (Cod. germ. nr. 2277), which records the history of the Fugger family from their initial rise in Augsburg up to the end of the 16th Century. The chronicle is dated 1599, and several manuscript versions based on this original were drafted during the succeeding generations (R. Ehrenberg, Die Geldmächte des 16. Jahrhunderts (Paderborn, 1922), p. 85). The complete work was only published once, as Christian Meyer (ed.), Chronik der Familie Fugger vom Jahre 1599 (Munich, 1902). The chronologically earlier parts of the manuscript are based on the "Geheime Ehrenbuch," a chronicle commissioned in 1542-3 by Hans Jakob Fugger (1516 -1575), and written by the historian Clemens Jäger of Augsburg. The original manuscript, richly illustrated with magnificent coats of arms by the Augsburg painter Jörg Breus the Younger, was completed in 1548 (the original today resides at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg). It is a fitting testament to the wealth and artistic patronage of the Fugger family during their historical prime and the chronicle is considered to be one of the most important family books ever made in the German lands. The coats of arms illustrated in the present work are based on Breus’s original designs. The chronologically latter parts of the present manuscript were written by an unknown author. The structure of the text of the present manuscript chronicle is as follows: Title page (p. 1) Introduction (pp. 2-3): This prologue introduces the family and briefly discusses its origins in Swabia, before charting its early rise in Augsburg up to the mid-15th Century. Part 1 (pp. 4-27): This section details the separation of the family into two lines, respectively founded by the two sons of Hans Fugger: Andreas Fugger (1394 - 1457), forefather of the "vom Reh" branch of the Fugger family, and Jakob Fugger the Elder (circa 1398–1469), forefather of the "von der Lilie" branch. Part 2 (pp. 7-27): This section chronicles the "vom Reh" branch founded by Andreas Fugger, featuring their magnificent coloured coat of arms. The arms were granted to the family in 1462 by Emperor Frederick III in recognition of their business accomplishments. The arms feature a gold deer upon a blue shield, hence the branch acquired the name "vom Reh" (meaning ‘of the Deer’). Part 3 (pp. 28-46): This sections concerns the "von der Lilie" branch founded by Jakob Fugger the Elder, featuring their fine coloured coat of arms (p. 28), that the family received from Emperor Fred

A short discourse concerning pestilential contagion. J. F. Fulton's copy

London: Sam. Buckley; Ralph Smith, 1720. Mead, Richard (1673-1754). A short discourse concerning pestilential contagion, and the methods to be used to prevent it. London: Sam. Buckley; and Ralph Smith, 1720. 8vo. [8], 1-59 [1] pp. 197 x 120 mm. Later marbled wrappers, chipped, tear in back wrapper, spine mended with clear tape. Internally very good. Bookplates of John Farquhar Fulton (1899-1960) and the Yale Medical Historical Library. First Edition. In 1719, in response to the public alarm over the outbreak of plague in Marseilles, the British government asked Mead to prepare a statement concerning prevention of the disease. Mead’s Short Discourse anticipated the development of the English public health system in concluding that isolation of the sick in proper places is more effectual in checking the spread of contagion than either general quarantine or fumigation. Mead’s book enjoyed a great popularity, going through seven editions within a year of its publication. This copy is from the library of physiologist and bibliophile John Farquhar Fulton, author of the definitive biography of Harvey Cushing and of several important medical bibliographies; see (7 entries). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Statue of King Charles ye 2nd at Stocks Market.

Sold by John Bowles, Print & Map-Seller over against Stocks Market, [c.1720]., London, - Standing on Cromwell's Head Engraved print. A view of the equestrian statue of Charles II, donated by Sir Robert Vyner. Sir Robert Vyner (1631-88) was a goldsmith and banker. He made the crown and orb for Charles II's coronation in 1661, after the original Crown Jewels had been lost while his father Charles I was fleeing the country. Vyner was made goldsmith to the King and knighted as a reward, and became Lord Mayor of London in 1674. In 1668 St Mary Woolchurch was demolished to make way for the construction of a new market, rebuilt as a fruit and vegetable market. The years after Vyner became Mayor, he erected the statue in the centre. The statue had in fact been bought from Europe as an unfinished statue of John Sobieski, King of Poland, trampling on a Turk. Vyner had the statue altered so that Sobieski's head was replaced by Charles's, and the Turk turned into Oliver Cromwell. The figure trampled under the horse's hooves is dressed in flowing Eastern robes. The statue was moved to make way for the construction of Mansion House. Image: 345 by 465mm (13.5 by 18.25 inches). Sheet: 420 by 550mm (16.5 by 21.75 inches). BM 1880,1113.3609.
