Descriptio Acurata Terrae Promissae per Sortes XII / Terre Sainte Moderne

Paris: Danet, 1720. 2 maps on one sheet. Engraving with original hand outline color. Image measures 18 x 28.5". Sheet measures 21.75 x 30.5". This hard-to-find pair of maps on one sheet offers a fascinating comparison of the Holy Land in ancient and modern times. On the left historical map, the region extended from Damascus south the tip of the Dead Sea is divided into the 12 tribes of Israel, separated by hand-colored borders. The index includes cities, rivers, mountains, and other prominent geological features. The map on the right depicts the same region in modern times--the early 18th century--now divided into provinces under Turkish rule. In addition to labeled features, this map also contains a number of notations, particularly around the Dead Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea, that describe the geography and politics of the region. Decorative title cartouches at the top of each map feature finely detailed scrollwork. In addition, descriptive text in French also runs along the bottom of both maps. The maps were published in de Fer's "Atlas ou recueuil de cartes geographiques." The sheet is in very good condition with wide margins. Scattered stains and a tear in the lower edge affecting only the margin and text panel. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific cartographer, engraver and publisher who took over the family map business from his mother when she retired in 1687. The business flourished and he gained a great reputation in his lifetime and was appointed 'Geographer to the King' in 1690. This map demonstrates his skill and provides a curious yet alluring mixture of history and geography.

BLOEYENDE OPKOMST DER ALOUDE EN HEDENDAAGSCHE GROENLANDSCHE VISSCHERY

Amsterdam: Joannes Oosterwyk, 1720. FIRST EDITION . Hardcover. An Extraordinarily Fine Copy of the Most Important Whaling Book of its Time. 210 x 165 mm (8 1/4 x 6 1/2"). 18 p.l., 330 pp., [7] leaves. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum, flat spine with ink titling. Tailpieces, initials, engraved allegorical title, six folding maps, and seven plates, one of them folding. Title printed in red and black. Sabin 106374; Tiele, p. 273 (citing a later edition). A hint of splaying and light soiling externally, a few trivial imperfections in the text, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY with remarkably clean, fresh, smooth leaves, an unworn binding, and virtually no signs of use. Coming out of the context of Dutch domination of the European whaling industry, this treatise by Zorgdrager, identified as a ship's commander in the Greenland fleet, is the most important account of whaling of its era. The book covers the entire area of the northern fisheries, from the Davis Straits to the Siberian Sea, and there are short histories of voyages of exploration, a good deal about the northern lands themselves, and considerable detail about ships, captains, provisions, paraphernalia, and catches. In addition to the general map of the northern regions, there are, among others, maps of Iceland and of Greenland as well as plates of various wildlife. Most impressive, there is a striking foldout plate of animated whaling activities taking place amidst the ice floes. The book is generally uncommon in this first edition, and it is obviously very rare in the remarkable condition found here.

Valetta Civitas Nova Maltae olim Millitae

Van der Aa, Pierre, Leiden - A dynamic bird's-eye view of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, published circa 1720. Seen from the northwest, the city is richly detailed, although likely arranged more geometrically than in reality. Surrounding cities of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as Fort Ricasoli, are also shown to the left of the capital. A figured title cartouche in the lower left shows a group of men, one carrying a trunk on his back bearing the title. The surrounding waters are filled with decorative ships, and a French coat of arms is drawn in the upper left corner to indicate France's colonial control of the region. A key in the upper right identifies 46 principal spots in the town. The map is in very good condition with overall toning and no chips or tears. Original uncolored engraving with narrow margins as issued. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 %u2013 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. His work was especially valued then and now for its precise style of engraving, of which this map of Valletta is a beautiful example. Map. Copper plate engraving. Image measures 11 1/8 x 14 3/8".

Afbeeldinge van't zeer vermaarde Eiland Geks-Kop

Amsterdam, 1720. Copper engraving, 30 x 23.5 cms, black and white, elaborate engraved border, Dutch text beneath; generous margins, blank verso. A Dutch map, satirising the folly of their French neighbours (although the English South Sea Bubble burst in the same year). Colourful Scottish financier John Law won the confidence of the Duke of Orleans (then Regent of France), and was permitted to set up the Mississippi Company, which controlled all trade with France’s vast and largely unexplored American possessions - believed to be rich in gold and silver. He established the Royal Bank and issued paper money based on the supposed value of shares in the company. Eventually he was minting French coinage, collecting taxes and largely controlling the French economy. The value of the shares soared, the French economy boomed, more paper notes were issued and after a period of wild speculation confidence collapsed, ruining investors throughout Europe. The imaginary ‘mad-head’ island depicted by the engraver in a sea of shares and inhabited by shareholders (discovered by Mr Law-rens) has an ass’s ears and wears a fool’s cap. Cartographic features are given punning names such as the River Bubble, the Island of Despair and the town of ‘Madmandam’.

A New Map of The North Parts of America claimed by France

London., 1720 [1730]. under the names of Louisiana, Mississippi, Canada and New France with the adjoyning terriories of England and Spain....Herman Moll 1720. 2 sheets joined. Size: 630 x 1040 mm. Copperplate map with original outline colour. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes, some staining, however, the overall condition is excellent. This interesting and intriguing map by Herman Moll was published as a possible rebuttal to the Frenchman Guillaume DeLisle's claims to French possessions in America via his earlier map of 1718 of the Mississippi valley. This map, and that of Delisle, were strategic and important weapons in the cartographic war that raged at that time between France and Britain for European dominance in America. The map is decorated with a large inset of "The Indian Fort Sasquesahanor", the fort according DeLisle's map marked the dividing line between French and British territories. There are two inset plans: that of Annapolis harbour, and the mouth of the Mississippi river in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a delightful cartouche dedicated to Thomas Bromsall. This is a map that has strong decorative, cartographic and political appeal to the collector and scholar alike.

The Western Prospect of Bears-Den Hall in Co. Surrey.

London 1720 - Broadside, large folio, overall 10" x 14", etched, printed one side as issued. A rare Satire on the villa occupied by the Norwegian gem engraver and artist Charles Christian Reisen. The purpose of this satire is puzzling. It has been suggested that it is a joke or a sly dig at a fellow artist/engraver, or even a squib at the country gentry that went in for this king of subscription engraving of their country seat. It has also bee suggested that the part referred to as "The Office for Foxes Eggs" may infer a political skit against the Whigs. Exceedingly rare. BM. No 1695

A Plan of the City's of London, Westminster and Borough of Southwark with the new Additional Buildings Anno 1720

London: Senex, 1720. Copper-engraved map by Samuel Parker, with full modern colour, skilfully repaired split at top of centerfold, overall in very good condition. 20 3/8 x 25 inches. A fascinating, highly detailed map of London by one of the leading English cartographers of the period. This is an excellent parish by parish, block by block map of the London that was built after the Great Fire of 1666. (St. Paul's was completed in 1710). The map includes an index that locates the 87 parishes in London and Westminster, and eight in Southwark. Many parishes had new churches built between the years 1670 and 1711, 52 of which were designed and executed by Christopher Wren. Samuel Parker, the engraver, did a superb job of drawing and engraving so that minute details of the city's topography are shown. The attractive cartouche includes symbols of London's greatness: two cornucopeias, one of fruit and one of precious metal objects and jewels. At the base is a picture of a king, presumably George II, whose sword and scepter are supported by two dragons. To the sides and behind these are symbols of British cultural and mercantile superiority. The map is dedicated to Sir Peter Delme, a very wealthy and powerful gentleman, one of the first residents of Grosvenor Square, and, for a time, Lord Mayor. [Carte Méthodique]

[Paris: Silvestre, no date but circa 1720-60]. 1 engraved dedication/explanation leaf (3 3/8 x 4 7/16 inches), 52 engraved cards (each 3 3/8 x 2 3/16 inches), each backed on 19th-century card. All contained within a single early 20th-century brown straight-grained morocco slipcase modelled as a book and titled in gilt on 'spine'. A very rare complete set of early 18th-century playing cards, intended as an illustration of heraldry in France. Later issue of this ornamental set of numbered playing cards in the French suit system (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades), after a presumed first of 1712. The set as a whole is intended to offer a simple explanation and illustration of the science of Heraldry, with each of the cards featuring one or more shields. These shields are used as a demonstration of a particular heraldic term, but also include a caption naming the French family whose arms they represent. A number of the cards are enlivened by one or more figures. This set is likely to be from one of three known issues of the Carte Methodique recorded by the Cary Collection at Yale University. In each of the three known sets, the imprint of the publisher appears printed on the whole sheet of cards. For the present set, this information was lost when the sheet was cut to form the present fifty-three separate cards. Cary Collection, FRA sheet 177,197; GER sheet 242; Albertina 1974, 3, p.167; S. 1720 - This map of the south part of the Caspian sea covers the Caucasus and Turkmenistan. A fine and strongly engraved view of the city of Baku (the former Tereki) is inset in a decorative cartouche at upper right. Armenia is prominently noted covering the country to Erivan on the North and Lake Van on the South. The Turkish Genocide of the Armenians in 1915 resulted in the deaths of 1.5 millions Armenians of which my Grandmothers family was slaughtered in front of her and she was sent to the desert to die. Shame on the Turkish people for still being in denial of this atrocity.
