SEDES BELLI IN ITALIA, COMPREHENDENS DUCATUS MEDIOLANENSEM, PARMENSEM, AC GENUENSEM .’ and ‘VENET. REIP. DOMINIUM, NEC NON PONTIFICII IURIS DITIONUM PARS MAXIMA ET NOBILISSIMA .’. Large map of northern Italy, showing the full course of the River Po, illustrating the region of Lombardia disputed ‘inter Carolum Austriacum & Philippum Andegavensem’. Pictorial cartouche with soldiers and busts of the two regents. Printed on two sheets, not joined.

Pieter Schenk ca. 1720 - 54x48cm each mapsheet, 54x96cm when joined. The cartouche uncoloured, the maps in full original colour. Some verdi gris cracks in border colours invisibly rebacked, both maps otherwise in very good condition. The set of two maps Separately published, based on the five sheet map of the river by Placide de Sainte Helene, published in Paris in 1704. - The War of the Spanish Succession was fought between the French and Spanish who wanted Philip of Anjou, grandson of the French King, to ascend to the Spanish throne, and the British, the Dutch and the Holy Roman Empire who feared the union of the French and Spanish crown and instead wanted Archduke Charles Of Austria, cousin of the recently deceased king of Spain to be his successor. The war began with the invasion of Lombardy in 1701 by the Austrians, and culminated with the complete defeat of the Franco-Spanish forces by 1707. This map appears to depcict the theatre of war from circa 1704 when Philip of Anjou was forced to leave Italy.

He issued a series of atlases with John Maxwell and C. Price, and went on to reissue Ogilby's road atlas. He was appointed Geographer to Queen Anne, and in 1728 was elected to the Royal Society. His beautiful maps are famed for their meticulous detail and ornate cartouches, and they remain some of the best examples of eighteenth century English mapmaking. In this handsome map of Switzerland, the original 13 Cantons are listed with their dates of incorporation, and around the border of the map are the crests of each canton, as well as those of their allies.

        [Carte Méthodique]

1720. 1 engraved dedication/explanation leaf (3 3/8 x 4 7/16 inches), 52 engraved cards (each 3 3/8 x 2 3/16 inches), each backed on 19th-century card. All contained within a single early 20th-century brown straight-grained morocco slipcase modelled as a book and titled in gilt on 'spine' Provenance: Later ownership notation on verso of each card A very rare complete set of early 18th-century playing cards, intended as an illustration of heraldry in France. Later issue of this ornamental set of numbered playing cards in the French suit system (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades), after a presumed first of 1712. The set as a whole is intended to offer a simple explanation and illustration of the science of Heraldry, with each of the cards featuring one or more shields. These shields are used as a demonstration of a particular heraldic term, but also include a caption naming the French family whose arms they represent. A number of the cards are enlivened by one or more figures. This set is likely to be from one of three known issues of the Carte Methodique recorded by the Cary Collection at Yale University. In each of the three known sets, the imprint of the publisher appears printed on the whole sheet of cards. For the present set, this information was lost when the sheet was cut to form the present fifty-three separate cards. Cary Collection, FRA sheet 177,197; GER sheet 242; Albertina 1974, 3, p.167; S.         A New Map of Germany, Hungary, Transilvania & the Suisse Cantons, with many Remarks not extant in any map. According to ye newest and most Exact observations

London: Moll, Midwinter, and Thomas Bowles, 1720. Engraved with period outline colour. Browning at edges, some small marginal tears. Herman Moll clearly undertook the making of this map of Germany with great enthusiasm. With its portrait of the Diet, it suggests Germany, Austria, Hungary and Eastern Europe as far as the Ottoman Empire as a vast confederation, essentially a parliamentary Holy Roman Empire. The complex array of dominions is laid out on a large scale that is quite readable and generally correct.. Moll offers additional information about many regions by naming the resource primarily associated with it, for example, beer with Hamburg and salt with Trieste. Furthermore, he locates many copper, iron and silver mines. It is also an unabashedly English map of the continent in that it includes the route taken by the great general John Churchill (1650-1722) in the 1704 campaign during the War of the Spanish Succession, noting the battles with, of course, the Battle of Blenheim. The map is dedicated to Marlborough and portrays him on his horse crushing his adversaries. The inset view of "the General Diet of the Empire or Parliament..." endeavors to equate the Electoral College with the English Parliament. Over the doorway is a sign which reads, "The Liberty of Germany". "The Publick Good" and "the Comon Necessity" are two figures standing in the doorway. Within is a large gathering of ecclesiastical and secular princes as well as the nine Electors, the most recent addition to the Electorate being the Elector of Hanover, as of 1692. The Elector of Hanover at the time the map was made was to become George I of Great Britain. The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, a New and Compleat Atlas . Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of great scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseatic port city of Bremen, Germany. Joining a number of his countrymen, he fled the turmoil of the Scanian Wars for London, and in 1678 is first recorded as working there as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas . It was not long before Moll found himself as a charter member of London's most interesting social circle, which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill. It was at this establishment that speculators met to trade equities (most notoriously South Sea Company shares). Moll's coffeehouse circle included the scientist Robert Hooke, the archaeologist William Stuckley, the authors Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, and the intellectually-gifted pirates William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and William Hacke. From these friends, Moll gained a great deal of privileged information that was later conveyed in his cartographic works, some appearing in the works of these same figures. Moll was highly astute, both politically and commercially, and he was consistently able to craft maps and atlases that appealed to the particular fancy of wealthy individual patrons, as well as the popular trends of the day. In many cases, his works are amongst the very finest maps of their subjects ever created with toponymy in the English language. Furthermore, Moll is one of the few mapmakers who merits the term "Innovative". English mapmakers prior to Moll tried to imitate Dutch maps as nearly as possible, whereas Moll seems to have largely disregarded Dutch precedents. Removing all the Baroque stylistic elements, Moll replaced decoration with things that interested him about the places depicted, either pictorially or verbally. And he was right to do so. His notes and illustrations are more interesting than the putti and mythical gods of the late Dutch maps.

To Her Most Sacred Majesty Ann Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, This Map of Europe According to the Newest and most Exact Observations is most Humbly Dedicated by your Majesties most Obedient Servant Herman Moll Geographer

London: Moll, Midwinter, T. Bowles, P. Overton, 1720. Hand-coloured engraving. Excellent condition, except for slight browning, mild marginal foxing and small repair at the top of the center fold. Moll's map of Europe is a good example of his mature cartographic style: large scale, clear, bold, with incidental notes that seem to derive from an exuberant curiosity, quite unlike the more restrained and formal French and Dutch maps of the previous century. Moll was a great admirer of Peter the Great and does not forego this opportunity to illustrate in an inset a canal Peter had dug that connected the Volga and the Don, thus connecting the Caspian and Black Seas. A dotted line illustrates the route one would follow from the place where the Don and Volga meet, through the Black Sea, through the Bosporus, the Aegean and Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

La Californie ou Nouvelle Caroline teatro de los Trabajos Apostolicos de la Compa. Jesus en la America Septe

Paris: De Fer dans l'Isle du Palais à la Sphere Royale, 1720. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. One of the largest and most important depictions of California as an Island. This is one of the finest early maps of California and the Southwest. Wheat called it an "important and carefully drawn map"; and Tooley described it as a "fine rare map ... a reissue of de Fer's map of 1705 but on a larger scale and with some notable additions." The map was based on information gathered by Father Eusibio Kino before 1695. Kino, Jesuit missionary and traveler, visited Baja California in 1685. He was among the Seris and Pimas in 1690, after which he transferred to northern Sonora, where he remained until his death in 1711. His missionary work in Sonora included expeditions north and west to Arizona. In 1696, he sent to Rome a compilation of his cartographical work. It was this manuscript, or another similar map now lost, on which Nicholas de Fer based his printed map. De Fer's map is probably the best synthesis of knowledge for the region on the eve of Kino's subsequent 1701 discovery that California was attached to the continental landmass. De Fer still shows California as an island, probably the last great map to do so, and the Gila flows directly into the sea rather than correctly into the Colorado River. The Gila is thick with placenames, and New Mexico is well portrayed. Below the title is a lengthy engraved text that gives the early history of California up to 1695. Over three hundred and fifty towns and villages are located on the map. It is an invaluable record of the late seventeenth century missions and Indian villages in the region. Lowery, The Lowery Collection , 205; McLaughlin, California as an Island, 196; Tooley, 'California as an Island,' 83, in The Mapping of America ; Wheat, Mapping of the Transmississippi West , 102.

[The Great Mirror of Folly...] Het groote Tafereel der Dwaashied vertoonende de opkomst, voortgang en ondergang der Actie, Bubbel en Windnegotie in Vrankrijk, Engeland, en de Nederlanden

[N.p. but Holland], 1720. Folio. (15 3/8 x 9 3/4 inches). Title printed in red and black. Folding engraved frontispiece, engraved list of plates within a decorative surround, 72 engraved plates, maps and broadsides on 73 leaves (5 of the single-page plates cut to the edge of the image and mounted [as issued], 45 double-page, 19 folding and including 10 which combine both engraving and letterpress text), one plate loosely inserted, 2 with sections of blank margins torn away, some other clean tears occasionally affecting the image area. Contemporary Dutch speckled calf, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, repeat decoration in gilt in the others, joints slightly split, extremities scuffed A very rare collection of contemporary satirical prints relating to the financial exploits of John Law and his infamous Mississippi Bubble. John Law (bap. 21 April 1671 - 21 March 1729) was a Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself, and that national wealth depended on trade. He is said to be the father of finance, responsible for the adoption or use of paper money or bills in the world today. Law was a gambler and a brilliant mental calculator, and was known to win card games by mentally calculating the odds. An expert in statistics, he was the originator of economic theories, including two major ideas: 'The Scarcity Theory of Value' and the 'Real bills doctrine' The present work records the economic crisis precipitated by Law. The crisis had its origins in the decision of the French regent, Philippe d'Orléans, to appoint John Law the Controller General of Finances for France. In "May 1716 the Banque Générale Privée ("General Private Bank"), which developed the use of paper money was set up by Law. It was a private bank, but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717, he bought the Mississippi Company, to help the French colony in Louisiana. In 1717 he also brokered the sale of Thomas Pitt's diamond to the regent, Philippe d'Orléans. In the same year Law floated the Mississippi Company as a joint stock trading company called the Compagnie d'Occident which was granted a trade monopoly of the West Indies and North America. The bank became the Banque Royale ... in 1718, meaning the notes were guaranteed by the king. The Company absorbed the Compagnie des Indes Orientales, Compagnie de Chine, and other rival trading companies and became the Compagnie Perpetuelle des Indes on 23 May 1719 with a monopoly of commerce on all the seas. The system however encouraged speculation in shares in 'The Company of the Indies' (the shares becoming a sort of paper currency) ... In 1720 the bank and company were united and Law was appointed Controller General of Finances to attract capital. Law's pioneering note-issuing bank was extremely successful until it collapsed and caused an economic crisis in France and across Europe. Law exaggerated the wealth of Louisiana with an effective marketing scheme, which led to wild speculation on the shares of the company in 1719. In February 1720 it was valued for a very high future cash flow at 10,000 livres. Shares rose from 500 livres in 1719 to as much as 15,000 livres in the first half of 1720, but by the summer of 1720, there was a sudden decline in confidence, leading to a 97 percent decline in market capitalization by 1721. Predictably, the 'bubble' burst at the end of 1720, when opponents of the financier attempted en masse to convert their notes into specie. By the end of 1720 Philippe II dismissed Law, who then fled from France." Goldsmiths 5829; Kress 3217; Muller 3535; Sabin 28932; cf. A.H.         [Asia] To the Right Honourable William Lord Cowper, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, this Map of Asia

London: H. Moll, D. Midwinter, Thos. Bowles, Philip Overton, 1720. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, slightly toned, marginal foxing, centerfold reinforced. A fine example of Moll's intriguing map of Asia, depicting the continent just before the greatest era of European imperial expansion This sensational map embraces the entire Asiatic landmass, as conceived by Europeans in the first quarter of the eighteenth-century. During this period, rival powers, including Britain, France, the Netherlands and Portugal vied for trade dominance in this region rich in spices and precious gems. Most of India was ruled by the Mughal Empire; China was then under the Qing Dynasty; and the mighty Shogun ruled Japan. The British were the dominant traders in India and the Dutch held the lead in the Spice Islands. The map features cartographic insets detailing some of the most commercially important Asiatic locales including; the Hellespont, connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, running past the Ottoman capital of Istanbul; the harbour of Bombay; the Hoogly River, running past modern day Kolkata in Bengal; the Chinese trading islands of Amoy and Chusan; as well as an inset of the Arctic coast of Asia, which some still hoped would one day reveal a 'Northeastern Passage' from Europe to the Far East. The general map shows that parts of the continent lying to the northeast of Honshu, Japan were scarcely known. "Iessu," or Hokkaido has a nebulous shape, connected to an equally mysterious Siberia. This map includes an important feature for mariners, the directions and annual times of the Monsoons in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, winds and currents that either greatly aid or hinder the direction of sailing vessels. The sensational title cartouche depicts figures in exotic Asian costume, surrounded by various riches, including jewelry and Ming porcelain.
