An excellent early issue of this fine early map of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, from Guadeloupe to Grenada, by one of the great French mapmakers. Guillaume De L'Isle (1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De L'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. This map depicts some the highly disputed islands that figured in the sugar trade and the wars between France and England throughout the 18th century. The purview of the map is from Guadeloupe in the north to Grenada in the south, and it includes Martinique, St. Vincent, Barbados, Dominica and the Grenadines. Phillips Maps p.1054. Copper-engraved map, with period outline colour. Fine condition apart from some light old discolouration to left blank margin.

Bound in original Spanish calf. ‘Pasta Espanola". Very tall copy with large margins. Internally very fresh. Generally excellent. Rare fete book celebrating the nuptials of Philip V of Spain, the Founder of the Bourbon dynasty, and Elizabeth Farnese, at Parma Cathedral in September of 1714. Arranged by the Vatican after the death of Philip's first wife, Maria Louisa of Savoy, the marriage was of considerable political importance, and in due course brought about the transference of the Duchy of Parma from the possession of the Farnese family to that of the Bourbons. As not infrequently happened in such marriages, the groom didn’t show, but was represented by proxy (a high-ranking Cardinal!). The prose account retails the entry of the massive Vatican entourage into Parma, the tour of the Farnese apartments and other possessions and selected local attractions. The elaborate procession to the Cathedral is set out, with remarks on costume and of course the decoration of the cathedral is treated at length. The Farnese court painter Ilario Spolverino (1657-1734) was commissioned to make a series of paintings of the event, from which a number of engravings were made for the work at hand by the Bolognese Francia. The plates include an allegorical frontispiece in which winged figures present an oval portrait of Elizabeth Farnese to the (apparently) smitten King; (1) an "extra" large plate showing the entry of the Vatican party into Parma, complete with 24 mules; (2) the exterior of the cathedral decorated with draperies and family arms; (3) the decorated interior, with draperies and allegorical emblems, and showing as well the contemporary state of the Cathedral’s permanent decoration, a subject of considerable art historical interest; (4) the wedding proceedings "live," including the panoply of the filled cathedral; (5) an architectural plan of the cathedral.* Berlin Kat. 3060; Lipperheide Si 36; Cicognara 1491; Vinet 567; Coxe, Memoirs of the Kings of Spain and of the House of Bourbon; R.A. - First English edition. Edited in French in 1716, but without the postscript by Edmund Halley (the one who gave the name to the comet) and the anonymous report on the Jesuits in Paraguay. Frezier, member of a French family emigrated to Scotland and having returned to France, was born in Chambéry in 1682, studied in Paris and became a military engineer with very diversified interests. Thus his 'Traité des feux d'artifice', first edited in 1706, is considered a reference work on fireworks. Sent on orders of the French court to spy on the Spanish forts and settlements in South America and to verify the calculations done by the expedition of Louis Feuillée between 1707 and 1712, Frezier brought back invaluable scientific information from his stays. He thus describes the Chilean strawberry (Fragaria Chilonesis) and brought this fruit to Europe for the first time. His maps and descriptions of Cape Horn were very much considered in the 19th century and his descriptions of the Argentine, Chilean and Peruvian native populations and the early European settlements were amongst the most appreciated. With the exception of the frontispiece, the above edition contains the same copper plates as those of the French publication. This edition is particularly valued for the 3-paged postscript by Halley and the additional description of the Jesuit missions. The maps and views of Sta. Catharina, Tierra del Fuego, La Conception, Santiago, Valparaiso, Lima, Arica, San Salvador de Bahia and others. With a remarkable representation of early golf. The total number of plates is 38, not as proposed on the title (37 plates). The endpaper is loosened but otherwise an immaculate copy. The beautiful binding is slightly worn.         Exceedingly Rare Autographed Colonial Legal Document

New York, 1717. unbound. 11.25 x 8.25 inches, City of New York, Commissioner for recording, Office of the Attorney General, February 14, 1717 -- a legal writ whereby Jamison presents charges against a colonist, in part: "David Jamison for our Lord the King George, by the grace of God of Great Britain, Wales and Scotland - and before John Johnston Esq., Mayor of the City of New York, on the 27th of Jan, in the fourth year of his reign...were informed that Jacob Bonnott...having insulted the King, faces damages sought in the amount of 24 shillings." Clearly signed "CJamison" as Recorder. Directly beneath this document, the Mayor of New York, John Johnston (1717 - 1719) pens his verdict in the form of an autographed document signed, February 14, 1717, in part: "CJacob Bonnett, the defendant, in his proper pardon before the above...acknowledged the above action and comforth judgment. I give judgment for the Plaintiff for one pound & four shillings Damages with Costs." A remarkable Colonial document. Slight weaknesses at the folds; very good(-) condition. Jamison was a Colonial lawyer, Attorney General of New York and New Jersey, staunch defender of religious freedom, and one of the founders of the Trinity Church. He was expelled from England (by the Stuarts) and sold into servitude in America because of his religious beliefs. As an accomplished lawyer, he later represented Reverend Francis Makemie, whereby the latter, a Presbyterian, was charged with "Preaching without a license in a private house." In this landmark case, Jamison argued for toleration in such a colony as New York, pointing out that he himself was (secretly) one of the founders of Trinity Church. To the amazement of many, Makemie was acquitted, and soon after, religious tolerance was enacted into the State Charter (1707). Jamison would eventually receive a Royal Commission as Recorder and Attorney General of New York. The founders of Trinity Church. Jamison was expelled from England (by the Stuarts) and sold into servitude in America because of his religious beliefs.

With woodcut printer's device on title-page, engraved headpiece and a large engraved folding plate showing a pruned and an unpruned mulberry tree with letterpress instruction for pruning, a large letterpress folding table. Contemporary paperboard wrappers, spine covered with decorated paper.

Einaudi 4285; Goldsmiths'-Kress 10528.10-2; ICCU SBLE 001708; Inglis Palgrave III, p. 57; not in Arnold Arboretum; Bradley; BMC NH. First edition of "thoughts on agriculture" by the Italian priest Ferdinano Paoletti (1717-1801), who spent much of his time studying agriculture to help his parishioners cultivating the land. The work specifically treats agriculture in Tuscany and mostly concentrates on economic theory. Paoletti was a follower of the Physiocrats, who a believed that the wealth of nations was derived solely from agriculture, and believed in the good effects of free trade. "Yet he supported, in his Veri mezzi, taxes on luxuries, the idea of aiding the exportation of commodities not of the first necessity such as oil, wine, etc.; and in his Pensieri protective duties to encourage agriculture" (Inglis Palgrave). A follow-up was published in 1772 as I veri mezzi die render felici le società, which was later discussed by Karl Marx. With the letterpress bookplate of Pietro Buoninsegni, dated 1805, on title-page. The large engraved plate isn't clearly mentioned in the literature and is likely a later addition. With only a few unobtrusive stains and the binding slightly soiled and with the spine chipped. Very good wholly untrimmed copy.

Calculus interlunii ecliptici e tabulis Philippi Lansbergii quod anno Christi 1724 . . . [Amsterdam?, ca. 1720]. 12mo & 8vo (14.5×8.5 cm). Latin manuscript in brown ink on paper providing information about and tables of data for lunar and solar eclipses, with 3 full-page astronomical diagrams. Contemporary gold-tooled mottled calf.

A nice astronomical manuscript in Latin giving information and tables of data about solar and lunar eclipses, illustrated with three full-page diagrams. The calculations are made for viewing from Amsterdam. Each of the three principal sections has a sort of title-page, all three given above. They concern the lunar eclipses of 16/27 March 1717 and 9/20 September 1718 (both clearly noted as past events) and the solar eclipse of 11/22 May 1724, which may have occurred after the manuscript was written. For this last, the manuscript refers to the tables of astronomical data compiled by the Dutch astronomer (Johan) Philip Lansberge (1561-1632) and published at Middleburg in 1632 and later editions. In very good condition, with only minor spotting and a couple small marginal stains. The binding is somewhat worn at the hinges and edges, and the mottling has slightly cracked the surface of the leather, but it still remains in good condition.

Wird vor dem Versenden vom Buchbinder ausgebessert.. NEUESTE AUSGABE des berühmten Codexkommentars von Johannes BRUNNEMANN! Johannes Brunnemann (7. April 1608 - 15.

A Voyage to the South-Sea, and along the Coasts of Chili and Peru

London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717. Quarto, with 22 maps and plans and 15 engraved plates and views; an attractive copy in contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments with double labels. Frezier on the Pacific coast of South America. Rare: the first English edition, with a new postscript by Edmund Halley dealing with South American navigation. Frézier sailed under the Horn to reach the west coast of South America, and his description and maps (especially those of the west coast anchorages) were much used by later navigators. He gives good descriptions of Chile and Peru. One of his odder claims to fame is that he introduced the strawberry to Europe from Chile. It is illustrated here. 'Frézier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of the book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frézier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants… The first English translation contains the same engravings as the original, but is preferred to the latter because it contains a postscript by Edmund Halley (of comet fame) which corrects certain geographical errors…' (Hill).

ARREST DU CONSEIL D'ESTAT DU ROY, QUI NOMME LES DIRECTEURS DE LA COMPAGNIE D'OCCIDENT. DU 12 SEPTEMBRE 1717

Paris. 1717.. Paris. 1717.. 4pp. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Light foxing. Contemporary inscription. Near fine. A French royal decree naming directors of the Compagnie d'Occident; among these is John Law, "Directeur General de la Banque." Wroth records only two copies; no copies in OCLC. Rare. From the library of Cardinal Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-94), Minister of Louis XVI, Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). WROTH, ACTS OF FRENCH ROYAL ADMINISTRATION 609. MAGGS, FRENCH COLONISATION OF AMERICA 100 (this copy).
