The case of the Island of Minorca: being the credentials and instructions, as well as the generality of the whole island, as of the four universalities thereof, unto Don John De Bayarte, their lawful and General Deputy to the Crown of England.

n.p. London? n.d. ? 1717 - folio, caption and docket titles, 8pp., two of the leaves with professionally repaired closed tears (no loss of printed surface), well bound fairly recently in quarter calf gilt over marbled boards, with vellum tips.         An account of the erection, government and number, of charity-schools in Ireland: to which is added an appendix containing certain forms, &c. relating thereto.

Dublin: printed for J. Pepyat bookseller in Skinner-Row 1717 - 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, 44pp., with contemporary ink erasures and a marginal note, bound fairly recently in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners, spine simply gilt and labelled. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. Edward Synge (1659-1741), archbishop of Tuam, had been installed as the chancellor of the parish of St. Werburgh, Dublin, in 1705, and for the following eight years was one of the most popular and effective clergymen in the city. In the present, really quite detailed account, Synge notes the spectacular rise of the charity school movement in Ireland. In 1708 there were 344 charity schools educating some 8264 children. By 1717 these figures had risen to 1248 schools providing places for 27,000 children. The author first addresses the need for charity-schools, where they might be located, rules that should be observed by 'the persons concern'd in charity schools', financial requirements, charitable subscribers, and suggests orders to be observed by the masters and mistresses. Children should attend school from 7 to 11 am and from 1 to 5 pm in the summer (to 4pm in the winter). Among other things, teachers should 'teach the children the true spelling of words, make them mind their stops, and bring them to read slowly and distinctly'. Thereafter, Synge gives an account of charity schools in the various Irish counties, an appendix (pp. 34-44) prints model forms for subscriptions, apprenticeships (boys), legacies, a 'fault bill'*, a list of suitable books, the costs of clothing both boys and girls, and recommendations for teachers and school housing. A salary of £8 per annum together with a school house, lodging, and garden 'may be sufficient for school masters in country towns and villages'. And the author concludes 'that the whole charge, of rescuing a poor child from the utmost misery, that can spring from poverty, ignorance and wickedness; and of putting him in a way, by the Grace of God, of being good and happy both here and hereafter, is only nine pounds; so much being sufficient, at the foregoing computation, for his cloathing and schooling for 5 years and for putting him apprentice at the end of that time'. * The 'Fault Bill' is a sample chart recording each pupil by name, the day of the week, and identifying what faults were committed by each child. Recordable faults included: 'absent from church', 'late at church', 'playing at church', 'late at school', 'absent from school, or truanting', 'cursing', 'swearing', 'stealing', 'unmannerly', and 'lying'. Original publisher´s blue printed wrappers, the back wrapper with lists of Gimbert´s publications (4 versions). Preserved in a modern green morocco box, with transparent acrylic windows for sides.

Borba de Moraes, p. 762; Nissen, BBI 1717; Stafleu & Cowan 10032. Rare series on Brazilian botany with 70 beautiful lithographed plates, published in 14 instalments by the French explorer, botanist and entomologist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853). Beginning with part 9 his two co-authors are named on the wrapper as well. After a journey of six years through Brazil (1816-1822), he brought home to France a vast collection of plants, mammals, birds and reptiles. There he dedicated himself to the publication of the results of his Brazilian journeys by working on several publications at the same time. The long journey and the pressure of work took their toll, however, and Saint-Hilaire fell ill. He was able to continue his work but not alone. Two respected colleagues, Adrien de Jussieu and Jacques Cambessèdes took over the largest part of the work. De Saint-Hilaire recovered to some degree and together they continued their work. A note in part 9 assures the readers and subscribers that the style and quality will not suffer from this change. Saint-Hilaire intended to issue 50 parts, but only these 14 were actually printed. Each instalment contains 5 plates with accompanying text. Some text leaves in the last 3 parts foxed, a tear in the back wrapper of one part and a marginal worm hole in the front wrapper and first leaf of another. In very good condition, with the bolts opened at the head, but wholly untrimmed.

Histoire du Café” IN: Academie Royale des Sciences

Printed in Amsterdam by Pierre Coup 1717 - __+__The First Botanical Description of a Coffee Tree in the West (1713)__+__ Histoire de l' Academie Royale des Sciences. Annee M. DCCXIII. This is the Amsterdam edition, appearing two years after the Paris edition of 1715--I have also seen references to a later Paris edition of 1733; also, John Martyn translated this for an English volume published in 1747. Lovely copy, bound in full leather, with decorated spine and raised bands. Very Good condition. Contributors to this volume include:__+__ Antoine de Jussieu (1686-1750) , “Histoire du Café”, pp 388-399. This is evidently a coffee incunable in the Western world. "[T]he first recorded taxonomic description of coffee was by French naturalist Antoine de Jussieu, who described a coffee plant from the botanical garden of Amsterdam as “Jasminum arabicanum, lauri folio, cujus femen apudnos coffee decir” in 1713 (“Arab jasmine, with laurel type leaves, the beans of which we can call coffee”)--(Wintgens, 2009, quoted by Caas Brazil, Coffee Taxonomy.) And although there isn't an exact reference to the place of publication from what I can determine this must be the source--the article also uses a quote from the paper that is directly from this paper. Despite the variation in dates and edition statements, In matching contemporary full calf bindings, 5 bands, red and black morocco spine labels, elaborate gilt tooling on spine and edges. An excellent set, light fraying at a few tips, bindings and hinges solid, gilt still bright, spine labels intact, light even foxing to text blocks, pages square and undamaged. The origins of the work are complex and disputable, but the manuscript by Marana survives at least for the early volumes, one or more of the later volumes likely being English additions. Important for the light it shows on what Europeans thought was happening, rather than for exact reporting on what was actually occurring. See Bibliographical Society of America LII (1958), PMLA LXXII (1957), Revue de litterature compares XXXII (1958), and the Times Literary Supplement 12/24/1982 and 7/1/1983 to appreciate the variety of views regarding the authorship of the later volumes.         An account of the erection, government and number, of charity-schools in Ireland: to which is added an appendix containing certain forms, &c. relating thereto.

Dublin: printed for J. Pepyat, bookseller, in Skinner-Row, 1717. 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, 44pp., with contemporary ink erasures and a marginal note, bound fairly recently in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners, spine simply gilt and labelled.

After rededicating himself to the church and becoming an ordained priest at the age of fifty, Calderón de la Barca renounced writing secular comedies for commercial theatres. At the kingÂ’s insistence, however, he continued writing for the stage, devoting himself literarily to producing mythological plays for the palace theatres and to a particularly Spanish genre known as the auto sacramental— one-act allegories illustrating the mystery of the Eucharist— for open-air performance during the feast of Corpus Christi. This collection includes 72 such autos (almost all of the 74 by Calderón known to have survived) and their accompanying loas, or preludes. Ornamented with woodcut head- and tailpieces. Owner signature in Volume VI. Manuscript titling on spines of IV-VI in a different hand from I-III, though still contemporary.Text quite clean and fresh. Expected slight darkening to vellum.
