Acta Medicorum Berolinensium, in Incrementum artis & Scientiarum Collecta & digesta. Decad. I: 1.-10 Vol. + Actorum Medicorum Berolinensum, .. Decad. II: 1.-10 Vol. (20 v. 21 vols).

Beroloni: Apud Godofredum Gedickium, Bibliopol., 1717-1729, kl.-8, schwarz/rote Titelblätter, je einem Portrait Frontispize, mit Tabellen und Kupfertafeln, 1 Pergamenteinband der Zeit u. 3 Pappbände im Stil der Zeit.. Erste Auflage! Jahrhunderts" (NDB 6, 600).Seltene medizinische Zeitschrift. - Kirchner I, 3516 . Hirsch-H. I, H. 7). Agtbaare Gerechte der stadt Middelburg en in appel by den Hoogen Raadt in Holland, tusschen mr. Leiden, Luzac, 1755.

Folio, in 19e- eeuwse band, 106 pag. C1264."Nagtglas, Zeeuwen II pag. 596-599.

A collection of papers, which passed between the late learned Mr. Leibnitz, and Dr. Clarke, in the years 1715 and 1716. Relating to the principles of natural philosophy and religion. With an appendix. To which are added, letters to Dr. Clarke concerning liberty and necessity; from a gentleman of the University of Cambridge: with the doctor's answers to them. Also remarks upon a book, entituled, A philosophical enquiry concerning human liberty.

James Knapton 1717 - Octavo. First edition. xiii, [3], 416, 46, [2] pp. 19 cm. Modern fine leather, gilt ruled, raised bands, red leather spine label. Text in French and English on opposite pages. Contemporary signature on title page. Minor toning, occasional spotting. An important and influential work of natural philosophy and physics. The letters between the English theologian and natural philosopher Samuel Clarke and the German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz cover a scientific, philosophical and theological debate over Isaac Newton's ideas. Leibniz stated that Newtonian physics was detrimental to natural theology. The question of free will is vigorously addressed. In the letters Clarke, an early Newton supporter, promotes Newton's view of absolute space, rather than Leibniz's relational approach. "Clarke saw the conflict with Leibniz as involving not merely a differing interpretation of the physical universe and its phenomena but as a far more basic one implying a struggle between freedom and necessity Clarke's most direct contribution to physics during the course of this correspondence came in a footnote to his fifth paper, in which he considered the problem of computing the force of a moving body." - D.S.B., III, p. 296. "Dr. Clarke became involved in the controversy with Leibnitz when the latter warned Caroline, Princess of Wales (to whom the book is dedicated) against the atheism of Newton, whose God he said was merely a super-mechanician. Clarke warmly defends Newton." (Babson Cat. 229). D.S.B., III, p. 296 Refs: Wallis 62.1; Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 75. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London? n.d. ? 1717 - folio, caption and docket titles, 8pp., two of the leaves with professionally repaired closed tears (no loss of printed surface), well bound fairly recently in quarter calf gilt over marbled boards, with vellum tips. First edition. A petition to the House of Commons alleging maladministration. It includes, pp.5-8: An humble representation of several grievances and hardships His Majesty's most faithful subjects, the inhabitants of the Island of Minorca, labour under, from the arbitrary proceedings of the Chief Commandants, and the troops garison'd in that Island, contrary to the promises and assurances made by His Grace the Duke of Argyle .>.         An account of the erection, government and number, of charity-schools in Ireland: to which is added an appendix containing certain forms, &c. relating thereto.

Dublin: printed for J. Pepyat bookseller in Skinner-Row 1717 - 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, 44pp., with contemporary ink erasures and a marginal note, bound fairly recently in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners, spine simply gilt and labelled. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. Edward Synge (1659-1741), archbishop of Tuam, had been installed as the chancellor of the parish of St. Werburgh, Dublin, in 1705, and for the following eight years was one of the most popular and effective clergymen in the city. In the present, really quite detailed account, Synge notes the spectacular rise of the charity school movement in Ireland. In 1708 there were 344 charity schools educating some 8264 children. By 1717 these figures had risen to 1248 schools providing places for 27,000 children. The author first addresses the need for charity-schools, where they might be located, rules that should be observed by 'the persons concern'd in charity schools', financial requirements, charitable subscribers, and suggests orders to be observed by the masters and mistresses. Children should attend school from 7 to 11 am and from 1 to 5 pm in the summer (to 4pm in the winter). Among other things, teachers should 'teach the children the true spelling of words, make them mind their stops, and bring them to read slowly and distinctly'. Thereafter, Synge gives an account of charity schools in the various Irish counties, an appendix (pp. 34-44) prints model forms for subscriptions, apprenticeships (boys), legacies, a 'fault bill'*, a list of suitable books, the costs of clothing both boys and girls, and recommendations for teachers and school housing. A salary of £8 per annum together with a school house, lodging, and garden 'may be sufficient for school masters in country towns and villages'. And the author concludes 'that the whole charge, of rescuing a poor child from the utmost misery, that can spring from poverty, ignorance and wickedness; and of putting him in a way, by the Grace of God, of being good and happy both here and hereafter, is only nine pounds; so much being sufficient, at the foregoing computation, for his cloathing and schooling for 5 years and for putting him apprentice at the end of that time'. * The 'Fault Bill' is a sample chart recording each pupil by name, the day of the week, and identifying what faults were committed by each child. Recordable faults included: 'absent from church', 'late at church', 'playing at church', 'late at school', 'absent from school, or truanting', 'cursing', 'swearing', 'stealing', 'unmannerly', and 'lying'.       Borba de Moraes, p. 762; Nissen, BBI 1717; Stafleu & Cowan 10032. Rare series on Brazilian botany with 70 beautiful lithographed plates, published in 14 instalments by the French explorer, botanist and entomologist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853). Beginning with part 9 his two co-authors are named on the wrapper as well. After a journey of six years through Brazil (1816-1822), he brought home to France a vast collection of plants, mammals, birds and reptiles. There he dedicated himself to the publication of the results of his Brazilian journeys by working on several publications at the same time. The long journey and the pressure of work took their toll, however, and Saint-Hilaire fell ill. He was able to continue his work but not alone. Two respected colleagues, Adrien de Jussieu and Jacques Cambessèdes took over the largest part of the work. De Saint-Hilaire recovered to some degree and together they continued their work. A note in part 9 assures the readers and subscribers that the style and quality will not suffer from this change. Saint-Hilaire intended to issue 50 parts, but only these 14 were actually printed. Each instalment contains 5 plates with accompanying text. Some text leaves in the last 3 parts foxed, a tear in the back wrapper of one part and a marginal worm hole in the front wrapper and first leaf of another. In very good condition, with the bolts opened at the head, but wholly untrimmed.

Ex opere cosmographico Ibn Alvardi particulam, .Uppsala, Laur. Magnus Höjer, 1752. 4to. With a large part of the text in Arabic with parallel Latin, and some Hebrew and Greek passages. Modern boards.

      - F. Tomasson, The life of J. D. Åkerblad, pp. 20-21; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first (and only?) edition of the thesis of the Swedish linguist, translator and orientalist Carl Aurivillius (1717-1786). It contains a transcription of a chapter on "plants and their fruits" from the Kharîdat al-'Ajâ'ib wa farîdat al-gharâib ("The pearl of wonders and the uniqueness of strange things"), the major work by the Islamic historian and geographer Ibn al-Wardi (d. 1349). The present transcription was based on a manuscript in the University Library of Uppsala. Aurivillius translated the text into Latin (on the page facing the Arabic) and provided commentaries (printed in the lower margins). The present work, however, "was seriously hampered by the lack of Arabic typefaces" (Thomasson), and Aurivillius's later works including Arabic type were to be printed in Germany.Slightly browned, occasional foxing and some minor restorations to the title-page, otherwise in good condition.

Gio: Battista Aiccardo, Palermo 1717 - This is the second "rare edition to be preferred to the first" (Mira I, 115) of an important work on the ancient Greek colony of Syracuse on the east coast of Sicily. The work was first published in Messina and in this second edition has been expanded by the writings and information taken from Fazello, Arezzo, Cluverio and Gualtieri. It is also particularly valued and sought after for its beautiful views of Syracuse, including a great bird's eye view of the city and particularly of the port in the first volume, and the nine folding plates in the second that (Moncada Lo Giudice 277, 1458). There is also mentioned the famous episode of the mirrors of Archimedes during the Roman siege of the city. The work is divided into sections discussing: 1) the ancient island of Ortygia; 2) the aqueduct network, catacombs, and other important features of the territory; 3) the poetic and cultural life of the city; 4) a detailed description of the various landmarks found on the maps; 5) numismatics of the region.         Ex opere cosmographico Ibn Alvardi particulam, ...Uppsala, Laur. Magnus Höjer, 1752. 4to. With a large part of the text in Arabic with parallel Latin, and some Hebrew and Greek passages. Modern boards.

Histoire du Café” IN: Academie Royale des Sciences

Printed in Amsterdam by Pierre Coup 1717 - __+__The First Botanical Description of a Coffee Tree in the West (1713)__+__ Histoire de l' Academie Royale des Sciences. Annee M. DCCXIII. This is the Amsterdam edition, appearing two years after the Paris edition of 1715--I have also seen references to a later Paris edition of 1733; also, John Martyn translated this for an English volume published in 1747. Lovely copy, bound in full leather, with decorated spine and raised bands. Very Good condition. Contributors to this volume include:__+__ Antoine de Jussieu (1686-1750) , “Histoire du Café”, pp 388-399. This is evidently a coffee incunable in the Western world. "[T]he first recorded taxonomic description of coffee was by French naturalist Antoine de Jussieu, who described a coffee plant from the botanical garden of Amsterdam as “Jasminum arabicanum, lauri folio, cujus femen apudnos coffee decir” in 1713 (“Arab jasmine, with laurel type leaves, the beans of which we can call coffee”)--(Wintgens, 2009, quoted by Caas Brazil, Coffee Taxonomy.) And although there isn't an exact reference to the place of publication from what I can determine this must be the source--the article also uses a quote from the paper that is directly from this paper. Also: "The first botanical description of a coffee tree, under the nam Jasminum arabicanum, was made in 1713 by A. de Jussieu, who studied a single plant originating from the botanic garden of Amsterdam."--Charrier, A.; Berthaud, J. (1985). "Botanical Classification of Coffee". In Clifford, M. H.; Wilson, K. C. Coffee: Botany, Biochemistry and Production of Beans and Beverage. Westport, Connecticut: AVI Publishing. p. 14. A wiki article on Jussieu references this paper but in a 1739 Paris edition of the 1713. The 11-page article is also illustrated by an engraving of the coffee tree.__+__Academie des science 1713 _3_ Rene Antoine Ferchau Reaumur (1683-1757) presenting Francesco Bianchini (1662-1729, and Fellow of the Royal Society in 1713 and proposed by Issac Newton), “Description d'une Machine portative, propre à soûtenir des Verres de très-grands Foyers”, (with two folding plates), which to my eye looks like an apparatus to support an aerial telescope.

Etching, 1717 circa, without signature. Example in the first state of two. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with margins, in excellent condition. It was included in Il Gran Teatro di Venezia ovvero descrizione esatta di cento delle più insigni prospettive e di altrettante celebri pitture della medesima città, published for the first time in 1717 by Lovisa, a Venetian publisher who worked in the first half of the XVIII century. Made up of 122 engravings, the work depicts details of the city and the major works of the Venetian artists. The Ponte dei Pugni is a Venetian bridge placed in the sestiere of Dorsoduro, nearby Campo San Barnaba. The bridge shows four foot prints, on the four vertices of the floor, realized on Istrian stone; it has been named after a long gone Venetian tradition: the Guerra dei pugni. The inhabitants of two opposing factions, the Castellani of San Pietro di Castello and the Nicolotti of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, used to fight over the bridge punching each other.
