SAXTON, Christopher.
London: George Willdey, c.1715. Original outline colour. 410 x 540mm. A scarce map of South East England, depictng Surrey, Sussex, Kent and, despite not being listed in the English title, Middlesex. The map first appeared in Saxton's atlas of England and Wales published 1579, the first county atlas. The plate has a long and interesting history. It was engraved by Remigius Hogenberg (c.1536-c.1588), older brother of Frans (engraver of the Ortelius atlas and the Braun & Hogenberg townplans), when the pair were taking refuge in England from the religious turmoil in the southern Netherlands. When John Speed copied most of Saxton's maps for his 'Theatre' atlas of 1611, he decided to use individual maps of these counties by John Norden instead. Superceded by Speed, Saxton's plates lay unused until 1645, when William Web published a new edition, with this map only updated with the arms of Charles I and the date 1642. After a 'ghost' edition of c.1665, the next edition was published by Philip Lea (c.1689), when the English title, the hundreds and symbols (crosses, crowns & mitres) were added. A second Lea edition (c.1693) saw the addition of Ogilby's roads, five armorials and Lea's address added under the original Latin title. Willdey was the next publisher, leaving Lea's details but adding his own along the bottom edge, as this example. A final edition of the atlas was published by Thomas Jefferys in 1749, 170 years after the first edition! [Attributes: First Edition]

Petronio, Riccardo.
1715. 8vo. 8 pp. With woodcut device on title page. Wrappers. An appeal, written in verse, to all religious orders and Christian laymen to take arms against the Ottomans. Apparently an early product of the Turkish-Venetian War of 1714-18, in which the new Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha re-conquered Morea (the Peloponnesus) from the Venetians, who had held the peninsula since 1699. A different version (kept at the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana in Vicenza), published by Giovanni Berno "in Venetia, Bassano, & in Verona", is dated 1715; this date of publication is also supported by the mention of Pope Clement XI (1700-21). However, the Marciana in Venice keeps an earlier publication of the same work produced for the Venetian Alessandro Cortesi, bearing the date 1663. Yet another, undated version in the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova bears the imprint "In Venezia, per Domenico Lovisa à Rialto". No other copy with Remondini's imprint is known. - Some browning and waterstaining; old pagination in manuscript and stamped (apparently removed from an old collection).

QUEVEDO, Francisco de
1715. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future." ― Francisco de Quevedo Francisco de Quevedo was one of the most well-known Spanish authors of the early 17th-century. He is most remembered for his satirical 'dream' poetry in which he writes himself into his story. 'Dreams' is a collections of five visions in which Quevedo witnesses the Day of Judgment and sees visions of hell, demons and devils, evil spirits being exorcised, and more experiences of the occult. The satire came in the form of Quevedo seeing various recognizable groups of people in hell including lawyers, astrologers, innkeepers, Protestants, accountants, Jews, physicians, and ...women. This 1715 English edition was translated and edited by Roger l'Estrange and published by Sare. [Attributes: First Edition]

JOHN PENN
1715. No binding. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed. Bristoll, 4 Decem: 1715. 1 page, with autograph address and six examples of Thomas Penn's signature on verso. The recipient, John's younger brother, Thomas Penn, who later owned ¾ of William Penn's proprietary interest in Pennsylvania, practices signing his name on the address leaf. The ""Black Cap"" referred to in John's postscript is a reference to the famous Quaker hat. Quakers, as a sign of their egalitarianism, refused to take their hat off for anyone, regardless of societal rank. ""Addam"" was William Penn's nickname, a reference to the biblical first man. Grill, Johannes.
Amsterdam, Hendrik van Eyl, 1715. 4to. (12), 224 pp. Contemporary full vellum. First edition. - Tables for the calculation of the value of gold, minted or in bars, of different weight and purity. The weights are expressed in three units: marks (from 100 to 1), ounces (from 7 to 1), and English (from 15 to 1/4). The purity varies from 1/8 grein (1/96 carat) by 1/4 greins to 24 carats. The corresponding values are stated in guilders, pennies and mites (a mite being 1/48 of a penny), all based on the 355 guilder standard. - Nothing appears known about the writer save that he was "essayeur" (gold and silver inspector) in Amsterdam. At the end of his preface he states that he has compiled similar tables for silver, but that the great costs have so far kept him from publishing them. Indeed, some time later the tables for both gold and silver appeared in a single volume, entitled "Essai-boek of uitgereekende tafelen van alle gehaltens in t goudt en zilver" (without mention of the year). Dedicated to several former Amsterdam aldermen, directors of the Societeit van Suriname and commissionaires of the Wisselbank. - A good copy. Bierens de Haan 1835. EHB 213. GRILL, Jan.
STCN (5 copies); not in Hoover; Kress. Practical guide to the calculation of the value of gold and silver of any purity, intended for merchants, mint masters and others who deal with precious metals. The author notes that there is "now" a great deal of low grade gold and silver on the market (below 20 carat and 10 penningen respectively, i.e. below 83 1/3 %), and that previously published guides did not cover these in a convenient manner. He therefore first explains how these metals are weighed in the Netherlands, presenting the units of weight and their relations, and gives instructions for using the tables, with examples. Once one has weighed the gold or silver and assayed it to give the purity in carats/mark or penningen/mark respectively, the tables on pp. 1-223 and 225-395 tell the weight of fine metal in a given weight of impure metal. Once one knows the weight of fine gold or silver, one can look up its value in guilders in the tables on pp. 224 and 396-447. Grill was himself an assayer. In 1715 he published his tables for gold alone, also sold by Van Eyl, and the present tables for gold and silver probably followed soon after. The heaviest weight listed for both gold and silver is 100 marks (so that the tables could be used without multiplication for weights up to 200 marks), but for silver in four degrees of purity, a contemporary owner has inserted manuscript tables for weights up to4000 marks. In very good condition. A rare and valuable window into trade in precious metals in the early 18th-century Netherlands.

TAYLOR, Brook.
R. Knaplock 1715; 1719, London. First edition of Taylor’s important work on perspective, here bound with its second edition which contains significant new material. "Despite the impulses he received from other mathematicians, Taylor’s contribution to the theory of perspective remains highly original. He plucked from the works of others the ideas that were mathematically the most fruitful, and taking these as a starting point, he built up a theory that was far more general, comprehensive and systematic than anything seen before" (Andersen, p. 498)."Like all Taylor’s writing, his book on linear perspective was so concise that Bernoulli characterized it as "abstruse to all and unintelligible to artists for whom it was more especially written." Even the second edition, which nearly doubled the forty-two pages of the first, showed little improvement in this matter. Its effect, nevertheless, was very substantial, since it passed through four editions, three translations, and twelve authors who prepared twenty-two editions of extended expositions based on Taylor’s concepts. He developed his theory of perspective in a formal and rigorous fashion in a sequence of theorems and proofs. The most outstanding and original of his ideas in this field were his definition and use of vanishing points and vanishing lines for all lines and planes, and of his development of a theory and practice for the inverse problem of perspective that later served as a basis for work by Lambert and for the development of photogrammetry. Taylor also made free use of the idea of associating infinitely distant … [Click Below for Full Description]
