Nelson, Robert.
A. & G. Way, prs. [with] A poem in memory of Robert Nelson Esquire. London: Pr. by Geo. James for Richard Smith, at Bishop Beveridge's-Head, 1715. 8vo. 21, [3] pp. First edition: Nelson, a philanthropist and popular religious writer, reminds the wealthy and well bred of their charitable obligations as Christians. After exhorting the rich to consider their salvation, Nelson solicits their support for such endeavors as building churches, funding the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, maintaining poor clergy and their families, founding seminaries and schools, relieving prisoners, and establishing houses for the improvement of ladies (both proper and fallen). The appendix provides texts of various proposals as well as statistics on numbers of residents in hospitals and schools. The frontispiece portrait of Nelson was engraved by George Vertue after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. The volume also includes all publisher's advertisements as well as the rather uncommon Poem in Memory of Robert Nelson Esquire. => This was produced to be a handsome work, printed in large type on good paper with wide margins -- the better to appeal to a "quality" audience?

Volume 1 of a practical three-volume manual composed for young aristocrats, introducing them to science and the applied arts. The present edition consists of four parts which were also published separately and have separate title-pages. Apart from the description of an army and its organization, featured topics include the building of fortresses, bridges and ships, as well as issues of architecture more generally, garden architecture, sculpture, art, cartography and ships' flags. The plates illustrate these themes, in particular visualizing the chapters on construction and the ensigns presented. The illustrations within the text relate to navigation and exhibit, among other things, constellations and a compass. - Frontispiece, half-title and seven additional plates are supplied in photocopy. Paper somewhat browned. All title-pages show slight edge defects from missing page markers; three modern markers have been added. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his stamped and signed ownership, dated 1979, to front pastedown. Graesse VI, 132. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Very interesting 2 volume Bible profusely illustrated with around 100 engravings which is both unusual and rare as Bibles of this period and before are rarely illustrated and printed in Oxford in 1715 This is one of the earliest Bibles which has dates in it starting at 4004 BC This Bible is often found as a single volume and not illustrated this is Herbert 935 which mentions a copy in the British Library is illustrated as this one is As it has so many engravings it was bound in 2 volumes, and both in fine binding though the 2nd volume has been rebacked but preserving the original red tooled leather gold boards and all pages have gold leaf All pages are further more red-ruled which suggest whoever this Bible was originally bound for must spent quite a bit of money to get such a nice copy It is complete though pagination is a little odd, I will explain why this is a good clean copy with spotting due to age and engravings are quite fine are browned and occasionally spotted The OT is in one volume starting with the General Tile 1 page preliminary followed by engraving of creation then the text I would like to include a lot more pics but with only 12 allowed this is the best I can do sorry With all the engravings this makes for quite a thick and heavy volume that weights in at almost 7lb The 2nd volume which is the one that has been rebacked suggest it had a lot more use as this is where the pagination gets a little odd You would think it would go right into the NT text this does not,it starts off with a complete book of common prayer dated 1715 it has an interesting engraving of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAXTON, Christopher.
London: George Willdey, c.1715. Original outline colour. 410 x 540mm. A scarce map of South East England, depictng Surrey, Sussex, Kent and, despite not being listed in the English title, Middlesex. The map first appeared in Saxton's atlas of England and Wales published 1579, the first county atlas. The plate has a long and interesting history. It was engraved by Remigius Hogenberg (c.1536-c.1588), older brother of Frans (engraver of the Ortelius atlas and the Braun & Hogenberg townplans), when the pair were taking refuge in England from the religious turmoil in the southern Netherlands. When John Speed copied most of Saxton's maps for his 'Theatre' atlas of 1611, he decided to use individual maps of these counties by John Norden instead. Superceded by Speed, Saxton's plates lay unused until 1645, when William Web published a new edition, with this map only updated with the arms of Charles I and the date 1642. After a 'ghost' edition of c.1665, the next edition was published by Philip Lea (c.1689), when the English title, the hundreds and symbols (crosses, crowns & mitres) were added. A second Lea edition (c.1693) saw the addition of Ogilby's roads, five armorials and Lea's address added under the original Latin title. Willdey was the next publisher, leaving Lea's details but adding his own along the bottom edge, as this example. A final edition of the atlas was published by Thomas Jefferys in 1749, 170 years after the first edition! [Attributes: First Edition]

Petronio, Riccardo.
1715. 8vo. 8 pp. With woodcut device on title page. Wrappers. An appeal, written in verse, to all religious orders and Christian laymen to take arms against the Ottomans. Apparently an early product of the Turkish-Venetian War of 1714-18, in which the new Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha re-conquered Morea (the Peloponnesus) from the Venetians, who had held the peninsula since 1699. A different version (kept at the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana in Vicenza), published by Giovanni Berno "in Venetia, Bassano, & in Verona", is dated 1715; this date of publication is also supported by the mention of Pope Clement XI (1700-21). However, the Marciana in Venice keeps an earlier publication of the same work produced for the Venetian Alessandro Cortesi, bearing the date 1663. Yet another, undated version in the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova bears the imprint "In Venezia, per Domenico Lovisa à Rialto". No other copy with Remondini's imprint is known. - Some browning and waterstaining; old pagination in manuscript and stamped (apparently removed from an old collection).

1715. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future." ― Francisco de Quevedo Francisco de Quevedo was one of the most well-known Spanish authors of the early 17th-century. He is most remembered for his satirical 'dream' poetry in which he writes himself into his story. 'Dreams' is a collections of five visions in which Quevedo witnesses the Day of Judgment and sees visions of hell, demons and devils, evil spirits being exorcised, and more experiences of the occult. The satire came in the form of Quevedo seeing various recognizable groups of people in hell including lawyers, astrologers, innkeepers, Protestants, accountants, Jews, physicians, and ...women. This 1715 English edition was translated and edited by Roger l'Estrange and published by Sare. [Attributes: First Edition]
