Quakers]
[London, 1715. Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Moderate toning and foxing. Very good. In 1696, after experiencing decades of exclusion and imprisonment for conscientiously refusing to take loyalty and court oaths, Parliament granted Quakers the right to take a "solemn affirmation" in legal situations in place of an actual oath. Over the next two decades numerous Quakers objected to the invocation of God's name in the official affirmation and refused it as they had the oath. In 1715 a bill was under consideration in Parliament to renew indefinitely the Quakers' right to the affirmation. The Quaker authors of the present petition support the bill, but ask that it be amended with a revised affirmation that does not include the name of God. ESTC lists copies at four institutions: British Library, Library of the Religious Society of Friends, National Library of Scotland, and Oxford. SMITH, FRIENDS' BOOKS II, p.265 (listing its imprint at "about 1721").

Bugg, Francis]
[London, 1715. Broadsheet, 14 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches. [2]pp. including printed docket title. Printed in two columns. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of lower inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Mild foxing. Very good. A scarce and highly informative letter to Parliament offering a critical history of the Quakers' "solemn affirmation." In 1696, after experiencing decades of exclusion and imprisonment for conscientiously refusing to take loyalty and court oaths, Quakers were granted the right by Parliament to take a "solemn affirmation" in legal situations in place of an actual oath. Over the next two decades many Quakers continued to object over the use of God's name in the affirmation, and various non- Quakers continued to express their resentment over the entire matter. In 1715 a bill was under consideration in Parliament to renew indefinitely the Quakers' right to the affirmation. The author of this document, Francis Bugg, recommends against passing it "Without a Universal Obligation upon them.without a Penalty upon every Quaker that shall neglect or refuse to take it in due Form," pointing to hypocrisy and disingenuousness he has perceived among that community. Bugg (1640-1724?) was a Quaker apostate who published numerous writings against Quakerism from about 1680 through the 1720s. Dated May 5, 1715, and signed in print by F. Bugg. Not listed in Joseph Smith's BIBLIOTECA ANTI-QUAKERIANA or A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF FRIENDS' BOOKS. ESTC lists copies at three institutions: the British Library, the Library of the Religious Society … [Click Below for Full Description]

He presented the clinical manifestations associated with these diseases, and described one of the first cases of aortic regurgitation. Vieussens also discussed "the structure of the internal surface of the right ventricle." He provided a detailed description of the structural and functional anatomy of the tricuspid and pulmonic valves (pp. 98-101; plates 10 & 11). Vieussens also provided the first comprehensive description of mitral stenosis (pp 101-106; plates 12 & 13). (This note was adapted from information provided by Farzan Filsoufi.)" Ferree, Isaac, Jacob Ferree, et al
1715. The Ferree family was an important Western Pennsylvania family of landholders, gunpowder and long rifle manufacturers; Isaac Ferree (1715-1782) was the first significant gunpowder producer west of the Alleghenies. Madam Mary Ferree and her husband Daniel under a charter from William Penn and Queen Anne, were able to purchase 2500 acres of land in Lancaster County, PA in 1712. Daniel and Madam's oldest son, Philip, had nine children, the oldest of which was Isaac, the future gunpowder maker. His oldest son was named Jacob (1750-1807), who took up his father's trade and became a gun and gunpowder manufacturer. Jacob married twice, and had 14 children. He bought property in Allegheny County (near Large, PA) in the late 1790s and set up a powder works and gun shop. But land title disputes arising from the formal establishment of the nearby Mason and Dixon Line nullified Jacob Ferree's claim to that property, and so he bought land in present-day Coraopolis and nearby Moon Township from Jeremiah and Zedok Wright, and finalized the deal by 1804. Since then, generations of Ferrees lived in that area along the Ohio River west of Pittsburgh. We acquired a small archive of letters and documents relating to the Ferree family, including from a sister of Jacob who settled in Fayette County, Kentucky and others who went as far afield as Louisiana and Florida. The Ferrees also had considerable land holdings in Scott County, Kentucky and in Rowan County, North Carolina, and those tracts were the subject of concern among the siblings as to their management and disposition. We have put … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE FERRIOL AMBASSADEUR DU ROY A LA PORTE et gravées en 1712 et 1713 par les soins de MR. LE HAY A PARIS Imprimerie de Jacques Collombat 1715 Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes nations du Levant (A Collection of One Hundred Engravings Representing the Various Nations of the Levant). Jean-Baptiste Vanmour went to Paris in 1699 and was noticed by Marquis Charles de Ferriol, who was appointed the king's special ambassador to Istanbul; the same year, he accompanied the Marquis to Istanbul. Ferriol commissioned the artist, who said he wanted to "learn everything about the customs and traditions of the Turks," to make drawings depicting Ottoman officials and the characters of various nations. Vanmour worked on this comprehensive project between 1707 and 1708. After the ambassador returned to Paris in 1711, he ordered engravings based on these drawings. Prepared by a team including G.J.B. Scottin, P. Simoneau fils, and J. Haussard, the one hundred engravings were published as an album by an engineer called Jacques le Hay. Known as the Ferriol Collection (Recueil Ferriol), this album underwent three printings between 1712 and 1715. Even though there are certain slight differences between the printings, all of them depicted Ottoman characters in their various costumes in a hierarchical order, starting with the Sultan; in addition, the scores of Sama music, a descript … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kaibara, Ekiken
Nagata Chobe Shotoku 5 [1715], Kyoto. The illustrated part of `Yamato Honzo`, a set of books on Japanese plants, medicinal herbs, fish, and birds, compiled by the Edo period`s greatest natural history scholar, Ekiken (also known as Ekken or Atsunobu). `Yamato Honzo` was published from 1709 to 1715 in 21 volumes. Our volume, `Yamato Honzo Shohinzu`, is the three illustrated volumes of `Yamato Honzo` bound in one. Before western textbooks on biology and agriculture were introduced to Japan in the Meiji period, Yamato Honzo` was the highest authority on the two subjects. The author, Kaibara Ekiken (1630_1714), was a famous Japanese botanist, philosopher, and Neo-Confucianist who did much to advance Japanese botanical and natural history study, and who Japanologist Philipp Franz von Siebold referred to as the "Aristotle of Japan". Many neat hand-written notes (mostly corrections to errors in the original text) appear throughout this particular copy, and are assumed to be from the late Edo period. The complete illustrated part of `Yamato Honzo`, replete with black and white woodcuts of plants, fish, and birds. Re-bound as three volumes in one. Wear and abrasion to wrappers, brush and ink notes to text-block foot and spine. Lacks title slip. One small wormhole throughout the book. Many neat contemporary hand-written notes and corrections to text. Very good. 1 v. [1], 85 leaves. Text in Japanese. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
