GRILL, Jan.
STCN (5 copies); not in Hoover; Kress. Practical guide to the calculation of the value of gold and silver of any purity, intended for merchants, mint masters and others who deal with precious metals. The author notes that there is "now" a great deal of low grade gold and silver on the market (below 20 carat and 10 penningen respectively, i.e. below 83 1/3 %), and that previously published guides did not cover these in a convenient manner. He therefore first explains how these metals are weighed in the Netherlands, presenting the units of weight and their relations, and gives instructions for using the tables, with examples. Once one has weighed the gold or silver and assayed it to give the purity in carats/mark or penningen/mark respectively, the tables on pp. 1-223 and 225-395 tell the weight of fine metal in a given weight of impure metal. Once one knows the weight of fine gold or silver, one can look up its value in guilders in the tables on pp. 224 and 396-447. Grill was himself an assayer. In 1715 he published his tables for gold alone, also sold by Van Eyl, and the present tables for gold and silver probably followed soon after. The heaviest weight listed for both gold and silver is 100 marks (so that the tables could be used without multiplication for weights up to 200 marks), but for silver in four degrees of purity, a contemporary owner has inserted manuscript tables for weights up to4000 marks. In very good condition. A rare and valuable window into trade in precious metals in the early 18th-century Netherlands.

(fautes à corriger) + 628 pp. (rousseurs éparses). Bel exemplaire. Petronio, Riccardo
Venice & Bassano, Giovanni Antonio Remondini, [ca. 8vo. 8 pp. With woodcut device on title page. Wrappers. An appeal, written in verse, to all religious orders and Christian laymen to take arms against the Ottomans. Apparently an early product of the Turkish-Venetian War of 1714-18, in which the new Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha re-conquered Morea (the Peloponnesus) from the Venetians, who had held the peninsula since 1699. A different version (kept at the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana in Vicenza), published by Giovanni Berno "in Venetia, Bassano, & in Verona", is dated 1715; this date of publication is also supported by the mention of Pope Clement XI (1700-21). However, the Marciana in Venice keeps an earlier publication of the same work produced for the Venetian Alessandro Cortesi, bearing the date 1663. Yet another, undated version in the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova bears the imprint "In Venezia, per Domenico Lovisa à Rialto". No other copy with Remondini's imprint is known. - Some browning and waterstaining; old pagination in manuscript and stamped (apparently removed from an old collection).

TORRICELLI, Evangelista.
FIRST EDITION. Torricelli (1608-1647), Galileo's most promising pupil, succeeded him as professor of mathematics at Florence. The present volume, published nearly seventy years after his death, contains the lectures he gave to the Accademia Crusca, and on other occasions. They deal with problems of mechanics, physics, meteorology, and military architecture, including also an oration in praise of mathematics. From the point of view of physics, the lectures on the force of impact and on wind are of particular interest. In the former he said that he was reporting ideas expressed by Galileo in their informal conversations, and there is no lack of original observations. In the lecture on wind Torricelli advanced the modern theory that winds are products of differences of air temperature (cf. Wolf, History of Science, I, p. 316). The 50-page introduction by the editor, Tommaso Bonaventura, is important for Torricelli's life and works. It includes the two letters by Torricelli to Michelangelo Ricci of June 11th and 28th 1644, in which he described his invention of the mercury barometer, one of the most important discoveries in the whole history of physics, with a woodcut showing Torricelli's barometer.Dibner, Heralds of Science, 149. Sparrow, Milestones of Science, 190. Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1643. D.S.B., XIII, pp. 437-439. Cinti 169, reproducing the title-page. Norman catalogue 2088.

FORD, Richard.
London: George Willdey, c.1715. 485 x 570mm. Binding folds flattened, some creasing upper left. An extremely influencial map of Barbados, orientated with north to the right, with four inset town plans ('Bridge Toun', 'Ostines Toun', 'Hale Toun', and, without a border in the sea, 'Speights Toun'. Bottom right, within a border featuring allegorical figures of Britannia & Ceres and the arms of George I, is 'A New Description of the Island of Barbados'. Other decorations include a compass rose, a scale cartouche featuring cherubs and carouches for the publisher's inscription and key. On the map the owner of each plantaion is named and there are depictions of sugarcane, pineapples, 'bennawno' (banana trees, Indian corn, a pawpaw, and apparently cotton plants and palm trees. The map was surveyed by Richard Ford (or Forde) and first published c.1674 by London publishers John Overton, Robert Morden, William Berry, and Thomas Pask. Soon afterwards the plate was bought by Philip Lea and John Seller. Despite the lifespan of the plate this is a very scarce map.

Amsterdam?: In a fully restored state. Original heavy wooden boards rebacked with new leather spine, much of the old spine replaced on top. Boards scuffed as seen in the photos, but remarkable for their size and weight. Lacking brass clasps. Old (1848) name inscription on front free endpaper. Small repairs to page edges at the front (1) and at the back (3). The fragile maps are generally in a good clean condition. Some browning to the margin edges, occasionally very small tears at the folds (the paper is very thin). The last map, the Travels of St Paul, a little ragged at the bottom margin. The text pages are inevitably a little browned, with some marks and foxing, but it is all generally in a good, tight condition. A fine professionally restored example. A magnificent old Bible, published in 1715, with 6 maps of some significance by Joseph Moxon and Nicolaus Visscher. The text contains: 1) "The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of England: Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in Churches. Printed in the Year, MDCCXV." CARNOT, Lazare.
, . . Brunet VI, col. 513; Lepage, "French fortifications, 1715-1815", pp. 143-149; Lloyd, "Vauban, Montalembert, Carnot", pp. 182-185. Third edition of an influential manual on fortification, written for use at the military academy at Metz. After the fall of the "impregnable" fortress of Vlissingen to British troops in 1809, emperor Napoleon ordered Carnot to write a treatise on how fortifications could be improved for better defence. Carnot was a staunch follower of the controversial ideas of the Marquis de Montalembert (1714-1800), who criticized the traditional system of bastions and instead proposed longer walls which could be equipped with many more guns, protected by casemates. Carnot was a strong believer in the use of mortar fire ("vertical fire") and often used the terms "rain" and "storm" to denote the abundance of munitions that would come down on the attacker. "He endeavored to prove mathematically that the discharge of these mortars would in due course kill off the whole of the besieging force" (Lepage). Lazare Carnot (1753-1823) was a politician and mathematician and the most important administrator during the French Revolution, introducing mass conscription, during which he was nicknamed the "organizer of victory". With library stamp and owner's inscription. Spine worn with the edges strengthened with gold-coloured tape. Slightly browned and spotted throughout with a water stain in the lower margin, notably in the second half of the book; a fair copy.

MOLL, Herman
London,: Herman Moll,, [? 1715].. A Map of the West-Indies or the Islands of America in the North Sea; with ye adjacent Countries; explaining what belongs to Spain, England, France and Holland &c. also ye Trade Winds, and ye several Tracts made by ye Galeons and Flota from place to place. According to ye newest and most exact observations, by Hermann Moll, Geographer. Engraved map with contemporary colour. The early eighteenth century saw a resurgence in piracy in the Caribbean as the War of the Spanish Succession drew to a close, leaving the sailors and privateers who had fought in the West Indies free to concentrate on the growing cross-Atlantic trade. British privateers were at the forefront, especially after Britain won the asiento, the contract to supply slaves to Spanish colonies in the Americas. The slave trade created a cross-Atlantic triangle: goods were carried from Europe to Africa, slaves from Africa to the Americas, and cash crops like sugar from the Americas to Europe. Furthermore, the Spanish bullion trade continued to provide rich pickings for pirates. The detailed information on Spanish treasure routes, local geography and sailing conditions was almost certainly contributed by William Dampier and Woodes Rogers, two English buccaneers who were associates of Moll and part of the same intellectual circle, which also included Daniel Defoe and John Locke. William Dampier was the first Englishman to explore Australia, and the first to circumnavigate the world three times. Woodes Rogers hired Dampier as chief pilot for the ship he captained during a privateerin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Emanuel Ergas, London 1715 in Hebrew against Shabbatean Shabbatean Nehemiah Hayon תוכחת מגולה והצד נחש - Only Edition - Marranos - anti-Shabbatean Physical Description.... Only edition, 62 ff., octavo, light age staining, wide margins. A very good copy bound in modern quarter leather and marbled paper over boards.... Detail Description; Polemic against the Shabbatean Nehemiah Hayon by R. Joseph b. Emanuel Ergas (1685-1730), rabbi, kabbalist, and author of books on halakhic and kabbalistic matters. R. Ergas, who was of Marrano descent, was born in Leghorn. The headdress of a knight engraved on his tomb in Leghorn perhaps indicates descent from a noble Spanish family. R. Samuel of Fez was his teacher of halakhah and R. Benjamin ha-Kohen Vitale of Reggio taught him Kabbalah. As a young man, he traveled throughout Italy and preached public sermons, urging repentance. For a while he stayed in Pisa where he founded a yeshivah, Neveh Shalom. Later, he was appointed rabbi in Leghorn, and remained there until his death. R. Ergas became famous for his pamphlet Tokhahat Megullah, the polemic against the Shabbatean Nehemiah Hayon, and an addition to it called Ha-Zad Nahash (London, 1715). A selection of his responsa was published by his disciple R. Malachi Ha-Kohen as Divrei Yosef (Leghorn, 1742). The publisher's introduction mentions several piyyutim written by R. Ergas. R. Ergas was an enthusiastic believer in the importance and sanctity of the Kabbalah in gener … [Click Below for Full Description]
