Torti, Francesco.
Typis Bertholomaei Soliani, 1715. Torti, a professor in the University of Modena, was the first to systematically study => the effect of cinchona in the treatment of malaria. He recommended the use of the drug for a period of eight days beyond the febrile stage of malaria and in 1712 published Therapeutice specialis ad febres quasdam perniciosas, inopinatò, ac repentè lethales, una verò china china, peculiari methodo ministrata, sanabiles, which pushed that advice and seriously displeased his senior colleague Bernardino Ramazzini, who in 1714 took Torti to task in his De abusu chinae chinae. The present work is Torti's reply to Ramazzini's De abusu chinae chinae. Needless to say the Modena University colleagues and friends were soon erstwhile friends.

Weigel, C. W.
Nürnberg, J. C. Weigel, ca. 1715. Oblong folio (16.8 x 27.8 cm). Engraved title page and 11 engraved plates. Later blind blue paper-covered boards. A very rare and beautifully executed suite of 12 illustrations of "grim-snatching" animals, partly based on earlier works by Paulus Potter and others. Includes lions, jaguars, hyenas, bears, and a wolf. The lions are especially grim indeed. Several lions are after Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640); in particular, the engravings by the Dutch artist Abraham Blooteling (1640-1690) of Rubens' Daniel in the Lion's Den, and other works. The engraver, Johann Christoph Weigel (1661-1725), was active in Neurenberg, publishing atlases, including an Atlas portalis, and books on various subjects ranging from sundials to musical instruments. Title page rather spotted, with a weak damp stain in the top right margin; one other plate also lightly foxed, the others with an occasional spot or marginal smudge, but generally clean. We found no references in any of the larger bibliographies. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1715. Ten separate works in twelve volumes, five by the Tory philosopher Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, the others by various of his critics and political contemporaries. The collection includes three of Bolingbroke's most notable works, his Letter to Sir William Windham, Dissertation upon Parties, and The Patriot King. A prominent English politician and preeminent orator of the eighteenth century, Bolingbroke lost his titles, properties, and conventional political offices after supporting the failed Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Though partially restored in 1723, he was barred from reentering the House of Lords, and thus forced to content himself with publishing thinly veiled pseudonymous tracts through The Craftsman, which has been called "the most brilliant pieces of journalism between the time of the 'Examiner' and Junius" (DNB XVII, 629). He also gave voice to his positions through his disciple William Wyndham in the House of Commons, who was greatly supported by Bolingbroke's grasp of international politics and rhetoric. Bolingbroke often shied away from disseminating his written works under his own name, a habit which generally continued up to his death, after which many of his works appeared for the first time under his name. With a First Edition of his Letter to Sir William Windham, which is described as "his most interesting autobiographical document. It gives full details of his conduct as the Pretender's minister, and appears to be a frank statement of his position." (ibid. 627). Bolingbroke wrote in 1733-1734 a series of letters attacking his political … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berengario da Carpi, Jacobo (Giacomo)
Lugduni Batavorum : Apud vid. & fil. Corn. Boutesteyn, 1715, kl.8°, (4), 355, (4) pp., 9 Kupferstichtafeln, Halbledereinband der Zeit; St.a.Tit.; minimal gebräuntes, feines Exemplar. Third edition, third issue of the first separate treatise on head wounds, and their surgical treatment. The work originated in a dispute between Berengario and some other physicians over the treatment of Lorenzo de Medici, who had suffered a skull fracture in a battle. Berengario described several types of skull fractures and grouped the resulting lesions according to their symptoms, citing the relation between location and neurological effect. The book also discussed apoplexy, meningitis and paralysis. He also discussed prognosis, diagnosis and treatment, described the technique of craniotomy and provided detailed illustrations of contemporary neurosurgical instruments. "The first Edition of the De Fractura Caluae was published by Hieronymus de Benedictis (Girolamo dei Benedetti) at Bologna in December, 1518, in a quarto volume of 105 folios, of which eight copies at least are extant. The History and Special Collections Division of the Biomedical Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, has recently acquired another copy. Somewhere between 1518 and 1535 another edition appeared of which one copy exists in Bologna. Other editions followed: Venice, 1535; Leiden, 1629,1651,1715,1728. The last three are reprints of the 1629 edition. Such popularity extending through at least two centuries indicates the value which later generations placed upon the book. It is certainly the most import … [Click Below for Full Description]

An important map, published in the First Edition of Bernard's 'Recueil de Voiages Au Nord'. Reland ignored previous European maps, instead relying on a Japanese model, with the result that many of the fictitious places disappear. All sixty-six provinces are named in Roman and Sino-Japanese characters (the first Western map to do so). The map has an inset of Nagasaki and armorials of the Emperor and his shoguns. This influential map was later copied by Ottens, Chatelain and Seutter. HUBBARD: 69. [Attributes: First Edition]

Item #30125 Pope, one of the leading literary figures of early 18th C England, enjoyed social success as well, and could count among his friends such great literary figures as Swift, Gay, and Congreve and 'saw much aristocratic society.' Of his character, the D.N.B. comments 'there is, in fact, no more difficult subject for biography, especially in a compressed form.... The truest statement seems to be that he was at bottom, as he represents himself in the epistle to Arbuthnot, a man of really fine nature, affectionate, generous, and independent; unfortunately, the better nature was perverted by the morbid vanity and excessive irritability which led him into his multitudinous subterfuges.' It has been commented that Pope could 'hardly drink tea without a stratagem.' His devotion to literature was unremitting, 'he might have rivalled Chaucer in one century, and Wordsworth in another. As it was, his poetry is the essence of the first half of the eighteenth century.' "I … [Click Below for Full Description]

SENEX, John.
London: Sexex, c.1715. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 970 x 655mm. Some restoration, as normal on these large maps. A large scale map of South America, dedicated 'To Edmund Halley, LLD, Savilian Professor of Geometry in Oxford, Fellow of ye Royal Society, This Map Corrected from his own Discoveries, In grateful acknowledgment of his ready assistance to Encourage this design, is humbly dedicated by his oblig.d Serv.t C. Price'. Halley had made two voyages to the South Atlantic to investigate the magnetic variation of the compass, publishing a chart on his return. The dedication suggests that he had a hand in preparing this map. Of interest is a little note above the title cartouche: 'In this icy sea there are many animals which are half fish, half fowl. There have a neck like a swan which they often thrust above the water for Air the rest is allways under water'. This is apparently an early reference to penguins. Senex originally published a version of this map together with Charles Price and John Maxwell in 1708. After this partnership broke down in 1711 Price retained the original plate, forcing Senex to engrave a new version for his English Atlas. The title and dedication to Halley are identical.

[Withall, Benjamin]
[London, 1715. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. A rare political leaflet alleging frauds and abuses by the British Board of Ordnance in 1715, George I's first full year as king. The author, engineer Benjamin Withall, shows that the Office of Ordnance's estimate for land service for 1715, a year of peace, is more than triple that of 1714, the final year of the War of the Spanish Succession. Arguing that the budget should not be much more than one-fifth the present estimate of 170,991, Withall petitions Parliament to allow him to interrogate members of the Board regarding their "strange" and "marvellous" calculation. This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC lists three copies, at the Goldsmiths' Company, University of London, and Oxford. HANSON 2176.

[War of the Spanish Succession]
[London, 1715. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. A rare political leaflet petitioning Parliament for relief of warrant officers who had fought in the recent War of the Spanish Succession. In March 1715 the House of Commons ordered that a list of all the regimental and warrant officers be drawn up, but by the time this document was printed, numerous warrant officers had not been entered into the list and rumors had begun to circulate that they would therefore not be receiving expected compensation for their service. "Besides, the Nature of several of the Warrant Officers Posts was such, as they could not be put on a Regimental List, viz. Directors of Hospitals, Commissaries, Officers who have lost their Limbs, and many other Officers, whose particular Hardships, Pretensions, and Disappointments are more at large set forth and specify'd in their several Warrants. So that their Condition is very deplorable." This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. [PRESS CENSORSHIP]
1715. [History] ~ [PRESS CENSORSHIP] An attempt towards a coalition of English Protestants, From the Weakness of the Pretensions of the several parties, for being either Better Christians, or Better Subjects, upon any Principles wherein they differ. To which is added, Reasons for Restraining the licentiousness of the Pulpit and Press London. Printed, and Sold by J. Roberts, 1715. 8vo. 40pp. Recent blue cloth, lettered in gilt. Extremities discoloured, a trifle rubbed and marked. Internally clean and crisp. The sole edition of an anonymous impassioned admonition, sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe (1660?-1731), of the harmful division of the established Church and the Dissenters that argues for reconciliation between both parties for the betterment of the nation. The author calls for an end to the 'Political Preaching' of the clergy and for the 'restraint' of the 'licentiousness of the Press' which fuels their statements and heightens religious estrangement; 'As Political Preaching kindles the Flame, so Political Papers serve to keep the Fire still burning...When the Parson has done his Argument in the Pulpit, down it is handed to the Coffee-House, from thence into private Families, and so on, 'till the whole Nation is inflam'd'. Argumentative Papers, like wild Fire, are apt to take hold on weak Heads, who generally espouse such Papers as are of their own Party, without hearing what the other Side has to say.' (NAUNDORFF, Egid.)
Stralsund, junii 1715. 8:o. Dubbelsidigt titelblad,+ 3-116 s. Titelbladet uppfodrat.
