[LE HAY] - Charles de FERRIOL (1652-1722)
Paris, 1715. Folio. (19 3/4 x 13 inches). Engraved title, 102 engraved plates (comprising 100 numbered plates and 2 unnumbered, 3 double-page), one leaf of engraved music. Contemporary red morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (expert restoration to the joints) Provenance: Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (armorial bookplate on verso of the title) A lovely copy of Le Hay and Ferriol's famous work depicting the costume of the Levant: this copy bound in 18th century red morocco. The plates are based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis de Ferriol. In 1707, Ferriol commissioned Jean Baptiste van Mour to paint one hundred pictures of different officials and races in their costumes: the chief eunuch; a Turkish man cutting himself to show his love for his mistress; a Jewish woman taking goods to Turkish harems; a Greek bride; a Turkish women at leisure; Albanians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Persians and Arabs. When the paintings were complete, Ferriol helped le Hay to publish the present engravings of the pictures. Le Hay's work was an instant success and the plates quickly became the principal source of turqueries for artists and publishers throughout Europe. In recognition of van Mour's talents, he was granted the unique post of `Peintre ordinaire du Roi en Levant' in 1725. Atabey 429; Blackmer 591; Colas 1819-20; Brunet III, 947-8; Cohen-de Ricci 392l; Lipperheide 413, 414.

TORRICELLI, Evangelista/BONAVENTURI, Tommasso, ed.
Florence Jacopo Guiducci & Santo Franchi 1715. Large 4to., 49, (1) pp., (1) f., 96 ff., with 1 engraved author portrait signed Pietro Anichini, with 3 woodcut illustrations in the text. "Imprimatur" leaf misbound following preliminaries. Bound in contemporary cartonnage, laid down. Scattered waterstaining, upper corners of later leaves worn; nonetheless, generally very good, with portrait very fresh. First edition of 12 collected lectures composed for the Academia della Crusca, posthumously published; "an important summary of Torricelli’s theories," including reprints of his important letters on the barometer. Torricelli (1608-47) was Galileo’s pupil and secretary, succeeding him as professor of mathematics at Florence. Calling himself "a Galileist by profession and sect," Torricelli was the first in Rome to make a careful study of Galileo’s Dialogo. The extensive preface reprints the two letters to Michelangelo Ricci in which Torricelli discusses atmospheric pressure and reports on the 1643 research that led to the invention of the barometer. "His experiments provide the first strong refutation of the generally held view of the impossibility of a vacuum" (Parkinson, Breakthroughs. See further for a more detailed account of the barometric experiments). "From the point of view of physics, the lectures on the force and impact and on wind are of particular interest. In the former he said that he was reporting ideas expressed by Galileo in their informal conversations, and there is no lack of original observations " (DSB XIII.438-39). Colin Campbell
A wonderfully detailed architectural engraving by Colin Campbell  from his breathtaking book Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect, Containing the Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the Regular  Buildings Both Publick and Private in Great Britain... , which was published in London in 1715-1767. Overall this print measures 21.5"x18".Colin Campbell was a Scottish-born architect who published the single most influential work of architecture published in the Georgian era. As the title suggests, the work focuses upon the writings of the Roman architectural author, Vitruvius, and testifies to Campbell's outright rejection of the French influence upon British architecture, so prevalent during the reign of the late Stuart monarchs.  The book champions the classical purity of line which pervaded the work of the seventeenth-century English court architect, Inigo Jones and the sixteenth-century Italian architect, Andrea Palladio, both considered exemplars of the style by Campbell. However, the book also represents the rise of the nobility and professional designer as arbiters of fashion, a facet of British culture previously dominated by royalty.  The British countryside, as we know it today, was the creation of the Georgian period, and the result of the  pursuit of profit and pleasure.  The nobility now enjoyed new found wealth largely due to the Seven Years? War when the Crown had given land to loyal supporters.  This land was mainly concentrated in large estates and its owners either sat in the House of Commons or knew people who did.  Thus, the land enclosure acts, which … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Despite the modest size of his output, comprising six collections of instrumental music and a handful of other authentic works, and its virtual restriction to three genres - solo sonata, trio sonata and concerto - Corelli exercised an unparalleled influence during his lifetime and for a long time afterwards. This influence, which affected form, style and instrumental technique in equal measure, was most closely felt in Italy, and in particular in Rome, where he settled in early manhood, but soon spread beyond local and national confines to become a European phenomenon. As a violinist, teacher of the violin and director of instrumental ensembles Corelli imposed standards of discipline that were unusually strict for their period and helped to lay the groundwork for further progress along the same lines during the 18th century. To Corelli belong equally the distinctions of being … [Click Below for Full Description]

DEMOSTHÉNÊS - DEMOSTHÈNE) DEMOSTENE.
Stefano Monti 1715 - Venise, Stefano Monti, 1715. MOLL, Herman
London., [1715]. to The Right Honourable Charles, Earl of Sunderland.....one of Her Majesties Principal Secretaries of State.... 2 sheets joined. Size: 600 x 975 mm. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes. Very good condition. A large scale and very handsome early eighteenth century map of South America by the highly regarded and prolific cartographer; Herman Moll. Moll was a German émigré, who settled in London around 1680. His map of South America provides a surprising wealth of knowledge, comment and detail, with the notable exceptions of Amazonia, of Patagonia and the interior of Brazil which he leaves mostly blank. He embellishes his central map with two large and highly decorative cartouches - one of the Spanish sliver mines of Potosi in Peru, the other being the interesting title cartouche that features erupting volcanoes, three native inhabitants, one of whom is wealthy, plus numerous ingots of gold. There is also an elaborate baroque style dedication to The Earl of Sunderland. The prevailing Trade Winds and the assorted islands that inhabit both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are shown prominently.

The truest statement seems to be that he was at bottom, as he represents himself in the epistle to Arbuthnot, a man of really fine nature, affectionate, generous, and independent; unfortunately, the better nature was perverted by the morbid vanity and excessive irritability which led him into his multitudinous subterfuges.' It has been commented that Pope could Ôhardly drink tea without a stratagem.Õ His devotion to literature was unremitting, 'he might have rivalled Chaucer in one century, and Wordsworth in another. Innsbruck, Jacob Christoph Wagner, 1715.. Titel mit Holzschnittbordüre. 34 nicht num. Bll. und 30 Kupfertafeln. Etwas späterer marmorierter Halbpergamentband. Folio..
Overall this print measures 21.5"x18", and is in good condition with some foxing/staining and creasing.Colin Campbell was a Scottish-born architect who published the single most influential work of architecture published in the Georgian era. The nobility now enjoyed new found wealth largely due to the Seven Years’ War when the Crown had given land to loyal supporters.  This land was mainly concentrated in large estates and its owners either sat in the House of Comm … [Click Below for Full Description]
