He was proficient in languages and an astronomer of some repute. His calendar (1717) served the London community until the 19th century as a guide for the Sabbath and festivals. His works indicate that he was fully aware of the religious currents and crosscurrents of his time, including *Spinozism, Deism (see conceptions of *God), and Shabbateanism. WAGNER (Gottfried) ].
"Carpenterius wrote surveys of celibate scholars. To these was added the disquisition on the marriage of a learned man by Mellemann who believes that there is no reason for learned man to fly from marriage. And indeed there is annexed the letter of Daniel Heinsius about wether and what sort of wife a learned man should marry. This argument weakens the case since it establishes such requirements of the wife, of the most extraordinary kind, and also so many, and such severe rules which will not meet with the women's compliance" (Holtzmüller). Brunissures caractéristiques des impressions allemandes de cette époque. Assez bon exemplaire. RISM L2715 (not distinguishing between issues). & & "Loeillet de Gant, as he styled himself on all his published compositions, went to Lyons in the service of the archbishop, Paul-François de Neufville de Villeroy, and died there at an early age - before 1729 and probably around 1720... His sonatas are in the Italian style of Corelli and are generally of the sonata da chiesa type... The bass parts are more independent than those of John Loeillet of London, not only in the fugal second movements, where they may play an equal part, but also in the slow movements, where they often have their own rhythmic patterns throughout the movement; his basses often start a movement with two or three bars solo before the recorder enters. Loeillet de Gant had a stronger contrapuntal sense than his two cousins; occasionally his fugal movements have clearly differentiated countersubjects but they lack the skill shown by many of his contemporaries. Unlike John Loeillet, Loeillet de Gant ornamented many of his slow movements in the French manner, with flouri … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOMANN, Johann Baptist (1663-1724)
Nuremberg: [circa 1715]. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. 19 3/4 x 23 1/4 inches. A highly decorative and historically important map of Virginia, the Carolinas and the mid-Atlantic. This very attractive map was devised as a propaganda tool, to showcase Virginia as a land of plenty to prospective German immigrants. Homann first printed this map in 1714, including it in his Atlas Novus. That year, Alexander Spotswood, the Lt. Governor of Virginia, founded Germanna, a colony for German immigrants on the banks of the Rapidan River, identified on the map as "Germantown / Teutsche Statt". English settlers had proven reticent to migrate to the colony's interior, leaving it vulnerable to French and native encroachment. Spotswood hoped that a wave of German immigration would act as a protective bulwark for Virginia, while also making him a fortune from related property speculation. While Virginia is geographically given the place of honour in the centre of the map, the art of persuasion is principally conveyed by the large title cartouche occupying the lower right of the map. Surrounding an open scallop shell, the iconography of Utopia is presented with blazing intensity. Natives, shown as "noble savages", in the manner of Theodore De Bry, offer their wares. Well- attired Europeans are shown enjoying a realm bursting with gold, kegs of libations, fish, produce and exotic animals. An opportunity to experience such a paradise must have appealed to Homann's intended audience. Importantly, while Virginia is the focus, the map embraces a vast portion of the easter … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORFÆUS, TORMOD.
Köpenhamn, H. C. Paulli, 1715. 8:o. (48),179,(13) s. Häftad i samtida ganska hårt nött marmorerat pappomslag. Oskuren. Arbetet rör den danska sagokungen "Rolf Krake", omnämnd i bl.a. "Beowulf".

Commelin, C.
Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), J. du Vivie, 1715. 4to (25.1 x 20.2 cm). [viii], 86 pp., with 33 engravings pasted on folded leaves (one double-sized). Rebacked contemporary half goatskin with original speckled boards and original hand-stamped endpapers. A very rare, important and well-illustrated book on exotic plants from - mainly - the Cape Province, most of which had not previously been described or illustrated. Written by the professional botanist Caspar Commelin (1668-1731). Most of the species figured are succulents & cacti. Contains the first depiction of the Geranium africanum, now one of the most popular cultivated plants in innumerable varieties. The first edition of 1703 is quite rare, but this 1715 edition may be even rarer. It is possible that this actually is a 1703 edition "updated" by the (new) publisher with only a new title page, as was often done in the 18th century. A slightly different paper for the title page supports this theory. A few marginal paper restorations. Original spine preserved, some expert repairs to boards. The plates on folding leaves according to the publisher's instructions on page 86. Contains an unsigned gathering between pp. 64 and 67 that is often missing. ADDED in the same volume is J. Schreber, Plantarum verticillatarum unilabiatarum genera et species. Lipsiae, S. Crusius, 1774. (viii), lxxv, (ii) pp., and one large folded engraved plate. Identical to the 1773 edition. A very good copy. Both publications are very rare. For the latter see Pritzel, 8399, 8400; Stafleu and Cowan, 11.131A, for the Commelin see Nissen BBI, 388; Pritzel, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAMPIER, William
Rouen,: Robert Machuel le jeune & Eustache Herault, 1715.. Five volumes, duodecimo, with a total of 34 engraved maps, coastal profiles and harbour plans (12 folding) and 32 plates (13 folding) including engraved title pages and frontispiece for volume I-III; two of the title-pages a little chipped at one corner; contemporary French mottled calf, banded spines richly gilt, crimson morocco labels, from the Villeneuve library with engraved bookplates to all volumes. Rare: an attractive set of the first collected edition of Dampier in any language to include the related accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood. Most of the maps, coastal profiles, and natural history plates are accurate copies of the English originals, but this edition is notable for the addition of a small series of newly engraved views (perhaps based on the Dutch edition Nieuwe reystogt rondom de werreld, published between 1698 and 1704).Dampier's 'style is clear and simple, making his writings almost classical. A precursor of the Enlightenment, he was not interested in marvels, but in examination and description of natural phenomena. Through his writings, Dampier made known the profitable possibilities in the Pacific' (Hill, describing the collected English edition). It is interesting that it was not until 1729, some fourteen years after the present edition, that the London publishers Knapton prepared their famous four-volume edition of the collected Dampier, which also included the accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood.Borba de Moraes noted that part of the edition was printed by Robert Machuel and part by Eustache H … [Click Below for Full Description]
