Commelin, C.
. Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), J. du Vivie, 1715. 4to (25.1 x 20.2 cm), 4 ll., 86 pp., with 33 engravings pasted on folded leaves (one double-sized). Rebacked contemporary half goatskin with original speckled boards and original hand-stamped flyleaves.* A very rare, important and well illustrated book on exotic plants from - mainly - the Cape Province, most of which had not been described or illustrated before. Written by the professional botanist Caspar Commelin (1668-1731). Most of the species figured are succulents & cacti. For the first time the Geranium Africanum is figured, now being perhaps the most popular cultivated plant in numerous varieties. The first edition of 1703 is quite rare. But this 1715 edition may be even rarer. It is possible that this actually is a 1703 edition "updated" by the (new) publisher with a new title page alone, as often done in the 18th century. A slightly different paper for the title page supports this theory. Several of the plates have been cleaned and some rather vague waterstaining in the bottom part of the text. New spine, some expert repairs to boards. The plates were pasted on folding leaves according to the publisher's instructions on p. [86]. The sometimes missing unsigned gathering between pp. 64 and 67 is present. ADDED in the same volume is J. Schreber, Plantarum verticillatatum unilabiatarum genera et species. Lipsiae, S. Crusius, 1774. 5 ll., LXXV pp., and one large folding engraving. Identical to the 1773 edition. Both publications are rare. For the latter see Pritzel, 8399, 8400; Stafleu and Cowan, 11.131A, for the Commelin … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Greenwood, Jonathan)
Lon., (1715).. b/w engravings. This is the first printed British Signal Book. “The year 1714 saw the issue of the first signal book. This curiously enough was a private venture of one Jonathan Greenwood... No doubt this duodecimo sized book was much more convenient than the folio sized Instructions. Each signal is represented by a drawing of a ship flying the flag or flags of the signal at the proper place, the purport being added underneath, a method at use in the French navy at least twenty years earlier... Apparently, although the Instructions were regarded as confidential the signals were not, as the work is described as, ‘designed to supply the Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions.’”- Perrin, British Flags, p. 163. The book consists of 72 leaves, all engraved, most containing two illustrations of ships or cannon, many with contemporary hand-coloring - 67 engraved illustrations in all. A&W 1890. It is a scarce book in the trade, particularly in good condition, as most copies were used hard. Worldcat shows only two libraries holding copies. The most recent copy in comparable condition to appear at auction sold for 3000 pounds in 2009. It is uncertain whether or not all copies have a frontispiece portrait. This one does not. It is in very good condition, bound in full period blind stamped calf. A wonderful survival.

Modern marble paper covered boards, blue cloth spine with paper title label. 8vo 7½'' x 5''. Containing 79 pages of text with embellished capital letter, header and tail-piece. Newspaper cuttings from The Times pasted to the rear paste downs, cracking between the title page and the first page of text, the paper is not foxed and has only marginal age toning to the edges. Charles II's father, King Charles I, was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War. Although the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II King of Great Britain and Ireland in Edinburgh on 6 February 1649, the English Parliament instead passed a statute that made any such proclamation unlawful. England entered the period known as the English Interregnum or the English Commonwealth, and the country was a de facto republic, led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe. Cromwell became virtual dictator of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Charles spent the next nine years in exile in France, the United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands. A political crisis that followed the death of Cromwell in 1658 resulted in the restoration of the monarchy, and Charles was invited to return to Bri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gikatilla, Joseph ben Abraham, 1248- c.1325 Gikatillia Yosef Yoseph. Delacrut, Mattathias (Mattathiah) ben Solomon,; active 16th century. Commentary by. Elijah ha-Levi, of Frankfurt, Notes by. Benjamin b. Elijah ha-levi, edited by
Zeligman Reis (Raiz, Rais), Offenbach, Germany, 1715. Shaar Ora, a work roughly contemporaneous with the publication of the Zohar, was written by the Spanish kabbalist Joseph Gikatilla towards the end of the 13th century. It has served countless generations of aspiring students as a systematic primer guide of Kabbalah, to the systematic study of the Sefiroth (Divine emanations) and their code names, with Malchuth (Kingdom) as the primary, and Keter (Crown) as the final Sefirah. It is an exposition of Kabbalistic symbolism and the designations of the Sephorith. Joseph Gikatilla (Chiquatilla) (1248- c.1325) was a disciple of the founder of the school of "Prophetic kabbalah," Abraham Abulafia, and a close colleague of Moses de Leon of Guadalajara (who publicized the Zohar). Gikatilla composed some of the most detailed, yet lucid, expositions of Kabblistic concepts. Indeed R. Chaim of Volozhin recommended it to his students as an important introduction to the arcane wisdom of Kabbalah. Gikatilla was the originator of the doctrine equating the infinite Ein Sof with the first of the Ten Sephiroth. Vinograd THESAURUS v. 2, page 10, Offenbach imprint number 13 (kabala). Very good modern full leather binding with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine. Remains of old marbled paper on the earlier binding are bound in. 116 leaves. Scan of the wrappers and of the leather boards is available upon request. This second edition is apparently much rarer than the first edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Having studied medicine at the University of Padua, Nieto functioned as dayyan, preacher and physician in Leghorn before going to London. He was proficient in languages and an astronomer of some repute. His calendar (1717) served the London community until the 19th century as a guide for the Sabbath and festivals. His works indicate that he was fully aware of the religious currents and crosscurrents of his time, including *Spinozism, Deism (see conceptions of *God), and Shabbateanism. "Carpenterius wrote surveys of celibate scholars. To these was added the disquisition on the marriage of a learned man by Mellemann who believes that there is no reason for learned man to fly from marriage. And indeed there is annexed the letter of Daniel Heinsius about wether and what sort of wife a learned man should marry. This argument weakens the case since it establishes such requirements of the wife, of the most extraordinary kind, and also so many, and such severe rules which will not meet with the women's compliance" (Holtzmüller). His sonatas are in the Italian style of Corelli and are generally of the sonata da chiesa type... The bass parts are more independent than those of John Loeillet of London, not only in the fugal second movements, where they may play an equal part, but also in the slow movements, where they often have their own rhythmic patterns throughout the movement; his basses often start a movement with two or three bars solo before the recorder enters. Loeillet de Gant had a stronger contrapuntal sense than his two cousins; occasionally his fugal movements have clearly differentiated countersubjects but they lack the skill shown by many of his contemporaries.
