[Fishing]:
[London? 1715].. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. A rare British leaflet from the Fishmonger- Smackman Controversy of 1715. That year a bill was in motion before Parliament that would regulate various aspects of the fishing industry, including fish size, net use and mesh size, and the importation of lobster. The latter issue ignited a significant controversy between and among British fish merchants and lobstermen, with the most vocal merchants supporting a clause that would remove a ban on the sale of lobsters caught by foreigners. In the present document, the pro-free-trade-lobster fishmonger lobby responds to a recent leaflet by fellow fish merchants allied with the smackmen. An early example of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC records five copies, at the University of London, Oxford, California State Library, Harvard, and Yale. HANSON 2122.

Tischbein, Johann Friedrich August (1750 Maastricht - Heidelberg 1812) - zugeschrieben
Schüler seines Vaters Johann Valentin Tischbein (1715-1768) in Hildburghausen, ab 1768 seines Onkels Johann Heinrich Tischbein d. Ä. (1722-1789) in Kassel. Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm, philosopher and mathematician (1646-1716).
Hannover, 27. III. 1715.. 1 p. on bifolium with integral address panel.. In Latin, with a Greek interspersion, to the "clarissimo et doctissimo domino Bühel" in Braunschweig, i.e., the theologian and scholar Johann Christian Biel (1687-1745), concerning classical writings and languages: "Vir Doctissime. Fuere qui persica, indica, Aegyptiaca, phrygi[c]a, celtica collegere. Miror scythica neminem quod sciam curasse. Quod superest vale et me ama [...] P.S. Indicabis qua ratione recte literae ad te curentur et an suffciat Tabellarii offcio committi, quod nunc facio". The lexicon of Hesychius was an ancient reference tool for the study of Greek grammar; Biel was working on a publication of "all the scriptural glosses found in Hesychius". A new edition was apparently planned by the scholar Ludolph Küster, to be published at Paris, but Küster died suddenly in 1716, before the work was completed. Curiously, Leibniz mentions his interest in Scythia and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Homer; Translated by Alexander Pope
Bernard Lintot 1715-20, London. First edition of Alexander Pope's monumental illustrated translation of Homer's Iliad, the suscription edition. Quarto, 6 volumes, uniformly bound in contemporary calf, with gilt titles to the spine and corner ornaments, rebacked to style in brown calf, raised bands. The bookplate in each volume of Sir John C. Hobhouse. John Cam Hobhouse (1786-1869), was Lord Byron's close friend, literary confidante and executor. Frontispiece portrait of Homer. In very good condition with some of the usual toning. An attractive set. Encouraged by Swift, Addison and Steele, among others, Pope began translating Homer in 1713. The arduous undertaking would prove to be the most laborious literary enterprise of his life, but one to which he was well-suited. "Idolatry of classical models was an essential part of the religion of men of letters of the day But a Homer in modern English was still wanting. Pope’s rising fame and his familiarity with the literary and social leaders made him the man for the opportunity The ‘Homer’ was long regarded as a masterpiece, and for a century was the source from which clever schoolboys like Byron learnt that Homer was not a mere instrument of torture invented by their masters. No translation of profane literature has ever occupied such a position" (DNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Greenwood, Jonathan)
London, (1715). b/w engravings. 16mo. Unpaginated. This is the first printed British Signal Book. ?"The year 1714 saw the issue of the first signal book. This curiously enough was a private venture of one Jonathan Greenwood... No doubt this duodecimo sized book was much more convenient than the folio sized Instructions. Each signal is represented by a drawing of a ship flying the flag or flags of the signal at the proper place, the purport being added underneath, a method at use in the French navy at least twenty years earlier... Apparently, although the Instructions were regarded as confidential the signals were not, as the work is described as, ?'designed to supply the Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions.?'?"- Perrin, British Flags, p. 163. The book consists of 72 leaves, all engraved, most containing two illustrations of ships or cannon, many with contemporary hand-coloring - 67 engraved illustrations in all. A&W 1890. It is a scarce book in the trade, particularly in good condition, as most copies were used hard. Worldcat shows only two libraries holding copies. The most recent copy in comparable condition to appear at auction sold for 3000 pounds in 2009. It is uncertain whether or not all copies have a frontispiece portrait. This one does not. It is in very good condition, bound in full period blind stamped calf. A wonderful survival.

(Greenwood, Jonathan)
London, (1715). b/w engravings. 16mo. Unpaginated. This is the first printed British Signal Book. “The year 1714 saw the issue of the first signal book. Apparently, although the Instructions were regarded as confidential the signals were not, as the work is described as, ‘designed to supply the Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions.’”- Perrin, British Flags, p. A wonderful survival.

chez Nicholas le Clerc, Paris, 1715. Sabin provides a good account of the publishing history of these highly important compilations of reports sent back by Jesuit missionaries around the world. They include vivid accounts of the inhabitants of America, Asia and the South Seas particularly; and they are replete with lore on folkways, natural history and the incidental discoveries of the far-flung and often imperilled missionaries. Writing of a later edition, Thomas W. Field enthuses,"Every one of these volumes is crowded with interesting details for the history of the aborigines of the countries in which these wonderful men had their missions.". This is the eleventh volume of the 34 volumes that appeared between 1702 and 1776. The title at the spine is of the fifth of the six reports in the volume, and reads "Lettre du P. Marest, "Kaskaskia 1712". Kaskaskia was the name given to a local river by the indigenous people, about a dozen tribes which made up the Illinois Confederation, who lived in the Great Lakes region. In 1703 Kaskaskia became a permanent Jesuit mission and one of the major French settlements in the New World, with Indians, settlers, fur traders, and eventually slaves. There is a loosely inserted bookplate of previous owner Judge Walter B. Douglas of St. Louis who had an interest in the fur trade of Creole French pioneers of the eighteenth century in the Kaskaskia area. This volume includes a journal entry on the Philippines, titled "Relation en Forme de Journal, de la Decouverte des Isles de Palaos, ou nouvelles Philippines" (pp75 -91). Many demands for the at time it came out in D & P catalog. Probably First Edition, Harley did not fall until death of Queen Anne. 1962." Details regarding the books condition as follows. The text has been nicely protected by the boards, while it has some age darkening and the ripple that seems typical of the era, it is heavy and attractive, I see no dog ear or notable chip, supple I might say. Sheets at the extremes do have more darkening and so forth. The first pastedown has 3 lightly penciled notes from the books previous owner, I will not try to erase. Brunet III, 65; ESTC T115766; Graesse III, 222; not in Blogie; Taylor. First edition of a pioneering bibliographical work by Nicolas Francesco Haym, attempting to list all rare books printed in Italy from the beginning of printing to ca. 1715. Unusually for the time, the books are arranged by subject regardless of their format, with four numbered general categories, each with many subdivisions: (1) "Istoria" (History); (2) "De'Poeti" (Poets and poetry); (3) "Prose" (Prose); (4) "Arti e scienze" (Arts and science).Three quires of contemporary paper have been bound at the end. They have been used for a manuscript supplement bound at the end, adding 16 books published in Italy, all from the 16th century, with notes in French and Italian. With marginal worm holes near the foot of the gutter in several quires, but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Binding damaged along the fore-edge and repaired.
