"Map taken from the ""Mercurio Geografico"", a collection of maps printed in Rome between 1660 and 1730 by De Rossi. Along the years the Atlas has been enriched with many plates; those added at the end of the XVIII century, like the present one, are much more rare to find than the maps of the first editions. Copperplate, in excellent condition."

LE HAY A PARIS Imprimerie de Jacques Collombat 1715 Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes nations du Levant (A Collection of One Hundred Engravings Representing the Various Nations of the Levant). Jean-Baptiste Vanmour went to Paris in 1699 and was noticed by Marquis Charles de Ferriol, who was appointed the king's special ambassador to Istanbul; the same year, he accompanied the Marquis to Istanbul. Ferriol commissioned the artist, who said he wanted to "learn everything about the customs and traditions of the Turks," to make drawings depicting Ottoman officials and the characters of various nations. Vanmour worked on this comprehensive project between 1707 and 1708. After the ambassador returned to Paris in 1711, he ordered engravings based on these drawings. Prepared by a team including G.J.B. Scottin, P. Simoneau fils, and J. Haussard, the one hundred engravings were published as an album by an engineer called Jacques le Hay. Known as the Ferriol Collection (Recueil Ferriol), this album underwent three printings between 1712 and 1715. Even though there are certain slight differences between the printings, all of them depicted Ottoman characters in their various costumes in a hierarchical order, starting with the Sultan; in addition, the scores of Sama music, a descript … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE BOURSIER DU COUDRAY, Angélique Marguerite.
X, 184, [6] pp.Revised second edition of an important work in the history of obstetrics, by the pioneering midwife Angélique Marguerite Le Boursier du Coudray (1715-1794), probably the most famous midwife of the 18th century. The first edition was published in 1759, without the 26 colour-printed engraved plates of the present edition. The plates depict the pelvis with the uterus or the baby, showing different positions of babies in the womb and how the midwife should act. In 1759, in an effort to end infant mortality, Louis XV commissioned Madame du Coudray to travel throughout France to teach the art of childbirth to illiterate peasant women. During the thirty years that followed she instructed women in nearly forty cities. "Madame du Coudray taught her delivery method either directly or through her trained disciples to roughly ten thousand women and girls. ... Day-long lessons and demonstrations lasted at least two months and culminated in the ceremonious granting of royal certificates" (Goldsmith). With a faint owner's inscription on the title-page. Foot margin of the engraved portrait trimmed, fore-edge margin of the title-page slightly soiled and a few small spots. Overall in very good condition.l Goldsmith, Going public: women and publishing in early modern France, pp. 79-96; for the author see: Gelbart, The King's midwife: a history and mystery of Madame du Coudray.

AMSTERDAM: Near Fine. 1715 King James Bible With Geneva Notes Impressive Folio Measuring 10.5" x 17" in Handsome Contemporary Calf with Brass Clasps (intact and working) With 6 Amazing Folding Maps (all present and complete and in fine condition) (I originally purchased this bible because of the amazing maps and the Geneva notes alongside the KJV text...you won't be disappointed in the maps, they are very cool!) BIBLE. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments... WITH: The Book of Common Prayer... [Amsterdam: 1715]. Folio (measuring 10-1/2 by 17 inches), contemporary full diced paneled brown calf over beveled wooden boards rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, new endpapers, brass claps and catches (all working). Handsomely bound 1715 Amsterdam edition of the King James Bible, including the marginal notes of the Geneva Bible, with six folding maps - including one of the New World that depicts California as an island - distinguished in full contemporary calf and brass clasps and catches. First published in 1611 and indisputably the most influential of English Bible translations, the King James Version has exercised incalculable influence on piety, language and literature. This edition identifies no publisher or place but likely hails from Amsterdam. In 1642, Joost Broerss of Amsterdam was the first publisher to produce a Bible combining the King James text with the Geneva Bible's notes - an interesting blend, since the ostensibly seditious sentiments found in the notes played a major part in James I's decision to commission a new Bible. GRILL, Jan.
[8], 447, [1 blank] pp.Practical guide to the calculation of the value of gold and silver of any purity, intended for merchants, mint masters and others who deal with precious metals. The author notes that there is "now" a great deal of low grade gold and silver on the market (below 20 carat and 10 penningen respectively, i.e. below 83 1/3 %), and that previously published guides did not cover these in a convenient manner. He therefore first explains how these metals are weighed in the Netherlands, presenting the units of weight and their relations, and gives instructions for using the tables, with examples. Once one has weighed the gold or silver and assayed it to give the purity in carats/mark or penningen/mark respectively, the tables on pp. 1-223 and 225-395 tell the weight of fine metal in a given weight of impure metal. Once one knows the weight of fine gold or silver, one can look up its value in guilders in the tables on pp. 224 and 396-447. Grill was himself an assayer. In 1715 he published his tables for gold alone, also sold by Van Eyl, and the present tables for gold and silver probably followed soon after. The heaviest weight listed for both gold and silver is 100 marks (so that the tables could be used without multiplication for weights up to 200 marks), but for silver in four degrees of purity, a contemporary owner has inserted manuscript tables for weights up to4000 marks. In very good condition. A rare and valuable window into trade in precious metals in the early 18th-century Netherlands.l STCN (5 copies); not in Hoover; Kress.
