VALLISNIERI Antonio
colle Annotazioni per chiarezza maggiore della medesima. Venezia, Gio. Gabr. Hertz, 1715. in-4, pp. (8), 87, leg. orig. cartoncino rustico, tit. ms. al dorso. Dedica a stampa dell'a. a Luigi Ferdinando Marsilli. [Click Below for Full Description]

[BURNET, Sir Thomas, 1694-1753];
London Printed for J. Roberts near the Oxford Arms in Warwick-Lane, 1715 8vo: [2],219,[5]pp, with frontispiece and imprimatur leaf. Variant with price 3s/6d on title page. Period calf ruled in blind, rebacked to style, red morocco lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. From the library of bibliophile Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (1906-1973), with his discreet ownership stamp on two pages. (In an appreciation of Shelbourne's diaries, Hilary Mantle noted in The Guardian: "His passion is for antiquarian books, and he owns them by the yard; we are not talking about first editions of Dickens, but first editions of Erasmus, 'printed Basle, 1517'. His regular beat takes him to his private consulting rooms at St John Street in the centre of Manchester, then to Shaw's, the book dealer . . .".) A handsome copy, clean and sound, with several abrasions to boards, marginal toning to some leaves, occasional spots and soiling, inoffensive ink blot to p. 195 obscuring four or five letters but not affecting sense. ESTC Citation N22063. McBurney 79. Lowndes 325 (calling it a satire on Sir Robert Walpole, ascribed to Thomas Duffet).

[War of the Spanish Succession]
[London, 1715. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. A rare political leaflet petitioning Parliament for relief of warrant officers who had fought in the recent War of the Spanish Succession. In March 1715 the House of Commons ordered that a list of all the regimental and warrant officers be drawn up, but by the time this document was printed, numerous warrant officers had not been entered into the list and rumors had begun to circulate that they would therefore not be receiving expected compensation for their service. "Besides, the Nature of several of the Warrant Officers Posts was such, as they could not be put on a Regimental List, viz. Directors of Hospitals, Commissaries, Officers who have lost their Limbs, and many other Officers, whose particular Hardships, Pretensions, and Disappointments are more at large set forth and specify'd in their several Warrants. So that their Condition is very deplorable." This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC lists only two copies, at Oxford and the University of Missouri. HANSON 2212.

Hammond, Thomas]
[London, 1715. Broadsheet, 16 1/4 x 10 inches. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of left margin excised, with no loss to text. Mild foxing. Very good. A petition to Parliament on behalf of Thomas Hammond, "a considerable Trader for Twenty Years last past in Wines, and other Merchandises," asking for public assistance in paying the remainder of his debts to the government. During the War of the Spanish Succession, Hammond suffered major losses to his trade and merchandise, resulting from the sinking of the ships, Thomas and Elizabeth, near Virginia; the capture of other ships sailing to India, the failures of various merchants, vintners, and coopers to pay him; and other "Losses at Home and Abroad." Unable to pay his own debts, Hammond absconded, but he was caught, imprisoned, and stripped of all his assets. The present document relates this history, tabulating his losses and the amounts he had already paid to his creditors through assets and sureties, and petitions the House of Commons to pass a bill allowing the Treasury to forgive his debts due for customs. Part of the earliest British literature relating to decriminalized bankruptcy, following the historic bankruptcy statute of Queen Anne of 1705, which granted the first modern provisions for the release of insolvent debtors from their debts. This is also among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary panelled calf, spine with recent subtle repairs to joints and ends, red label, a very good copy. "...one of the most original physicians of the great scientific period in which he lived. His works show independence of thought and the spirit of research; while some have been important as being the starting-points of new methods in medical practice... Floyer did good service also by his advocacy of cold bathing... He showed that the Roman customs of bathing had been prevalent in Britain in former times, and attributed to their disuse the occurrence of many diseases" (DNB). [Quakers]
[London, 1715. Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Moderate toning and foxing. Very good. In 1696, after experiencing decades of exclusion and imprisonment for conscientiously refusing to take loyalty and court oaths, Parliament granted Quakers the right to take a "solemn affirmation" in legal situations in place of an actual oath. Over the next two decades numerous Quakers objected to the invocation of God's name in the official affirmation and refused it as they had the oath. In 1715 a bill was under consideration in Parliament to renew indefinitely the Quakers' right to the affirmation. The Quaker authors of the present petition support the bill, but ask that it be amended with a revised affirmation that does not include the name of God. ESTC lists copies at four institutions: British Library, Library of the Religious Society of Friends, National Library of Scotland, and Oxford. Benson, William]
[London, 1715. Broadsheet, 13 1/2 x 10 inches. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Small stain, affecting one character of text, toning at upper edge. Else very good. An unrecorded document lobbying Parliament in support of the election of William Benson as MP for Shaftesbury, disclosing the ownership history and financial information on his family estates in Middlesex. William Benson (1682-1754) was a prominent early Whig political writer, politician, amateur architect, and patron of the arts. This broadsheet refers to the election by which Benson would first enter Parliament, by petition, in 1716. In 1718, Benson vacated the seat to replace Christopher Wren as Surveyor General of the Royal Works. He was relieved of that position the following year, after a humiliating incident in which he condemned the chamber of the House of Lords, incorrectly declaring that it was in imminent danger of collapse. An early example of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. No copies recorded by ESTC or OCLC. DNB II, p.261.

R A R E *** *** A famous book on the subject, this is also similar to the one illustrated in Ilza Veith's THE YELLOW EMPEROR'S CLASS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. Strangely enough, this early work was missed by the great Japanese medical book biblio- grapher: Gordon Mestler in his "GALAXY," but there are several other references to Okamoto & similar books on the JUSHIKEI [14 CHANNELS]. NOTES ON EARLY MEDICINE IN JAPAN. Okamoto used alternate names: Ichiku, Ippo [shi] & Ittokusai in his career as a physician. He was the younger brother of the most famous & celebrated SHAKESPEARE OF JAPAN, Monzaemon Chikamatsu the great playwright. He was the disciple of Sam- paku Ajioka, a physician. After he was excommunicated by his master, he endeavored to popularize medical works among the masses, and was prolific writer of medical books. This work has 7 superb illustrations of the renal system, acupuncture points. Written in Kambun [Chinese], with Furigana grammar & sounds added so Japanese can read & understand this text. Quite early monographic study of the therapeutic & practical application of acupuncture, utilizing detail diagrams show- ing the renal system its treatment & the "29 Difficult Acupuncture Points" the "14 Major Channels [JUSHIKEI]." Wise, John
Boston: Reprinted: Sold by Nicholas Boone, at the Sign of the BIBLE in Cornhill, 1715. Testimonial leaf, title-leaf, 116pp. 12mo. Modern calf in period style, over original birch boards, with original wastesheet pastedowns. Minor binding wear, margins trimmed a bit close in places, shaving a few letters and catchwords, small paper repair to upper forecorner of leaf C4, only evident on recto, a bit tanned. Overall very good. With contemporary ownership signature of Samuel Whitwell, an 1802 notation from an Andrew Grimes who bought the book at auction, and a 20th-century bookplate from the Zion Research Library. Second edition, after the virtually unobtainable first New York edition of 1713. The present pamphlet was issued in response to an attempt by the Mathers and others to initiate a movement to establish associations of clergy to exercise functions usually left up to individual churches. Wise has since been called the "first great American democrat," due to his argument that the ultimate power of the churches should rest with the congregation and not with their ministers or an association of ministers. "The People...are the first Subject of Power...a Democracy in Church or State is a very honourable Government." Wise's influential A VINDICATION OF THE GOVERNMENT OF NEW-ENGLAND CHURCHES (Boston, 1717) is the famous statement of his belief in Congregational polity. EVANS 1795 SABIN 104897. HOWES W594, "aa." FER, Nicolas de
Paris, 1715. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 15.5 x 19". This elaborate and striking engraving communicates the geography, culture, and history of the city of Jerusalem. In doing so, it touches on almost all of its medium's 18th century uses, including map, architectural rendering, town plan, and pictorial representation. Its primary component is a floor plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre labeled down to the finest detail, encompassing chapels, thrones, columns, decorative mosaics, and sites of relics, among more. An elevation of Holy Tomb fills the space of the rotunda. Three insets surround the plan, their shapes complementing the geometry of the church. They feature a plan of the Temple of Solomon, a plan of the city of Jerusalem, and a Map of the Holy Land. These four renderings, taken together, are furthermore framed by a border of remarkable design. At the top, scenes portray from left to right the crucifixion and the resurrection. On the remaining three sides, the stations of the cross appear along a stone path, with each group of weary cross-bearers described with a unique emotional inflection. De Fer's strategy of filling negative space with a texture of engraved lines not only helps these fine details stand out, it also contributes to the gravity with which they are conveyed. Made while de Fer was the official geographer to Louis, Dauphine of France, it is possible that this work helped him gain the position of official geographer to the Pope in 1720. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific cartographer, engraver and publisher who took over the fa … [Click Below for Full Description]
