GRILL, Jan.
STCN (5 copies); not in Hoover; Kress. Practical guide to the calculation of the value of gold and silver of any purity, intended for merchants, mint masters and others who deal with precious metals. The author notes that there is "now" a great deal of low grade gold and silver on the market (below 20 carat and 10 penningen respectively, i.e. below 83 1/3 %), and that previously published guides did not cover these in a convenient manner. He therefore first explains how these metals are weighed in the Netherlands, presenting the units of weight and their relations, and gives instructions for using the tables, with examples. Once one has weighed the gold or silver and assayed it to give the purity in carats/mark or penningen/mark respectively, the tables on pp. 1-223 and 225-395 tell the weight of fine metal in a given weight of impure metal. Once one knows the weight of fine gold or silver, one can look up its value in guilders in the tables on pp. 224 and 396-447. Grill was himself an assayer. In 1715 he published his tables for gold alone, also sold by Van Eyl, and the present tables for gold and silver probably followed soon after. The heaviest weight listed for both gold and silver is 100 marks (so that the tables could be used without multiplication for weights up to 200 marks), but for silver in four degrees of purity, a contemporary owner has inserted manuscript tables for weights up to4000 marks.In very good condition. A rare and valuable window into trade in precious metals in the early 18th-century Netherlands.

WALPOLE
under a manuscript transfer note, saying "I Doe hereby assigne & transfer all my Right, title & Interest in the within order & the Tally thereto belonging with Interest due and to grow due thereupon unto the Governor and Company of the Bank of England .", with a note below, "Reg[iste]red J Hay", the printed text on the recto is the beginning of an Order in virtue of the main annual tax Act, first passed in 1711, for duty on many goods and renewed annually, this time "Malt, Mum, Cyder and Perry, for the Service of the Year One thousand Seven hundred and fifteen and for making forth Duplicates of Exchequer Bills and Lottery Tickers, lost, burnt or destroy'd .", 1 side oblong 8vo., Pay Office, Horse Guards, 30th September The cost of Queen Anne's wars greatly exceeded the revenue, and government payments were commonly in arrears. An Act was passed to allow its IOUs to be exchanged for South Sea Company stock, which had a cash value because it could be traded. (The bookseller Thomas Guy made his fortune in this way, beginning with a seaman newly ashore, who asked him to discount his wages note, which Guy so exchanged). In the tax act, a clause was inserted which allowed public paymasters and treasurers to raise cash loans from willing individuals against the stock as security, at interest up to 6%, provided the cash was used for the same public purpose. In 1714, a further clause authorized the Bank of England to be such a lender. The present document is one of Robert Walpole's last actions as Paymaster of the Forces (from 3rd October 1714), before he became Prime Minister in Oc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ex-libris ms: "Simonis Duclaux, medicinae studentis Monspelii nov. 1730."

Originale.Pleine Edition Sheepskin contemporary. Spine ribbed decorated with semi stars in the boxes. Part of title in red morocco. Caps frayed, split bits in head and tail. Coins émoussés.C'est the last work of the philosopher Cartesian Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715), which was written in response to free Laurent Boursier, From God's action on the creatures. Fellow says theses Malebranche (in search of the truth) lead to the Thomist theory of the determination of our actions. Malebranche said that our actions are free, God can not be determined. Malebranche defines the very first page of physical premotion: 'A physical standby, before the determination of the will, and makes it freely determined, and with indifference.' This is a work of importance on Free Will and physical determination of the Will. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. [BURNET, Sir Thomas, 1694-1753];
First Edition London Printed for J. Roberts near the Oxford Arms in Warwick-Lane, 1715 8vo: [2],219,[5]pp, with frontispiece and imprimatur leaf. Variant with price 3s/6d on title page. Period calf ruled in blind, rebacked to style, red morocco lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. From the library of bibliophile Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (1906-1973), with his discreet ownership stamp on two pages. (In an appreciation of Shelbourne's diaries, Hilary Mantle noted in The Guardian: "His passion is for antiquarian books, and he owns them by the yard; we are not talking about first editions of Dickens, but first editions of Erasmus, 'printed Basle, 1517'. His regular beat takes him to his private consulting rooms at St John Street in the centre of Manchester, then to Shaw's, the book dealer . . .".) A handsome copy, clean and sound, with several abrasions to boards, marginal toning to some leaves, occasional spots and soiling, inoffensive ink blot to p. 195 obscuring four or five letters but not affecting sense. ESTC Citation N22063. McBurney 79. Lowndes 325 (calling it a satire on Sir Robert Walpole, ascribed to Thomas Duffet). ¶ Wicked satire on statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford (political power-broker and patron of Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, and Daniel Defoe), taking its title from Swift's celebrated Tale of a Tub (but not recorded by Teerink-Scouten in the list of spurious sequels to Swift's work). Probably written with the collaboration of George Duckett, it casts an account of Harley's life as an allegory of a Machiavellian scoundrel who betrays family and frie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary ownership signature at head of titlepage: John Gopsel. Early 20th century half morocco, raised bands, linen cloth boards. Inscribed on leading free e.p.: 'Presented by Dr. W.J. Turrell'.ESTC T53262. This second edition has a new 2pp 'Advertisement' mentioning the challenge made by Radcliffe's servant to the 'genuineness' of some of the letters printed, adding several new letters and thanking two friends who 'have taken upon them the trouble of revising and correcting the work'. A relatively common book with four copies recorded in Oxford, but this copy clearly escaped the city at some point and the Health Care Libraries at the Bodleian can find 'no trace' of this copy having been in their ownership. DAMPIER, William.
Rouen: Robert Machuel le jeune & Eustache Herault, 1715. Five volumes, duodecimo, with a total of 34 engraved maps, coastal profiles and harbour plans (12 folding) and 32 plates (13 folding) including engraved title pages and frontispiece for volume I-III; contemporary French mottled calf, banded spines richly gilt, crimson morocco labels, from the Villeneuve library with engraved bookplates to all volumes. Rare: an attractive set of the first collected edition of Dampier in any language to include the related accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood. Most of the maps, coastal profiles, and natural history plates are accurate copies of the English originals, but this edition is notable for the addition of a small series of newly engraved views (perhaps based on the Dutch edition Nieuwe reystogt rondom de werreld, published between 1698 and 1704).Dampier's 'style is clear and simple, making his writings almost classical. A precursor of the Enlightenment, he was not interested in marvels, but in examination and description of natural phenomena. Through his writings, Dampier made known the profitable possibilities in the Pacific' (Hill, describing the collected English edition). It is interesting that it was not until 1729, some fourteen years after the present edition, that the London publishers Knapton prepared their famous four-volume edition of the collected Dampier, which also included the accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood.Borba de Moraes noted that part of the edition was printed by Robert Machuel and part by Eustache Herault. PILARINO [PYLARINO], Giacomo
Venice, Giovanni Gabriele Hertz, 1715 - 8vo (142 x 92 mm), pp 33 [3, blank], with woodcut device on title; a fine, unpressed copy, outer edges uncut, in marbled wrappers, in a morocco-backed box.First edition of the exceptionally rare foundation work in immunology, the first book in Europe not only to describe the inoculation process but to base it on empirical evidence. 'Pilarino in 1701 inoculated three children at Constantinople with smallpox virus. He is accredited with the "medical" discovery of variolation, and thus is the first immunologist. His book records his many researches on the subject' (Garrison-Morton). The full title of this work translated as 'New and safe method to stimulate smallpox by inoculation, recently invented and put into practice and performed routinely, by which bodies acquire immunity against this infection in later years'.'In the eighteenth century another even more important event took place for the future immunology. The variolation, that is, the first immunizing method, was introduced in Europe. . 'Western European medicine first considered variolation as a vulgar and useless way of preventing smallpox. But the Venetian physician Jacobo Pylarino (1659-1718), who travelled in different parts of Asia and Africa, learned the technique. In 1701 he settled in Constantinople and there, for the first time in Europe, inoculated with smallpox virus the three children of a friend. Afterwards, he devoted himself for studying the method and published in 1715 in the Latin language a book entitled Nova, et tuta variolas excitandi per transplantationem me … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean Boudot, Paris, 1715. Note sur la page de garde : « Ce … [Click Below for Full Description]

[London, 1715. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. A rare leaflet lobbying Parliament on behalf of English barley farmers and maltsters.
