GRONOVIUS, Jan Frederik
1715. Paperback. GRONOVIUS, Jan Frederik. DISPUTATIO MEDICO-BOTANICA INAUGURALIS CAMPHORAE HISTORIAM EXHIBENS. [Medical-Botanical Dissertation on the History of Camphor, submitted to Dr. Wolferd Senguer and the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden for the Doctoral Degree]. Leiden, S. Luchtmans, 1715. Quarto. [2]ff.,38[2]pp. Jan Frederik Gronovius (1686-1762), author of Flora Virginica (1739-43), worked closely with Linnaeus. He was the son and grandson of of important Classical scholars Jacob and Jan Frederik Gronovius, both from Leiden. John Clayton of Virginia sent many plant specimens to Leiden, where they were examined and published by Gronovius (without Clayton's knowledge) and formed the basis of some of Linnaeus' classification of New World plants. After purchase by Sir Joseph Banks they became part of the collection of the Natural History Museum in London. With an elaborate engraved title by F. Bleyswyk, showing two goddesses and various paraphernalia. The title is printed letterpress within the engraved frame, which says "meritis intrare licebit" (only the deserving may enter). It seems likely that the engraved frame was used by Luchtmans for other dissertations. An unbound pamphlet, which appears to have been excised from a bound collection, starting with two blank leaves likely not contemporary, the first with a library stamp and notation. Title shows pencil mmarkings, chips and soil, and a half-inch loss to bottom margin. Except for some soil to the margin of the dedication and page 1, the text is very clean, and the margins are very wide. A rare and inte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pufendorf, Samuel, Freiherr von
1715. Pufendorf, Samuel, Freiherr von [1632-1694]. De Officio Hominis et Civis Juxta Legem Naturalem Libri Duo. Cambridge: Typis Academicis. Impensis Jacobi Knapton ad Insigne Coronae in Coemeterio D. Pauli Londini, 1715. [xxiv], 164, [4] pp. Includes four-page publisher catalogue. 12mo. (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands and lettering piece, and gilt-stamped author name and date to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning to text, slightly heavier in places, minor stains to a few leaves. An attractive copy. $400. * Later edition. De Officio is a synopsis of Pufendorf's De Jure Naturae et Gentium, a landmark work that proposed a thorough system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. Beginning with a consideration of fundamental legal ideas and their various divisions, Pufendorf proceeds to a discussion of the validity of customs, the doctrines of necessity and innate human reason. It is significant in part because it develops principles introduced by Grotius and Hobbes. Unlike Hobbes, Pufendorf argued that peace, not war, was the state of nature, and he proposed that international law was not restricted to Christendom. Buddeus was a renowned German jurist, theologian, historian and professor at the University of Jena. The first English edition was published in 1682. English Short-Title Catalogue T141121.

1741); entspr. hs. Bibliothekssignatur am Innendeckel und hs. Signaturschildchen am Rücken.

Van Der Aa, Pierre
Leiden: Van der Aa, Pierre. unbound. Map. c.1715. Copper plate engraving. Image measures 8 3/4 x 11 1/2.This decorative circa 1715 map of the Guiana coast includes the Lesser Antilles. Beautifully detailed, the map notes towns, rivers and mountains in the region and depicts the colony established by Charles Leigh in the early 17th century. The map identifies the legendary Lake Parima and the fabled Kingdom of El Dorado or city of Manoa along its western banks. Following Sir Walter Raleigh's publication of "The Discoverie of the Large, Rich, and Bewtiful Empyre of Guiana" in 1595, European interest in the regain grew considerably in the 17th century and various explorers set out in search of gold in Guiana. Among these was Charles Leigh, who set sail in 1604 aboard the "Olive Plat". The locals, oppressed by the Carib people, helped build a colony for the Englishmen in hopes that they would settle there. Leigh went on to explore the region for gold, only to find none. Upon his return to the colony, he found almost every man sick and soon after fell ill himself and died aboard his ship, attempting to return home. A beautifully illustrated title cartouche features scenes of what looks like men lowering a coffin in a large hole with a ship in the background. The map is in good condition, surrounded by decorative border. Map has been trimmed around the border, possibly for framing purposes. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, editor and bookseller based in Leiden, Netherlands. He started his own publishing and auction house at the age of 21 and went on to pro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Martial
typis Gul. Bowyer, impensis Gul. Innys, Londini [London] 1715 - 12mo, pp. [xlviii], 311, [5], 20. First leaf blank apart from engraved coat of arms of Eton College on verso. Later sprinkled calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, spine richly gilt in compartments (this gilding possibly later), black morocco label. A little spotting, a few leaves with a tiny chip from top margin. Extremities a touch worn, front joint cracked but strong, small chip from head of spine. Bookplate of the Earls of Lovelace and shelfmark stamp of their library at Ben Damph Forest to front endpapers. A scarce edition of classical and neo-classical Latin epigrams, mostly selections from Martial but also including poems by Catullus, Ausonius, Virgil, and Seneca (plus a few translations from the Greek Anthology) and a handful from 'modern' authors such as Beza, Buchanan, and Grotius. UK printings under this title go back to the 1680s, with examples designated 'for the use of Eton scholars' from 1686. This, calling itself the 8th edition, is like the others a scarce thing, despite having been printed in an edition of 2,000 copies: ESTC records copies in just 11 locations, though Eton has three and Cambridge two - and just one in the USA, at Harvard. ESTC T183110. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
