Lampe, Friderico Adolpho (Friedrich Adolph Lampe)
Bremae: Hermanni Braueri, 1715. First edition. Hardcover. poor to vg. Quarto (9 x 7"). 626, [26]pp (Index and Addenda). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper covered boards. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. Book housed in a modern orange cloth covered clamshell box, with gold lettering to spine. First edition of Friedrich Adolph Lampe's commentary and exercitations on Psalm 45, a wedding song, or epithalamium, written to a king on the day of his wedding to a foreign woman. The Psalm consists of two sections framed by an introduction (vss. 1-2) and final blessing (vss. 17-18). Verses 3-10 enumerate the virtues of the king, while verses 11-16 describe the queen's wedding procession and urge her to forget her family and her own country and to submit to her husband. In verse 3, the poet tells the king that "God has blessed you from eternity," a concept taken by some to imply predestination. The most controversial passage is verse 7 (6 in the RSV), traditionally translated "thy throne, O god, is for ever and ever," because it seems as if the poet is addressing the king as "god," which is theologically problematic. Alternate translations include "your divine throne endures for ever and ever" and "the eternal and everlasting God has enthroned you." The last two verses of the psalm assure the king that he will have a long line of descendents and "peoples will praise you from age to age." It is a Psalm by the "sons of Korah" and represents a song for the wedding of the king. The sons of Korach, to which the psalm is attributed in the 1st ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petronio, Riccardo.
Venice & Bassano, Giovanni Antonio Remondini, [ca. 1715]. - 8vo. 8 pp. With woodcut device on title page. Wrappers. An appeal, written in verse, to all religious orders and Christian laymen to take arms against the Ottomans. Apparently an early product of the Turkish-Venetian War of 1714-18, in which the new Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha re-conquered Morea (the Peloponnesus) from the Venetians, who had held the peninsula since 1699. A different version (kept at the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana in Vicenza), published by Giovanni Berno "in Venetia, Bassano, & in Verona", is dated 1715; this date of publication is also supported by the mention of Pope Clement XI (1700-21). However, the Marciana in Venice keeps an earlier publication of the same work produced for the Venetian Alessandro Cortesi, bearing the date 1663. Yet another, undated version in the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova bears the imprint "In Venezia, per Domenico Lovisa à Rialto". No other copy with Remondini's imprint is known. - Some browning and waterstaining; old pagination in manuscript and stamped (apparently removed from an old collection). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

FONTENELLE, Monsieur; GARDINER, William (ed )
London: A. Bettesworth & E. Curll, 1715. Leatherbound. Very good. [12], 192 p. 16 cm. Engraved frontispiece. Full leather. Respined, corners worn. Ink inscription on front free endpaper. Two tears in last page. Dampstains to first pages. Ink notation on p. 19. First published in 1686, this book was one of the first popular science books ever published. Its scientific ideas are aimed directly at the average reader rather than the natural philosophers of the time. Fontenelle's book became an instant best seller, translated into no fewer than 10 languages. While it might be expected that the author's speculation about life on other planets would have been censored by the church, the lighthearted tone of the Preface explains how he got away with it: "But perhaps there is no need of answering the Objection, for it concerns no Body but the Men in the Moon; and I never yet said there are Men there; if any ask what the Inhabitants there are, if they be not Men? All I can say is, that I never saw 'em; and 'tis not because I have seen 'em, that I speak of 'em."

RELAND (Adrian)
- delineatae ab Hadriano Relando. Prefationem praemisit Ioan. Franciscus Buddeus. Leipzig, J.F. [Click Below for Full Description]

VALLISNIERI Antonio
Hertz Gio. Gabr, 1715. in-4, pp. (8), 87, leg. orig. cartoncino rustico, tit. ms. al dorso. Dedica a stampa dell'a. a Luigi Ferdinando Marsilli. TAYLOR, Brook.
London: R. Knaplock, 1715; 1719. First edition of Taylor's important work on perspective, here bound with its second edition which contains significant new material. “Despite the impulses he received from other mathematicians, Taylor's contribution to the theory of perspective remains highly original. He plucked from the works of others the ideas that were mathematically the most fruitful, and taking these as a starting point, he built up a theory that was far more general, comprehensive and systematic than anything seen before” (Andersen, p. 498). “Like all Taylor's writing, his book on linear perspective was so concise that Bernoulli characterized it as “abstruse to all and unintelligible to artists for whom it was more especially written.” Even the second edition, which nearly doubled the forty-two pages of the first, showed little improvement in this matter. Its effect, nevertheless, was very substantial, since it passed through four editions, three translations, and twelve authors who prepared twenty-two editions of extended expositions based on Taylor's concepts. He developed his theory of perspective in a formal and rigorous fashion in a sequence of theorems and proofs. The most outstanding and original of his ideas in this field were his definition and use of vanishing points and vanishing lines for all lines and planes, and of his development of a theory and practice for the inverse problem of perspective that later served as a basis for work by Lambert and for the development of photogrammetry. Taylor also made free use of the idea of associating infinitely dist … [Click Below for Full Description]
